I'm lucky enough to have a friend with a place in Sydney overlooking the harbour, so I won't have to pay these OUTRAGEOUS prices to watch the fireworks - bear in mind that only some of these hotels even have harbour views... check them out on Wotif:

Meriton Pitt street - normally $169 - NYE $1,999

Meriton World Tower - normally $165-229 - NYE $2,999

Shangri-La - normally $268 - NYE $1,380 per night, min 2 nights

Park Hyatt - normally $250 - NYE $1,200 per night, min 3 nights

Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour - normally $159 - NYE $749

Grand Mercure Darling Harbour - 4 night min over NYE, $669 + 2,900 + 2,300 + 669 = $6,538 for accom 30-Dec to 2-Jan

The Grace Hotel - $750 per night, min 3 night stay

Now I understand you pay extra for New Years Eve, but really this is far too much. It's absolute gouging.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm not really sure which surprises me more. The prices or the fact that it means there is availability. I would have thought some of those properties would be well full by now.

Maybe they are, but for $800 perhaps they'll gamble and run the risk of walking some PriceLiner who checks in late.

Ridiculous!

Glad I will be overseas and do not require accommodation in Sydney.

Supply and demand. If there are people who will pay the high rates, then it is unsurprising that the hotels will charge them; no different ime to trying to get hotels in Melbourne when the Grand Prix is on

Yeah, it's a bit late on Xmas eve but this Santa just can't fit back up that chimney after a red or 14 - the kiddies are finally in bed, so forgive my late response.

Some fools will pay those prices but hotels will always charge more than what people will pay, this is why we have hotel memberships etc.

I did a NYE at the then Old Sydney Parkroyal, saw the fireworks on the roof with the family and didn't sleep a bit due to the 1.76M people celebrating all nite outside at the Rocks.

Never been back.

Best wishes for a restful Xmas and the whole of the rest of New Year.

Is this really that much different to Airline Yield Management and the pricing structures that it creates?

There's lots of demand so they create price tiers... I'm sure those that booked much earlier in the year aren't paying $1699/night.

I think its good the hotels find people to pay these sorts of rates. Helps subsidise the rest of us :D

It is not only NYE in Sydney that is the problem this year.

I normally attend the Sydney Test for days 2/3/4 and therefore normally book in on the 2 Jan onwards and up to this year have been able to get Crown Plaza, The Grace, Sheraton etc for good packages of around 170-200.

This year the cheapest is 350 at these hotels. Why ? 15000 poms have booked the test for seats, many will sleep with friends I'm sure, but many have taken the hotels above on packages at much less I price thab I was quoted.

Anyway, haven't stayed in the Sydney burbs for quite a while, but will this year.

It's supply-v-demand.

NYE accom in Dubbo is probably cheaper, though I doubt the fireworks will be as good.

LOL the hotels all tell you it's supply and demand - what a load of cough. Do a search for new years eve in 4 years time and you'll find prices starting around 200% above rack rate. You can't honestly tell me they are booked out already so far in advance....

Hotels *KNOW* customers will (have to) pay through the nose for certain key dates. They keep a nice calendar of events/concerts/special dates and adjust prices in advance to reflect what they know they can get away with.

Airlines are the same to a lesser extent.
