Qantas Business Class meals & menus

12th February, MEL-SYD on A330-200:
Plane was delayed by more than half an hour but we very much enjoyed the Chicken Laksa in the Melbourne Business lounge- yum!

Boarding was a treat thanks to the forward doors being open for J class passengers only. Always weird to be on a bigger plane for such a short hop as the service always feels "not good enough" but that's only because it's an one hour Domestic flight. Crew on this particular flight wasn't extremely friendly either so that didn't help.

Food came out very speedy after departure and from what I could tell, every passenger got fed within the short timeframe we had. Choice was a "Ginger chicken with noodles" or a absolutely disgusting sounding/looking pumpkin salad. I hate pumpkin in general and this salad looked like just a few slices of cold pumpkin with a bit of feta cheese on top- my own person hell, I must say. Unfortunately, the chicken was truly awful as well- we had dinner at Spice Temple the night before which was delicious and then the Laksa in the Melbourne lounge was also okay but this somehow "Asian" style chicken was just such a slide to the bottom, it was hardly edible.

IMG_1674.jpg

The sauce tasted and looked suspiciously similar to the equally horrid "Pork Goulash" which had been the alternative glob in the Melbourne lounge and tasted nothing like goulash- pork goulash in itself is highly suspicious to me (rather than beef or veal) but even the sauce had nothing on goulash whatsoever and the meat quality was really bad too. This supposedly "Asian" chicken dish here on the flight itself was really similar- some slimy glibbery sauce of a nondescript orang-y reddish colour. A little bit like the awful sugar-loaded stuff you can buy by the glass in supermarkets which claims to be "sweet and sour sauce". To top it off, the chicken meat was the cheapest off cuts of chicken thighs one could find and the only saving grace the fact that it came with noodles rather than boring rice so at least it filled you up. Needless to say, all the veggies you see were so cooked down that they had lost any bite they could have. It actually tasted even worse than it looks and it looks pretty meh already. It was not a good meal.

Wine was the excellent Dandelion Shiraz that I had on my way down already and thankfully, plastic cups were provided for landing so you could get in two or three glasses at least.

Apologies, no photo but we were offered a mushroom and bacon quiche or a fruit bowl for a 11 05am departure that ended being slightly later departure. The quiche was good.

Fab service from the crew who were extremely attentive for the short flight. My 2yro got a massive meal… chicken, carrot, peas and mashed potato, plus banana, sultanas, fruit cup and a chocolate… made me want to get his meal!

On the ultra long haul flights (PER-LHR, MEL-DFW, SYD-DFW), is there any possibility for the crew to hold a meal back and get it served later in the flight? I know Qantas don't have dine on demand, but is it truly a case of no food for you if you sleep through the main meal service at the start of the flight?

I've never bothered to ask because I didn't think it's possible, but I have an upcoming flight where it would be a big help if I could sleep first then eat later.

It's certainly not a case of no food. There is always the mid-flight snack options. Below was from QF 9 late last year. I've also noticed a spiel on the left side of the menu recently (sorry, no pics of it) where they state something along the lines of tailoring dining to your needs. I specifically asked if this meant dine on demand and was told no though. I can't see why they couldn't hold back your meal request though. Report back!

Actually some of the menus do state a kind of dine on demand

I have never tried this in J.
Definitely possible in F

That's the wording I was referring to. I suspect it's their way of spinning you can order the mid-flight snacks mid-flight rather than genuinely dine on demand.

I did SYD - PER last week and while I did not personally partake in the slop that was served up, I heard someone further back decline the meal and the crew saying “no worries let me know if you get hungry later”. About an hour before landing they were served one of the hot options.

Great crew and while the 737 seat is a shame for longer sectors, I find the service consistently more attentive.

Crew said the lamb loin was substituted with beef fillet with the same sides of Brussels, carrots and something else, I think it was the lamb still!

Breakfast which was poached egg with a load of pickled veggies and haloumi, good taste but a little cold.

The CC were fantastic, all very on point, the clearing away of plates and glasses was especially impressive.

QF10 PER-MEL last night (13th).

Choice of PDB offered

White bean salad for mains, as I'd already done the Moroccan Chicken and the Bruschetta in the PER ITL:

I went for cheese/walnuts/grapes/biscuits and muscat for dessert a little later. No photo, sorry.

No Maggie Beer ice cream offered - just a pine/lime Splice... pass. Lind balls, too. Pass.

I have to report the cabin crew absoloutely made this trip the best. Friendly but not OTT interaction, a welcome chat from the CSM. Offers to top up every beverage other than the PDB.
I can't put my finger on it, other than to say they made me feel appreciated, and that they were not just going through the motions.

Shame it was only 3hrs with them, tbh.

My apologies if this has been asked before, especially recently. I've tried searching, but the search engine tells me that QF9 is too short or too common.

I have flights in April on QF937 (BNE-PER) departing at 1300, and then connecting to QF9. On the way back in June, I'm flying on QF2 and QF52. All flights are in J.

I'm wondering what's likely to be on the menu, or even how soon before the flights the menu would be known. What would likely be on offer in the Brisbane domestic lounge or the Perth transit lounge
The Perth transit lounge is usually pretty good. As mentioned earlier, their specialty offering is some form of hotdog that changes fairly regularly. There's normally a veggie option as well (it was grilled mushrooms on my most recent visit, which was quite tasty).

They also have a self-serve section with a decent (but not awe-inspiring) range of both hot and cold options. Bruschetta is almost always offered, along with a variety of fruits and snacks. The hot options will depend on the time of day, but are usually pretty good. Including some not-yet-toasted sandwiches sitting right next to a sandwich press. I've had the pumpkin soup a couple of times, as well as a vegetarian fried noodle that crops up occasionally. Again, most of the options are fairly decent.

Due to the limited number of flights leaving T3 (QF71/QF10 in the morning, QF9 in the evening) there's always a lot of space as well.

Pro-tip: If your QF9 departure is delayed don't immediately go to the international section of the airport on your arrival. Head to the domestic J lounge (near gate 15 - frosted doors). If the transit lounge is open they'll direct you to go there instead, but if it's not you'll be able to sit in the domestic J lounge instead of being stuck in the terminal on the other side of passport control.

Choice between the Reuben Sandwich or a salad with vegetables.
Took the Sandwich and was positively surprised, especially after reading all the stories in this thread.
I believe it’s absolutely ok for a an hour flight at this time. Accompanied with a Lindt ball and Lindt bar.
Need to note that I fly business class very seldom, Upgraded this time as it was a A330 flight.View attachment 316354
You're very generous.

Feb 5 WLG-MEL, a steak something. Was surprisingly good. Anyone know if this is catered out of Wellington?

FA took my order first and bought it directly to me from the galley, then proceeded to serve everyone else with the trolley. Also pillows are back on trans-tasman! How exciting.

Feb 5 MEL-SYD 5:30pm flight, a pasta something that to be honest I don't quite recall. Wasn't that great to be honest. The garlic-y bread was nice though. I wish Qantas did full on Garlic Bread like NZ does.

We were served 1A -> 3F, instead of the status order that I've seen on most other flights recently.

Oh yum, that first one looks goo-good! And I've never seen it before. Second one is the pasta with smoked pork and I agree, not the most amazing dish.

Also agree on the garlic bread, a highlight on Air NZ and many other airlines, can't be that hard to make. Air NZ's meal service is generally widely superior to Qantas on the Tasman imho.

What are the J meals on the Alliance Embraer 190 like? We've had some flights CBR-BNE changed over from the Boeing 717...

I went to select seats (incidentally) on the new flight, and was only able to select aisle or window seats, which is odd given its QFF Gold and J seating...

Was on QF52 yesterday SIN BNE. I took note of the “tailor your dining experience” blurb, but what does it actually mean?
Quick drink service, orders taken, but they were too busy to do a refill of wine with dinner. Had the pork which was tasty, but had to ask for another slice of bread ( a fair bit of sauce). Response was “I’ll see if we have some more”. They did thankfully. Staff we busy almost running between seats. Perhaps they were one short in J? A lacklustre experience.

Thee J meals are the same standard - no real difference.

As for the seating. That suggests the cabin is near capacity. You mention "seats" which suggests multiple passengers - this also probably factors into this. And you're still coming up against that WP and P1/CL have higher dibs on say row 1 or maybe 2, so the amount of options may be limited, specially in a relatively small J cabin. You may get more specific options at T-80.

6:30pm MEL - SYD on the Airbus.

Rare beef soba noodle salad. In a word, it was unseasoned.

Other option was the Kung Pao Chicken making the rounds lately…

Nothing new to see here.

anyone seen the MEL to SIN business class menu?
I have a little one who has a dairy/egg allergy so wondering if there may be anything she could eat.
