This is exactly the same as when Woolworths has sales of 2 for $x or 3 for $x and so on but if you buy one you pay full price.

Actually I like sales like that because I can put some of the items aside and use them later.

Not possible with this sale. :(

Damn...I've already used my points to book a Business class fare in August - PER to CDG. I checked the Qantas website and I could have booked similar dates:(

I'm thinking of all those points and SC I could have earned, especially as I'm trying to retain Platinum by September.

Also those 448K points I burned could have been handy in coming years to upgrade from Y as I travel to Paris at least once a year. I'm sure that there are probably going to be more J seats available due to the economic crisis but then again any sale would also reduce availability for upgrades

Maybe it would have been useful to have Buy 1 Get 1 Free tickets, so then if you travel as a solo - you can go two trips, rather than taking your other half.

This i would not mind, would be useful for sure :)

You could always cancel your award flights for 5000 points penalty per ticket, and book your flights with this promo:mrgreen:

But then it wouldn't be a Valentines Day, aka score brownie points, sale.

I cancelled a one way J award for two MEL-SYD-LHR yesterday and booked a return J ticket MEL-LHR for $11,500 for two people yesterday. Lost 10,000 points for cancelling but still waaaaaay in front as the cost for two would normally be around $24K. Depart 12 Aug return 26 Sep so great value and no need to go via SYD.

One happy chappy here. Last night I used this 2 for 1 fare for a 3 week trip in South Africa!

As an added bonus, since the intercontinental flights are in Sydney, Qantas will be giving me 80 SCs for the 2 x 1 hour connections from MEL<->SYD in domestic business. So by my calculations, I'm looking at a return Business fare on a 744 with skybed to South Africa for $3,900 AI earning:

- 400 SCs (2 x 160(Int'l), 2 x 40(Dom)) - btw, I know this is still paltry compared to YUP/KUP earners
- 55,000 QFF points (23,000 for flights with lowly PS status at the time, 32,000 via Earth Plat 4:1 promo til March since I bought both tickets at $8K)

I value QFF points at about 3c so that's effectively a refund of $1,500 which makes my ticket price $2,500 (not counting the value of the SCs).

Now to plan my picnic with the lions in Kruger, the pool party with the sharks in Cape Town, and how not to get murdered in Jo'burg.

Not sure I agree that it is exactly the same. If I need 1 bag of rice but it is cheaper to buy more than I will buy more bags of rice. The other day at Coles the Farmland tuna brand was on sale at 10 fo $8 so I bought 30 cans. Enough to last me 7-8 weeks but they were only 80c each.

In my opinion the point of the Qantas sale is to try and make up the shortfall in forward bookings and sell as many seats as possible by offering 2-for-1 sale with the added gimmick of Valentines Day. But Qantas has neglected to target a significant percentage of travellers, the single traveller, which could have boosted sales.

I have no plans to go anywhere but if an airfare was available at the same price as the individual airfare under the 2-for-1 sale then I would have more than likely gone somewhere simply because the airfare looked enticing. Now I am not going anywhere and the airline has lost a sale.

Yes but John, just how 'significant' do you think sole travellers are? (outside of business travellers) Really?... This forum is a very niche audience I would suspect a huge % of people in gen are infact travelling in pairs/groups especially when it comes to leisure travel which they are targetting.

So for QF its perfect - low hanging fruit. Some people miss out, and thats life I guess!

I imagine that the effect of offering half price business seats is that business folk would snap up cheap seats. Qantas want them to pay full price!

I guess it would all depend on the flight. I don't know the actual statistics but at a guess I would say ~40%-50% of the travellers on the international flights I have taken appear to be travelling alone. Are they business travellers? Not easy to tell.

Didn't they have a similar 2-for-1 sale in November last year for all classes of travel?

I'm pretty sure it was all classes. I know someone who booked 2 for 1 in business for travel in May 08.

Yes, but that was still not a half price offer on a single ticket.
Very close though. When I looked at airfares during the sale SYD-SIN return for 1 person was ~$1500 and for 2 people it was ~$1580.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

With this 2 for 1 deal, was it available for a one-way ticket purchase or only return flights ?

Good question, i think it was ok one way from memory, but of course you had to be traveling with you partner on the same flights etc. I am about 50% sure i checked a one-way fare for one of the flights i booked with this and a friend.
