Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Unfortunately not as it seemed. The restrictions on Southern African countries of concern for NSW are now removed, but all fully vaxxed intl arrivals are still required to complete 72 hours of isolation, at this time:

Ah. Can’t say I’m surprised. Mainstream media can’t seem to report anything accurately.

I guess we can say it’s a step in the right direction anyway. Hopefully this new variant just spreads like wildfire here now.

I think that’s a given. Unless we put a “ring of steel” around Newie. It’s gone

Otherwise known as the Gell-Mann Effect: Gell-Mann amnesia effect - Wikipedia.

Almost every time I was interviewed by the media in my working life (as a scientist), they screwed up the facts and tarted-up the story. It has always made me wary of believing anything in the MSM about other issues that I do not have specific knowledge about - ie. they got it wrong for me; ergo they have it wrong for everyone else.

I hope the 72 hour requirement disappears in VIC before the New Year.

The UK is getting rid of their red list again which is a step in the right direction.

Yes, pretty much a realisation that HQ does nothing to limit spread. Hopefully that's contagious.

Which is one reason why, during my 15 minutes of fame, that I refused any form of interview. They made it up anyway.

In which case they’ll stop all of the flights again. It wouldn’t matter if everyone in Oz had covid, they’d still be afraid of that new external variety. As I‘ve said all along, it took zero courage for any of the politicians (I won’t say leaders, ‘cos none of them are) to slam borders shut, and impose restrictions. It does take some courage to open up again. You can easily rank the pollies on a bravery scale.

In which case, Emperor formerly known as Mr, “I got re-elected with 68% of he popular vote” probably resides at the bottom of the bucket. Bravery in its brave way often means significant personal sacrifice. (never comeback home)

but I suppose the price paid was Qantas pulling the London flights from Perth and plonking them in Darwin....

More RWE data coming out showing vaccines are still providing cover from severe illness against Omicron but less effective against symptomatic infection. Which is probably why the CHO’s are seeming a little calmer, they would have got this a few days before the great unwashed 😂. So hopefully this means more rebuilding of the international flight network out of Australia.

Though the news from South Africa is that those double dosed with Pfizer are at more risk of hospitalisation from an Omicron infection than with Delta.
JOHANNESBURG, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine has been less effective in South Africa at keeping people infected with the virus out of hospital since the Omicron variant emerged last month, a real-world study published on Tuesday showed.

Between Nov. 15 and Dec. 7, people who had received two doses of the shot had a 70% chance of avoiding hospitalisation, down from 93% during the previous wave of Delta infections, the study showed.

Even more reason to boost Moderna-style?

I saw that also but sick of getting trolled, so you are braver than me :)

SA reduced to 7 days again now, in home quarantine.
Do we asssume that this means international passengers who fly into Melbourne or Sydney are clear to enter SA as a domestic traveller after 7 days?

Yes. Just a test 72 hours prior to entry. This is current, there are expected improvements to be announced for early New Year or late December once we hit 90% 12+. These will be announced in advance this Friday. I think Prof Spurrier may have left the building.

Fingers crossed that eventuates. I have my parents arriving MEL from UK early Jan and they are due to go to SA on day 9 following arrival.

During my trip to Adelaide at the weekend I noticed that Prof. Spurrier was listed as the requesting physician (or words to that effect) on my covid test paperwork. It's now framed and will be auctioned to the highest bidder as a momento of her time in office.;)

Yes, I have three of those. I think it will go cheap 😂. Your parents trip should work just fine.

QF just cancelled my SYD-LAX flight on 7th.

Not happy Jan. They've booked me via MEL. Not interested in that at all.

What annoys me most, not a single email, not even a notification when viewing my booking (you normally see the orange "your booking has been changed" messages).

Just as well I get my 3rd Pfizer on Friday then ;)

Son, DIL and toddler grandson left for UK last night. The parents had their third vaccination last week. They will need it. Now need to check on son and other DIL in UK have lined up for theirs. DIL is good about that and son who hates needles seems to be coping with it. All the family in UK for Christmas now. I think their risks will be the Christmas Mass, and the flight from Manchester to Doha.
