Qantas BNE-LAX direct flights have disappeared in July ??

Feels like we’re back to the glory days with several Qantas flights a day to multiple European destinations. My understanding is that Qantas doesn’t have the rights for daily flights into France, which is probably why Rome gets the nod instead.

They have the rights for 6x weekly into France on a 787-9 (it's based on number of seats - they could only do 3x weekly A380s).

They also have the rights for 25x weekly into Germany, daily into MAD/BCN , daily into ATH, daily into DUB, and more than daily on a 787 (2800 seats weekly) into all of the Nordic countries + AMS (except Iceland, no rights apparently).

Not an exhaustive list but rights into Europe isn't the problem - it's airport slots (and aircraft obviously).

They could probably lease some of the slots that EK and QR aren't using at the moment, and maybe even some of their aircraft and crew.

I would imagine some finance people are doing the numbers to see what's profitable in different scenarios. But hard to plan when no one really knows when this current war will end.

Looks like the new Sydney to Paris via Singapore is not bookable as a Sydney to Singapore only (or at least not in late April into May when I looked.
I was hoping to book just the CDG-SIN but it doesn’t seem to be offered as separate flights.

I would have hoped Qantas to push some London travellers onto QF233 and free up some seats on QF1...

I doubt they’ll be letting anyone on until pax have been rebooked to CDG. It’s not a priority for them at the moment.

My understanding is flights going west will be via SIN except for FCO - because of the extra distance imposed by the ME situation.
Flights heading east generally have prevailing winds to help it along

No, CDG is via SIN in both directions.

I'm sure they eventually will given some pax originally booked PER-CDG will join in SIN.. but agree get the already booked pax transferred first.

The other thing is that AF may be asking for more seats on SIN-SYD for its codeshare. That goes for all the Euro carriers really.

I don't think pax O/D'ing in SIN are a priority.

If SYD-CDG starts to go via SIN instead of PER, does this also mean Qantas can use a cheaper Singapore-based crew for this route (once that base opens)?

Why, if already booked on QF1 they want to go to LHR not CDG.
I meant that passengers bound for LHR can fill in QF233 for SYD-SIN leg and change for QF1 to LHR, which will free up seats for SIngaporeans, Malaysians and Indonesians needing to go home to Asia.

That makes absolutely no sense. They're both going to Singapore.

If there's capacity to carry pax to Asia - just get on QF233. But the priority for both flights will be those going to Europe.

For a data point about what they're doing with existing bookings...

I am booked (via Amex Travel) to travel in Economy from SYD to LHR, departing on Fri 24 Jul. After the news about the schedule changes broke this afternoon, I noticed changes to my flights in the Qantas app.

Original flights
  • QF33: 14:05 SYD-PER 17:00
  • QF9: 18:35 PER-LHR 05:05 (+1)
Revised flights
  • QF233: 14:00 SYD-SIN 20:30
  • QF219: 21:50 SIN-LHR 05:05 (+1)
In summary:
  • I now leave SYD 5 minutes earlier, and arrive into LHR at the same time
  • City of connection changes from PER to SIN
  • The connection gets a little hotter (1 hr 20 mins, instead of 1 hr 35 mins)
  • Seat selection on the original flights carried through to the new flights:
    • QF33 (SYD-PER) seat selection carried through to QF233 (SYD-SIN)
    • QF9 (PER-LHR) seat selection carried through to QF219 (SIN-LHR)
  • Upgrade requests carried through to the new flights, but the upgrade request page is still showing the points required based on the original legs
    • Page shows a request at 13,100 point for an upgrade to Premium Economy on the QF233 (SYD-SIN) flight (a bargain - it should be 40,900 based for SYD-SIN)
    • Page shows a request at 130,800 points for an upgrade to Business on the QF219 (SIN-LHR) flight (very much not a bargain - it should be 91,600 for SIN-LHR)
  • Reduction in SCs from 100 to 95 (actually from 200 to 190, as it is a DSC booking)
Amex Travel did later this afternoon send an email notifying me about the changes (and asking me to contact them to confirm my acceptance or to discuss possible options). Red text in the email flags the changes as "Flight number change", "City of connection change" and "Major time change".

SIN-LHR

Request for ORC?
Thanks. Edited above to read "QF219 (SIN-LHR)" in the appropriate spot. Glad to have a late night proof-reader around!

ORC did cross my mind (but I'll probably be too embarrassed to do that over 10 SCs, especially given everything that is happening presently).

66% reduction in MEL-PER on A330's? They really don't want us Mexicans on a widebody hey.

Interesting as the aircraft that operates QF71 PER-SIN during the week comes across as QF767 from MEL. Weekends the aircraft remains on the ground between QF71/72 sectors.
