Personally I wouldn't see two, five or seven day's home quarantine being a deal breaker for international travel. It could be that people need to home Q for two days pending a negative test.

I think it depends on the circumstances of the traveller.

If it is an Australian who has been stuck overseas, then no problem at all as long as they have somewhere to quarantine.

If it is an Australian who has left the country to visit family/friends/be a tourist, and then returns home to Aus, also likely not to be a huge problem assuming they have somewhere suitable to quarantine, and can get enough time off work if they can't WFH during the quarantine period.

If it is an Australian who leaves and returns for work travel, not likely to be any sort of problem as their employer will have to wear the quarantine time.

If it is an international tourist, looking for somewhere to spend their limited holiday break, then I can see any form of quarantine, and even testing requirements, being enough for people to decide to give Australia a miss. Especially if there is added uncertainty that they could get locked into or out of a state due to a short notice border slam. That could ruin the holiday, or even result in missing their flight back home.

But, as per the concerns from BARA reported in other articles today, what about the tens of thousands of Australians overseas who are vaccinated but don’t have an AIR entry? The Age/SMH piece about the Apple app says ‘future updates will authenticate certificates issued by other countries’ but there is no mention of when. This is a critical dependency for avoiding overseas-vaccinated Australians being directed on arrival back here into hotel quarantine – as though they were unvaccinated – with undesirable pressure on whatever the new cap for unvaccinated arrivals turns out to be.

Yes I am worried about this for Seat Son, who had Indian made AZ in Dubai, where he lives. I would want him to be recognised as vaccinated and not have to do Hotel Quarantine when next he can come home.

The relevant page on the Services Australia site (How to add immunisations you’ve had overseas to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)) seems to offer a path to Australians overseas to get their vaccinations entered in the AIR, and thus qualify for an Australian certificate, but it can only be done from within Australia….

Oh yes, I see that Catch 22 is alive and well. If it didn't affect me personally, it would be hilarious.

Seat Son's planned August/September visit, that was cancelled due to cap reduction, was in part to address an issue like that. He had to attend a bank in person to be identified, despite already being a client of that bank, who had previously been identified! Plus he wanted to renew his Australian driving licence, but again had to do that in person because he had previously taken the "not in person" renewal option.

Agree, but I think there are enough in the first three categories to make flights financially viable.

Tourism? I think we should forget China. NZ is the next biggest after that. Other countries - agree you'd really have to *want* to come to Australia to take the risk.

It will also be limited to countries issuing "approved vaccines". I note that QF hasnt loaded any flights from SCL and Chile is using Chinese vaccines. Will they ever be recognized?

Unsure.

But the failure of NZ to eradicate their latest outbreak is actually excellent news for the Trans Tasman bubble being open and more reliable!

100% spot on. Any sort of quarantine will deter pretty much any tourist thinking about Aus.

Have you read up on HALO jumps like in Tomorrow Never Dies? You can get a flight over the "covid-infested" area and jump from 35,000 feet.

Agreed. NZ is finally starting to have a conversation about this - the Nationals laid out a plan in the style of the Doherty modelling this morning which has caused significant debate in NZ.

Give them a few days and they will assimilate just like NSW, VIC, ACT have . At least their vaccination efforts have improved.

There may well be a NSW/VIC/ACT/NZ bubble open for Christmas at this rate.

1974 and 1975 we had many trips and saw many people off. In the “old days”
everyone turned up when someone left or arrived. Ive looked at old footage from my fathers video collection with us all leaning over (able to drop anything on tarmac) and we always waved the colored hanky (as did the person on the plane) so we knew the person was in their seat.. as if they could get list between security and the plane…joys of the process
…. a contrast to today where if youre lucky someone even notices youve left the house in the taxi to the airport… let alone picks you up!!!!!

We did much the same in the early to late 70's. There was the observation deck up on the top of the International Terminal where you could wave at the aircraft. It was always a big day out. And agree on the attitude today - although I have done the one week work trip to the UK, travelling across the weekends, and it was like I had just gone up the road for the week.

No. However "losing" a few months is better than paying a significant premium for them to deal with your application faster if you are in a hurry and face the stress that they may be so overwhelmed with applications that even that won't help get your new passport in time.

If your passport is near expiry I would bite the bullet and renew it ASAP to be ready to travel if you intend to travel soon after borders reopen.

A friend renewed their passport early a month or two ago and got it back quickly as there wasn't much demand, but if that hasn't changed it'll change soon with more expecting borders to reopen.

My passport still has years left.

Some countries will require at least 6 months validity on your passport after the end of your intended stay.

2 days (or awaiting test results) might work out fine for some.

Yes they do, they are presently.
