If Australia locks into the bubble it may be on terms that make it much harder to bilaterally open up travel elsewhere. Interesting times...

I think the point is, unless we can eliminate COVID-19 from globe, there is never going to fully eliminate the virus in one country, especially when sometime later is year, we need to reopen our borders somehow as you cannot lock yourselves out forever.

The thing is, how our government is being effective to control an outbreak should be the most important thing rather than closing yourself forever.

On opening the borders we need to step by step, so I am hoping with Trans-Tasman bubble, we can have a mechanism to safely open up our borders to other countries again.

If the price the nation pays for opening the borders is more than the benefit that it gets, then do you genuinely need to open the borders to quarantine-free travel? I've changed my view on this after reading various economic papers. The biggest positive impact we can have on our economy right now is to remove and keep removed any social distancing measures. Several times greater economic benefit than having the borders open. The RBA say this, various economic thinktanks say it. If opening the borders means ongoing social distancing and closing the borders means no social distancing, then in order to avoid a much deeper recession than we already face we should be keeping borders closed. Of course, if the medicos believe we can open borders without retaining social distancing restrictions then that's a different story (we may be able to with NZ - it's not clear that would be the case with other countries at this stage).

Given that the mass gathering yesterday was approved in SA then clearly the push here is to remove all number quotas throughout. Regardless of the cause, if that was considered safe then all bets are off.

I posted a link awhile back on the clusters with the most cases.Only one happened outside but then it was a soccer match in Italy with the stadium roof closed. So maybe social distancing not needed outside.Dining Al fresco from now on perhaps.

Well in approximately 2 weeks thanks to the protests we will either have a second wave or absolutely no reason state borders should be kept shut :)

That assumes logic at work , rather than politics which I fear is now rising to to fore again after a welcome abatement.

So we'll never eat out in London again, never have the weather to be able to dine al fresco....

I seriously don't understand what people are protesting for, especially this is getting the risk of COVID-19 is becoming a lot higher.

Especially this will slow down our timeline of reopening our borders, as well as reopening of restaurants, pubs, clubs etc. to 100 people and risk Queensland delaying the open our borders to NSW and Victoria.

I sincerely hope that this protest will not lead to community transmission, or else we risk we will need to wait longer until we can travel to Asia/NZ again.

Well the protests are going to prove one way or another if mass gatherings out of doors leads to increased viral transmission or not.Especially the gatthering in London.Squashed together like sardines and very few masks in sight.
As there are still large numbers of infected in London this will be the real test in 2 weeks. The various NYC protests also should prove interesting watching.

Breaking News: Queensland is deciding when to open its borders this week

I sincerely hope the border in Queensland will be able to open from Mid-July, as well as other states, so that we can open our borders with NZ soon and then we can go to Asia by October school holidays.

Malaysia reopens economy

Malaysia says it will reopen nearly all economic activity and allow interstate travel starting on Wednesday, lifting coronavirus restrictions imposed nearly three months ago as it moves to revive an economy battered by the pandemic.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced in a televised address on Sunday that the novel coranvirus outbreak was “successfully” under control and Malaysia would begin a new recovery phase until August 31.

“I am aware the government cannot control your lives forever to control the virus,” Mr Yassin said.

The government will ease restrictions on social, education and religious activities in phases with health guidelines in place, and businesses will be allowed to return to normal operating hours.

Mr Yassin encouraged domestic holidays as travel between states will be allowed, but said international borders would remain closed.

Entertainment centres such as theme parks and night clubs, sports that involve close contacts and events involving a large gathering of people would be barred.

Malaysia had gradually reopened businesses over the past month with social distancing protocols, after shuttering all non-essential businesses and schools, banning public gatherings and restricting travel on March 18.

The pace of new coronavirus infections in the country, which in March was among the highest in Southeast Asia, has slowed in recent weeks. The number of known infections was at 8303, with a total death of 117, as of Saturday.

“Health Ministry statistics showed that the rate of infection amongst local residents is lowering and under control,” Mr Yassin said.“We will enter a normalisation phase from August 31 onwards until a vaccine is found.”

Malaysia’s fiscal deficit will nearly double to about 6 per cent of annual economic output this year because of the government’s recent efforts to revive the economy, the Finance Minister told Reuters on Saturday.

It appears that Malaysia has reopened the economy early, perhaps it might be earlier for my girlfriend to go back to Malaysia than me going back to Hong Kong, which makes me worried.

This is basically a controlled leak saying Nanny Anna is bout to backflip. Great news. Wait for it this week!

And I think in two weeks time after the dust settles from the marches, I think SA will open too. One of our prominent TAs who has some influence has been trying in recent weeks to spruik his SA packages. Because everyone needs a TA to go camping in the Flinders Ranges. Not. That clearly didn't get any traction and now he's actively spruiking Interstate travel for July school holidays. This was the guy who normally regales us of his suite class cruises, on very expensive lines, attending a couple of Christenings of ships, only flying J and F and rarely in SA. His business must have almost crashed.

I’d be very surprised if we opened this month unfortunately. The state of emergency ends on June 28th and think they will announce a July 3rd re-opening. Might be a small chance of opening to select states earlier IMO
