Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Who wants to go overseas without insurance (Emirates offer does not work for Australia as Govt has to be recommending overseas travel is OK) and face a 1 in 5 chance of paying (needing) medical help.

Worth noting that is seems the Emirates policy only excludes cover where there is a specific ban on travel. This does not include travel advice (to 'not travel'). It must be a ban. Otherwise you will be covered. There's also a limited number of destinations where Aussies have reciprocal health arrangements, and of course some dual nationals will also have health cover when returning 'home'.

What happens in this scenario:
Flight leaves 28th June to go overseas and return to Australia July 28th.
Australia allows international travel 1st July.
Will they let us go still or have to leave on the 1st July?

At which point they'll cross out 2021 and replace it with 2022.

Travel commencing 2021 would at best mean 1st July 2021, not commencing 1st January 2021. Might put this to the test, Speedway 31st July 2021 in Wroclaw, be good to go and see that. Warm over there too during coldest part of the year here. Can't do that with 14 day quarantine though, that's a holiday killer.

If the date is 1 July then no travel before then I would assume.

You are, aren't you* ? 🤣

* considering relativity of commonwealth payments to states/territories, unless your profile location is incorrect and you're based in QLD, ACT, SA or TAS

According to figures published by ABC in 2018 (which may have changed since then), while only having 0.9% of the population they receive greater than 4% of national GST revenue distribution. Despite this the NT is still spending around $4M per day more than it receives from all sources.

Therefore every person outside the NT living in Australia is paying significant amounts towards the support of every person living in the NT and we are all NT taxpayers.

Some more indications that things won't be anywhere near normal for a long time.

Koh Samui putting some ridiculous conditions on letting foreign tourists in even if the government will let them come.

South Africa has opened up domestically but no foreigners yet.

We are off Israel's list though Kiwis can still go.

And then there is LOTFAP.
Hawaii probably going to defer opening to any tourists.

And a sad story from the Big Apple.I am very unlikely to see it again.

The Koh Samui restrictions don’t seem that crazy... at least to us Aussies. To the american writing it I suppose it sounds crazy... but we are used to the idea of quarantine here in Australia. Thailand as a whole is mandating quarantine, so you might as well do it at some nice resort than in bangkok? Flying TG into USM... they only have one or two flights a day, if that anymore. The rest are all operated by Bangkok Airways... although with a TG code i think.

I theory you could fly to thailand, work from your hotel for the first week (so working, not annual leave), then have two weeks holiday, then back to australia.

Yes, agreed. Interestingly since I've been in hotel quarantine in Singapore, I've had various work calls. I've been asked by several US based colleagues (on different calls) if the hotel as a nice pool, good gym and nice restaurants. It's then I have to explain I'm not actually allowed to leave the room. I think hotel quarantine is a foreign concept to many. Interestingly, I haven't been asked this by local (Asian, Australian) colleagues - just how am I coping in the room, and what's the food like.

Agreed. It is actually quite a sensible approach.

Where you would have to do another 14 days of hotel quarantine, assuming you could get a flight because of the limits on incoming pax.

True, but the two weeks in an Australian hotel could be working. Depends how long this all drags on... if it's well into next year, a two week break, despite hotel quarantine, could be worth it :(

your flight you would have to secure with business class... but if you're working from home, and holidaying in Koh Samui, business class is possibly on the agenda anyway.

Uncertainty is hard. One of my favourite things I look forward to is travelling oversea's one a year, to get away from everything. Travelling domestic just isn't the same, and as much as each State Premier thinks a holiday is a holiday, it is not. Just isn't.

Thinking booking a QFF flight somewhere (maybe Thailand, never been and they are looking very good at COVID handling and maybe this might be achievable) mid July 2021 just to get me thinking it'll all be over soon. Worst case can cancel booking and lose 6,000 points.

Was dismissive of vaccine success a while ago, but starting to look more positive on this. Best case jab in arm middle of next year, and of course reliant on world governments, including Scomo telling us it's safe.

I will be taking the punt that we will be able to travel in Sep/Oct 21 and will make rewards booking for JP and CA later this year. Like @oznflfan mentioned if I have to take a points hit or pay the SQ redeposit fee to cancel then I will just deal with that at the time.
