Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

We're referring to policies that are being discussed at DFT and the Home Office, there's possible changes coming to the UK. It's not as certain as the papers would have you believe, although I haven't caught up with the progress from today's meetings yet nor do I have any desire to. Too depressing.

Too depressing indeed. I try to now not touch any media/news, it is too much.

I was waiting and holding off on changing job last year due to the fact that I might be able to travel overseas to see my fiancé sometime early/mid 2021 once the vaccines take affect.

I have now given up and changed jobs for a better career opportunity (start in 2 weeks) knowing that I now cannot get leave for about 12 months in a new job.

I am hoping Feb 2022 I can travel overseas

I reckon very beginning of 2022 you will be OK to travel. There may be restrictions to where you can travel, i.e. yes for NZ, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, but no to USA and Europe (at least beginning of 2022). There also may be mutliple COVID tests on return and maybe 3-7 days home quarantine????? Travel stopped as I recall 17/3/2020, if it marks two years this is 17/3/2022.

Scomo came out a few days ago and acknowledges we need to open up the minute health allows and not a minute later, and as part of this stated may not be a hard no to travel very end of this year.

I'm using 2 year anniversary of closure as my date, and will make QFF booking Singapore return maybe leaving Saturday 26th March 2022. Not wanting Singapore per se, but this can be hop off spot to Malaysia or Indonesia or Thailand or Cambodia or Vietnam (probably in that order of preference).

Good luck.

Big USA/Europe trip I missed/cancelled in Sept/Oct 20 I stressed about retaking same time 2021, then accepted fate and planned for 2022, now pressing plans for than back to 2023. Combination of being allowed to go there, and COVID safety given those locations.

Happy to do (relatively) safe SE Asia locations pretty much as soon as borders open.

Travel stopped as I recall 17/3/2020
Close. That was the day the compulsory quarantine was brought in; I remember it well as it was announced the afternoon before when I was in the air, and I flew into SYD that morning. The travel ban took effect midday 24 March after an announcement the night before. Hotel quarantine started 29 March, with the states charging from various dates after that. Crazy days.

cheers skip

The funny thing is... the goal we’re after is “herd immunity”. The only county that will achieve that very soon is the USA.

The last count is about 25 million? That’s on a positivity rate of approx 20%. Half of the country believe COVID doesn’t exist, and approx 20% of rural areas have no testing capability. I know several friends in the US who have never completed a COVID swab, however have since had blood tests that show antibodies. So what do we assume? I’d say 100 million is a conservative estimate of the population infected. Add on 100 million vaccines and come March/April, the USA has 2/3 of the population immune.

At what cost? That’s for the historians to decide. But we’ll still be debating if we can travel to Brisbane because they found a trace in the s**t in Penrith.

LOL yeh exactly. Australian states will continue opening and closing borders like it's a light switch every time 1 case is found. Unbelievable.

The Aussie government keeps getting praise for saving lives that would have possibly died from Covid, yet livelihoods are being destroyed by the policies of WA, Queensland, SA etc.

This idea of a covid-free country is a fallacy. If that's what the government wants, Australia will never open up again.

To those who continually think Australia's economy is fine, you will only see the damage this does later in the aftermath. For example, I don't actually think many people realise the trouble universities are in: Australian universities warn of economic ripple effect if international students remain locked out. Education is one of our key sources of income. Many international students have already begun to look elsewhere.

Furthermore, Australia is pushing ahead with its dependence on coal experts, however, the majority of the western world is pushing away from this.

If the government doesn't decide on a plan for opening Australia back up soon, the aftermath is going to be economic bloodbath. Which will mean high taxes and interest rates for Australians and no GDP growth for many years to come. At which time Australia will still be closed off to international visitors.

Friend went back to Ireland this week with Qatar ADL DOH 7 people in economy with 15 staff but DOH DUB more crowded although she still got a row to herself. She sent a photo of when they landed everyone standing up waiting to disembark all jammed together - 🤦‍♀️

once the population (or all those that are willing to have it, which will include myself) have the vaccine ..... why do you need any measures to prevent spread?

Depends on what you think you get from the ‘vaccine’, how long the ‘vaccine’ lasts, what population you are referring to...

The population of Australia

"what you get" - either it stops transmission, or it doesnt, but either way a DRASTIC reduction in symptoms and need for people to be hospitalised.

the question is really .... if you dont open up after everyone that wants is is vaccinated, when do you? when we remove all disease from the entire globe? ie ..... never ?

I actually believe the Australian government is aiming for Covid to be eradicated globally before borders open - so never actually seems to be what they're going for.

There is absolutely no roadmap or talks when things may open up again.

why do you want to keep your population safe from something they are vaccinated from?

How could it get any lower than it is now? I believe more people have died from being washed off rocks this weekend than the entire Queensland COVID death toll for a year.

So why are we even being vaccinated? What’s the point. And again, I can see why people are apprehensive.

To avoid any doubt, I 100% agree with both of you

They know it can’t be eradicated. Most viruses are not eradicated.

I think the federal government is walking a tightrope and is unsure of how to sell the country opening up to the world to the Australian public, while the state governments (possible exception NSW) have seeded the fear for their own selfish purposes.

but the question becomes:

why do you want to keep your population safe from something they are vaccinated from?

I agree with you completely. Which is why this is beyond infuriating for myself and many others now. They will find some way, some how to keep the country closed. The scientists have already come out and started crowing about how the vaccine isn't the solution, and Australia will remain closed till God knows when.

Brendan Murphy has already come and said, before vaccinations have even started that we Australia will remain closed till at least 2022 because "We don't know whether that will prevent transmission of the virus". And he has also said the whole population will be vaccinated and then "we'll look at what happens": 'The answer is probably no': International travel likely off the cards for 2021

I genuinely don't think they want to open up the country till Covid is completely eradicated globally, ergo, never. It's been close to a year of lockout and things look more bleak than ever. And we can forget any travel corridors or bubbles this year too.
