Perth recommendation

Depends how long you are here, degree of freedom (eg. is it entirely pleasure; do you want to get outside Perth?) and what what you like to do. Happy to make some suggestions with more information.

I just realised that this is in the recommended restaurants thread.

The generally recognised best in Perth, and my personal favourites, are Jackson's in Highgate and Restaurant Amuse (degustation only) in East Perth (both close to the CBD). Also Google Must Winebar in Highgate.

However, specify what you prefer and I can be more specific.

Some of the Margaret River wineries have excellent restaurants. Most are lunch only, with some dinner on Friday-Saturday. Margaret River town is 3h drive from Perth.

Dont forget Red Cabbage in south Perth which is excellent and still good value. Saying that if you are from the eastern states you WILL be surprised that some Perth restaurants charge as if they were the best in OZ

There's enough to do in the Perth and local (i.e. 1-2hr drive) to fill at least a week, but it really depends on what you want to do, see and how flexible you are. Kings Park is nice for a walk through/around and I think is the largest inner city reserve in the world. The beaches are nice but wrong time of year, people always seem to want to go to Fremantle for fish and chips (though the local fish store is normally better) and a look around. Further out there's much more to do. York is good for a sightsee, the pinnacles and Lancelin up north and Mandurah, Bunbury and Dunsborough down south, about 1,2 and 3 hours drive respectively.

Assuming this is about restaurants, it's pretty bad in the CBD but there are pockets of better stuff as you get out.

My current top picks are Must (but it can be really noisy), Amuse (for a special occasion - once) and Jacksons (was getting a bit dated but has made a comeback). Star Anise, my previous favourite, I believe is no more.

Rockpool B&G at Burswood is pretty much a clone of the east coast ones, and just as good. It is a better price point against Perth background prices.

Greenhouse in the CBD is a little bit different. Pata Negra in Nedlands is good tapas, but thinks it is better than it is. Northbridge is adequate and inexpensive, but doesn't seem to have developed good Asian yet, it's all just OK.

And to reiterate some of the caution above: service is generally very poor, and prices are high for the mediocre.

Internet at the Centara in Bangkok is killing my ablility to reply. Not sure where the cursor has gone...

Oh, restuarants. As I read form the new posts search I don't really see the sub-forums. My girlfriend and I really like Mosmans, with decent food but the service is Perth (servicable, but no further).

Il Lido at Cottesloe beach is quite hip. A favourite of my 29 yo son and his trendy mates. The food is very good and the wine list is pretty reasonable.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Agree about the CBD, with the exception of Balthazar.

Lamont's, which used to be in East Perth and was good, has now moved to the city because of renovations at E Perth. Haven't tried it in the new location but Kate Lamont doesn't do things by halves.

How is Balthazar these days? I had a few good meals in the past, but last time I was there the service had slipped a bit (food was still good though)

I last ate there in about October or November last year and it was very good the night we went - probably the best of about three times in the last two years. Like anywhere, things can bounce around a little.

She also has something at Margaret River, which was very good.

This place is great, fairly casual (shared tables), very loud atmosphere, excellent food, and if I recall shares the same owner as Balthazar.

For simple fare we go to Osteria in Nedlands,Kailis in Leederville,Il Ciao in Applecross and then smorgasbords Hyatt Cafe and Burswood. All are casual eateries.
