Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

So I doubt many will want to rush the phase 3 trials.

I would rather have a rushed vaccine than no vaccine which we will need to keep borders closed and staff working in tourism, aviation and HE sector stand down.

What's important for a vaccine is that it is a ticket to protect those who needs it and a ticket that would allow us to open our borders and end the pandemic which we can have our jobs back again.

Unfortunately, I feel like we have a sentiment of retirees here who just don't care about those who lost their jobs or their hours significantly down and that they are just looking after their own health, which if you care about Coronavirus and you don't trust a rushed vaccine, perhaps you can simply don't go out of home will protect yourself quite well.

Yet our economy doesn't work like that. In a world now where globalisation is more than ever, we really need our borders to reopen as soon as possible, which means we need to rush for a vaccine which will be equally safe and effective for us to exit the pandemic. I believe the technology in the 21st century can achieve that, the reason we needed more time to produce a vaccine earlier is simply because of lack of funding.

Now with funding being focused on providing a vaccine/cure for Coronavirus, I believe we should be able to have a solution by the end of the year which will end this pandemic and allow our borders to reopen in time for 2020/21 summer holidays in Australia, so that our tourism sector, aviation sector and HE sector, which is one of the largest sectors here in Australia, will be able to survive and thrive in the foreseeable future.

Very optimistic. I doubt some state borders will be open before Christmas.
I’ve abandoned all hope of international travel before this time next year and I’d be surprised if it happens much earlier than that

Yes I am a retiree but I still work filling in for others which means seein there are no holidays and no conferences to go to I haven't a job.

But I am a medico and I did my training in Respiratory Medicine so have a wee bit of understanding of the problems with vaccines.Sorry but you really are way too optimistic and although I desperately want to travel I will not be rushing a rushed vaccine.

That is an extremely dangerous assumption to make and is actually down right insulting. There are plenty of young people on here, and those that are older have children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces neighbours and friends who are also suffering.

Understand your pain, but perhaps calm down, reflect and reconsider your assumptions

Perhaps be a little more measured with your comments

The two main concerns with a "rushed vaccine" are whether it actually works well enough (which is probably easy enough to answer), and importantly whether it is safe (which may take longer to answer) - we don't want to get a few years down the track and find grave side effects from the vaccine - that could cause people real health issues - and a flow on effect in undermining confidence in vaccines in general (giving oxygen to the anti-vaxers).

The economic pain people feel is real, and it would be great if we found a solution very quickly. But not if the cure (or in this case the vaccine) is worse than the disease.

I know there are those that are pessimistic because of the lack of finding vaccines for Coronaviruses in the past. But a cause for optimism is simply the amount of resources being thrown at this effort, which could certainly help (compared to SARS, MERS etc).

And those of us oldies who have built up their business for years only to see it disappearing with every poor announcement.

However I think something will be happening by end of year with regards to vaccines. Not saying it will be available, just something happening.

Don’t confuse vaccine with magic. What is even more important for a vaccine is that it works, and doesn’t create more harm than it remedies.

we really need our borders to reopen as soon as possible
I understand and sympathise, but I don’t think we’re in the majority. Have a look at the large and braying crowds attending every report about Queensland and borders and demanding borders be closed immediately/more/sooner/forever. The fear and loathing has become quite hysterical since those 19 year olds returned from Victoria and created a lot of work for the contact tracers. I’d expect the same sentiment nationally about National borders and I’m sure Scomo has the numbers.

cheers skip.

A chilling read .. brrrrrr...

One assumes that cough Sapiens will continue to evolve and survive these bugs , but never in history have we been so numerous or interconnected.

We desperately need some prophylaxis , methodologies to minimise the infectivity .

WHAT HAPPENS IF DICTATOR TRUMP GETS TOLD A VACCINE WORKS, INJECTS 330 MILLION AMERICANS AND 12 MONTHS LATER THE VACCINE KILLS EVERYONE DUE TO LACK OF LONG TERM TESTING & OUTCOMES?

By then Donald Trump would have been get voted out and a treatment will be available.

Even a vaccine is effective for 1 year only, I think it is as good as a permanent vaccine, as we can buy time to explore effective treatments which we can return the world back to normal as early as we can.

Another blow for those wanting long haul flying to get back to normal quickly.IATA are predicting that won't happen until 2024.

That's understandable as considering people will be out of jobs and there will be an economic crisis after the pandemic, that means Corporate and Leisure travel will take a longer time to recover.

Absolutely. While the economic hardship is real, I think many people would prioritise the life of their loved ones more. That is completely natural, and probably the normal response. No one is going to trade the life of their mother or father so a 20-something property investor can fill their AirBnb for the weekend.

Perhaps we need to look at where these comments are coming from, and why. IATA represents airlines. Airlines want bailouts, they want government permission to waive contractual rights such as refunds, and they want governments to waive consumer protection laws (again, such as refunds). They want exemptions from social distancing.

IATA's grim predictions support the airlines in all their claims.

While it is true there are 1 million Australians out of work, there are 12 million still in work. They will still take take holidays.

Jacinda Ardern this morning talked about NZ's criteria for a quarantine-free travel bubble. It includes a requirement of no community transmission for a period of 28 days for the partner country. And she made it quite clear that she meant the accepted definition of "community transmission" being "transmission occurring within the community" as opposed to the definition that seems to have been adopted in (some parts of) Australia being "transmission occurring within the community which can't be traced to a known outbreak".

LOL see ya later trans tasman travel bubble then!

Plus 1 for Dr Ron, and he would get my vote. Many safe covid vaccines are available NOW. The objective is not blind controlled trials blah blah, and torpedo the economy another six-18 months waiting for mixed 'effective' signals. Even a 50% pass rate gets the drug companies rich. Many people, including doctors, are happy to accept the risks, considering their age group, health, and the opportunity costs of retirement age policies. The cost of giving the vaccine to high worth individuals is nothing. The only question who will accept the credentials of 'pre-approval' vaxxers going globetrotting. No probs, pony up another $100 antibody test, and you are good to go.

Now for the bad news. Many people are having strong, unpleasant reactions to the trial vaccines like headaches, redness, tired, because that's what vaccines do. As in a lot worse than your average flu shot. But you get over-it, and I don't believe anything drastic such as deaths. And some need a 2nd booster shot.
Plus some candidate's can only be given once.

The solution is simple. Mass vaccinations for those who can afford it, and signed a disclaimer. Because lets be honest. If the first approved vaccine for mass use is 95% effective, are we still content with the other 5% of superspreaders loose in the population? There are no 'risk free' solutions, end of story.

Well it isn't the drug companies you will be able to sue if there does turn out to be serious side effects of vaccines.

And I must admit I was naughty and had a little giggle at the name of the Astrazeneca exec commenting-Ruud Dobber.

I guess the devil will be in the detail. If a pharmaceutical company has been found to have wilfully lied, or misled regulators, I’d like it know if the indemnity still applies. It’s perhaps fair enough to indemnify if the company acts honestly. But i suspect there will be limitations to the indemnity.

Doesn't help that by Oct, my annual leave balance is going to reach 8 weeks which work deems "excessive", at which point they try to force people to use it. (They only count annual leave towards "excessive leave", not personal or long service.)
I'm not wasting my annual or long service leave to be stuck at home.

Well I has roughly 15 weeks of leave in total (including long service leave) just as this pandemic started. I would've loved to use it to go overseas and travel around Australia. However, to help my company financially and to keep myself and others in a job I've been using my leave. I'm now down to 12 weeks of long service leave and the new Melbourne stage 4 restrictions could mean I will have to use at least a further two weeks, but I fear at least a month as the economy will be in first gear down here for at least 6 weeks.

In times like this taking leave can be for the greater good of your company and work mates. Annual / long service leave is taken out of a company bank account where all the leave money is stored. Unlike personal leave which is taken directly from current revenue.

Companies can force staff to take leave in certain circumstances and if you're in Victoria then there is a good chance you may be forced to take leave, especially if the conpany just falls short of Job Keeper.
