premium economy

JohnK - I agree I wont convince you that for you Y+ is a value proposition. I agree that for a lot of people the return to them for paying for Y+ is too small to be able to justify it. What I would like you to acknowledge is that for some people there is a return. You might not agree with their internal value assessment in the same way that some people would not see going to Thailand as a good use of funds but you need to acknowledge that people may value this differently.

I cannot justify premium economy pricing let alone business class pricing.

It is easy to justify something when spending someone elses money. The best excuse is I need to go to New York for a week and I need to be on the ground running so business class is the only option for me. Rubbish! Save $10,000 on the airfare and have a day off work the day before and day after and you still achieve the same result. Do the words selfish or I am better than you have any meaning?

Great here we go again lets spend someone else money and who cares about anyone else.

I have to bite on this though. Business class travel for me is a deal breaker with an employer. If my employer to be wants my skills then I want business class travel. In deciding to employ me the organisation decides whether I am worth that premium.

Personally if I was offered say 50% of the saving for travelling in whY rather than J I still would not take the job - I have no need to travel if it is in whY.

I dont know why you think that is selfish and wrong and I dont understand this "spending other people's money comment". It's a cost of doing business in the same way as any cost - if you want good people you have to pay/fund what they are worth.

I agree with JohnK on this one; BA had WT+ available between Oz and SIN/BKK for less than $1.5k return. This until 1 April where the BA fare now skyrockets with Qantas' implementation of Y+. It has been suggested that this is due to the QF/BA JSA.
I also forgot to mention how much QF really values premium economy.

We earn 10% extra FF points, over WHY, when flying premium economy.

We need 50% extra FF points, over WHY, to redeeem a premium economy award seat.

We pay 100%* extra, over WHY, for a premium economy airfare.

* This can change based on different routes, sales, seasonality etc.

I thought I did acknowledge that some people may see value in premium economy but in my opinion it is not worth it. I am not against premium economy just the pricing structure.

I have been the most outspoken against QFs premium economy pricing structure. Some people have been having a go at me and fair enough. This new premium economy product will appeal to some people and more than likely will be very successful. Good luck to them as there are people prepared to pay a premium for a fraction more comfort. Not worth it but that is only my opinion.

No way known I'll fork out that much extra $$ for WT+; any upgrade requests I make will exclude the Y+ option. If I don't get that upgrade then my 46C seat is fine.

I haven't seen how upgrades work with Y+. Is the rule still that you can only upgrade a single class? In that case wouldn't an upgrade from Y only put you in Y+? And if you want a chance of upgrading to J you would need to be booked in Y+?

Or can you still upgrade from Y->J ?

It is listed as an option:
Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Flight Upgrades

You can use your points for a flight upgrade on Qantas domestic and international flights.
Flight upgrades are available on:
  • Discount Economy^ (excluding N, O or Q class) to Premium Economy*
  • Full Economy to Premium Economy*
  • Discount Economy^ (excluding N, O or Q class) to Business,
  • Full Economy to Business
  • Premium Economy* to Business
  • Business to First.

I was just thinking that it would be a shame if some people booked the "new exciting QF premium economy" and actually booked a BA codeshare and got the tired old bunky product. Wouldn't go down so well. The 2 Y+ products are not comparable and its ridiculous that they are priced the same.

No seats have been allocated at the moment in the PE section. I'll know in a little while if my 'application' for a PE seat has been approved :)

Seat hasn't cleared the "seating requests" section of Qantas it appears. So perhaps Qantas aren't assigning seats in the PE section unless they really have to (or it could be an 'upgrade' thing at Check-in.) Called QF, and was told the seating request was still in the system and didn't appear actioned or denied. Unusual based on my experience. Settled on a reasonable seat while I'm waiting for the seating request to clear or fail.

I had a look at what other airlines earn rates are for PE vs Y

VS - 50% extra miles
NZ - Disc Y from BNE-LHR $110 / PE $150
BA - Disc Y from BNE-LHR 2572 miles / Full Y 10287 miles / PE 12859 miles.

All more than 10%

Not that I am likely to travel in PE anytime soon anyway.

If you want bad value in terms of marginal FF points for premium cabins - look at J and F - 25% and 50% for 300% and 500% price premiums.

and compare the status earning rates to those of AA, where everything above a B economy fare earns at the same rate (EQP). So a B economy fare and an F fare earn the same number of Elite Qualifying Points.

Don't get me started on that

Just look at my travel this calendar year:

syd-hkg-pvg-nrt-syd
syd-mel-hkg-tpe-nrt-ord-lga,jfk-lhr-lca-lhr-hkg-syd

So far only 64K qpoints - 2/3 of qualification for top tier on AA. If all had been booked to QF I would have 1800+ SCs... and since Sep I would have 2500 SCs... So the question rears it's head again - what is of more value to me - cheaper flight redemptions or status...

it works well for me since most of my economy travel (both domestic and international) is booked in B. So my recent SIN-BNE-SIN in B earned maximum status (EQP) on AA, but would have been considered discount economy for SC earning on QF.

It is only when I get on that CX flight to HKG in July that I will truly be able to savour the benefits of AA over QF...

To redeem a WHY SYD-BKK return award requires 60,000 QFF points + surcharges. A bronze QFF member would require 13.08 one way WHY flights to earn these points.

To redeem a premium economy SYD-BKK return award requires 90,000 QFF points + surcharges. A bronze QFF member would require 17.84 one way premium economy flights to earn these QFF points.

Another point is why not purchase 2 WHY seats instead of a premium economy seat? The 2 WHY seats would cost less than the premium economy seat, only require to pay genuine taxes once, provide more comfort and earn the same amount of SCs but an extra 90% QFF points.

I do not see QF premium economy product good value. Just my opinion. Others will see some value in QFs premium economy product and from some of the reports on AFF sales appear to be going along well.

I also find it weird that with QF/BA agreements the BA World traveller plus product has increased in line with the QF premium economy product....
