People coming past the curtain to use the dunny, especially row-4 platinums.

Ok so maybe that didn't make sense - the bit I was quoting said that people who flew a lot in economy mattered more to Qantas than people who flew in business
This is absolutely correct. Airline profit is in platinums (or the equivalent at other airlines eg. Emerald oneworld) and these people are way and above the most important customers. They are typically your mid-level road warrior and consequently only get to travel in economy class. The 'business class = important customer' is not quite as valid as it first sounds.

I would have thought the number of Status credits might equate to what Qantas felt the value of one vs the other was?
That is spot on mermaid. Most FFP's now separate out points (buy, earn) vs. status credits (fly) to differentiate the most valuable customers. High points balances don't form any part of customer recognition now. It's all about your tier ie. your status credits. Given the volume of people in the programme, it's really only about the Platinums now too I think. Gold is pretty un-special these days!

While SC's may be a reasonable guide, every PAX on every Qantas flight is assigned a PCV rating.

It's a per flight rating given to each PAX. This takes into account various facets in relation to the passenger. Such facets may include but are not necessarily limited to:
  • booking class
  • FF status
  • PNR associations
  • SSRs

I know it has already been mentioned but I have not seen it written as a benefit of a business class ticket where you get exclusive use to a toilet on board the aircraft.

Here it is (from qantas.com):

Qantas Travel Classes

Domestic Business
We take all your business needs on board with extra privacy and space to relax or catch up on work.

Privacy on a plane includes keeping the other classes OUT. And Qantas promises EXTRA. And as others have mentioned it's having Y-class passengers wandering into the J cabin that's half the problem.

My next domestic QF 737 flight costs $2,345.00 in J and from $569.00 in Y (both are one-way prices). I hope the $1,776.00 difference Qantas wants is not just for the breakfast offering.

(tongue removed from cheek - although the prices on my next flight are actually correct - and I'm in J and it's a 737 :))

As a row 4 Platinum I do promise not to "wander" in the J cabin but if the isle is blocked with trolleys and the nature is calling, I will use the forward toilet. It is amazing to me that another human being would seek to hoard and covet a toilet to much. I mean get real, it is just a toilet and my use of it will not cause you any inconvenience.

I get up, walk 6 paces, open the door, do my business and return to my seat. Sorry to have trespassed into you territory and warmed the rim. I do always clean the sink and the facilities. I also promise not to talk to or make eye contact with you while I'm in your territory. ;)

Oh on the off chance that I get an opup to J and having paid a lot less than you, do you still expect me to use the rear toilet?

In exchange for the $850 I pay for a one way Business Class tiicket, I expect the Business Class cabin to be kept private. Business section and take advantage of a (privacy) product for which they or their employer refused to pay.

Where can you go for $850 one way in J?

Keep the goddam_ curtain shut and if anyone comes past it, tell them to piss off to their designated latrines. Literally. It doesn't make your product quiet, comfortable or exclusive to have the coughper engaged constantly.

And if the isle to the rear toilet is blocked by trolleys? What then? Pee on the back of your row 3 J seat or maybe into the opening between the seats? ;) You know one day you my be sitting in row 4, seeing you claim to be a WP and in need of the use of the NEAREST toilet and find no access to the rear toilet.

I have never see anyone so territorial over a toilet or allowing a fellow human being to use it. It is only a toilet.

Well today no J pax came back to my loo on the 767 to MEL.The fellow in 23J did try to go to the front loo even though a Y one 2 rows behind him.
And I noted the sign on the cabin divider-business passengers only except in an emergency-that pretty well covers it simonG.Better put it on all their planes that have 2 or more classes.

I was on two 737s over the weekend - a 400 without the divider curtain and an 800 with it. On the 400 about 3-4 people went to the forward toilet. In the 800, no one did but the strange thing was the curtain was never closed. If you close the curtain, that eliminates the opportunity.

Given the popularity of food threads I suppose it's only natural for a thread such as this to be similarly popular.

Same stuff different end. :p

Being a Canberran could I ask that we pass a motion and finish this discussion?

Maybe we can find someone to do the paperwork?

I have been in IT since it was invented. I was designing and developing 8 bit systems in my garage (not that far away from Jobs except he was into Motorola CPUs) when my day job was designing mainframes for Burroughs that took up a whole floor.

Aaaahh! Memories of the B4700 and MCP 6.5! :D

It seems to be if business class is full then they don't pull the curtain across. It only gets put across if there are empty seats in J.

Personally I don't think it is a big issue. Put generally I don't need to go on short flights.

One thing that I saw recently was a guy in 4D with his bare feet up on the arm rest of the business seat in front of him. He would have been about 18 I think his father was either a platinum or an airline employee. Surprised that the CSM, the guy in 3D or his father didn't say anything.
