Early investigations before the big launch have found that Dan Murphy's, the big-box liquor store owned by Woolworths, will look to sell the latest Penfolds Grange release at around $580 a bottle, against the recommended retail price set by Penfolds of $625 a bottle. A Dan Murphy's staff member confirmed initial pricing but added the price could change.
The recommended retail price set by Penfolds is only just that, a recommendation, and the wine group has no power to enforce a floor on the latest 2007 vintage. When the 2006 Penfolds Grange was released it had a recommended retail price of $599 a bottle, although the supermarket chains quickly fought it out to have the lowest price.
The new grange is coming out. Pricing looks like will still be $200 more then the UK.
I really dont think Grange is great value at the price.then again i at least have a few bottles of it and Hill of Grace in my cellar.
Hill of Grace is another i cant justify at today's prices.I still have fond memories of 4 of us polishing off 6 bottles of Hill of Grace at The Barn Mclaren vale after we all had passed our Physicians exam in Adelaide.Cant remember the exact cost but no more than $10 a bottle.
Heck no.In 1970 as a new doc on the block i got $40 a week......for the 120 hours i had to work. Was that in the days when $10 was a months wages?

If it's a 2006 i'd think about giving it a miss. The 2004 vintage has a much nicer character, the 2006 seems a bit more savoury than previous vintages myself and some colleagues are skeptical about its cellaring potential past 7 or 8 years time. If you can get a reasonably cheap 04 or 03.
Up to you though of course, its a little hard to tell with Granges and what kind of prices they can fetch in the future
Of course the last time Dan murphys and first choice tried to significantly discount penfolds (either grange or St Henri or bin 389) penfolds sent people out to the shops (possibly just in adelaide) and purchased all the stock available. Also making a neat profit into the bargain by some reports.

I agree with you.Does anyone else think Grange is incredibly over-rated, or is it just me?
Grange is Penfolds most valuable produce it makes them 35 million a year a production of about 59000 bottles Rockfords basket press is $60 per bottle and can match Grange any day , as for Hill of Grace, well that's over priced but they produce a lot smaller than Grange. It's hard to justify the price when other great wines of the world may only produce 1000 cases and are priced at a similar price point
If this message makes no sence the it's because I was up all night working
I agree with you.
But my 71s and 76s cost no where near the current price. And as for the Hill Of Grace-used to be cheap.I'd agree with you too....until you drink the '53 or the '71 or the '76 or the........![]()

Hill of Grace is a single vineyards wine from a vineyard that's over 150 years old (I live on the property between Henschkes Mt Edelstone and Hill of Grace vineyards)....the market dictates the price for all of these wines and the reason certain wines attain a higher price is they have pedigree.
Remember....as good as Rockfords BP is...and I love the wine....it has only been around since the late 1980's.
