Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

This brief article by a former German research scientist provides a very concise wrap-up about CV vaccine types, their relative strengths/weaknesses, from an Australian perspective.

So the next national cabinet meeting is this Friday. If I remember correctly, last time they were working on a traffic light system and home quarantine for low risk countries.

What's the bet that they actually have not done anything about it and are just 'discussing' again

The problem with National Cabinet functioning properly is QLD and WA.

All the rest of the states seem relatively aligned but it is hard to do anything meaningful with these two floundering around by themselves, QLD especially because of its economic and social integration with VIC and NSW. The nation could probably live without WA participating to be honest and the Federal Government has indicated they care less about WA - in that respect.

Apparently the rumours are that Dan Andrews is being asked to try and bring WA and QLD into the tent now VIC is well under control and he has the time to do some more work in this space...... And Brett Sutton (VIC CHO) also had a meeting with our QLD CHO.... So maybe with VIC back in the picture acting as a diplomat to calm the waters we may see some more positive steps.

Fingers crossed at least.

The cynical would say Qld worked with Vic to understand their numbers and get assurance to open borders (remove quarantine requirement) a la AcT

Not to say Vic won’t try to get a NATional answer

Thats a bit of a kick in the guts to Australians stuck overseas. Also seems a bit odd that we’re bringing in foreigners to do a job here when so many locals are out of work.
Right in line with the prison colony they are pushing bringing in people for specific job while free citizens who want to travel are told they cannot be with their families "Arbeit Macht Frei"

In 1788, Lieutenant Philip Gidley King, along with a party of 15 convicts and seven free men, arrived on Norfolk Island to set up a British colony. So, was it the poms who set up this concept? 😉

Good news
90% effective at this stage

“Gathering the required safety data will take until the third week of November, says the company. The dossier will then be submitted to the regulators for approval. Speedy licensing could mean the first doses being given to healthcare workers by the end of the year.”

shame it’s the Pfizer one

But locals won’t do that work...

Or, if they do, they will do it so poorly as to be cost- and quality-prohibitive.

It’s a long-standing problem in agriculture - made a lot worse by the pandemic.

They will do it. But they won’t (and nor should they) for the slave wages being paid to these fly in staff.

The problem is fruit and veggie picking is a job most locals don't want to do.And that is happening now all around Australia.

The UK had similar - went on a big recruitment drive and just failed. Plus it's actually a fairly skilled job, so lots of training required to actually be any good at it etc. In the end they still had to import a lot of workers to meet demand.

Japan bubble watch: 782 new cases across 37 of Japan's 47 prefectures yesterday (generally the slowest day of the week) including 200 in Hokkaido, 157 in Tokyo, and 78 in Osaka. We won't be in any sort of bubble with them any time soon.
Right now based on case numbers, for SE Asia, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand. Given the choice I'd head over to Cambodia. Been there three times, awesome spot. Don't expect any ability to visit any of these places until second half of 2021 though. Vaccine announcement today, albeight preliminary results, looking promising.

I read another thread that the vaccine was based on low participant numbers??? Can someone inform how many participants there are in the (Pfizer was mentioned today, right?) vaccine trial of interest today?

From an ABC news report, I see the statement that:

The early analysis looked at just 94 infections recorded so far in a study that has enrolled nearly 44,000 people

But they need 164 COVID infections to finalise the Phase 3 trial efficiacy percentage, so they need another 70 infections. As I understand, if they get 164 COVID infections, and for example 16 infections amongst vaccinated, and remaining 148 infected had placebo, 148/164 = 90% efficiacy level. In my opinion this should be backed up by challenge trials after to confirm this number is real.
