Passport Renewal query

I have never been without a usable passport for over 40 years now.
If there's no planned travel I'd defer the passport renewal.

My first passport expired August 2000 and company paid for new passport in March 2003 otherwise I had no planned travel for God knows how long.

It’s the unplanned stuff in life that gets ya! You can control having a valid passport for immediate travel especially if you have family living overseas.

Renew now, fill those Government coffers, and receive the wonderful abridged 34 page passport. Seven months in 13 pages down, must thank the bureaucrat who worked out by cutting the larger passports out they could earn more money......

Ah yes, however the preponderance of e-passports and passport controls to accomodate them means fewer stamps these days.

If there's a reasonable likelihood of needing to jet off with less than 10 days notice between now and your next planned travel, then renew now. Otherwise, renew closer to the time of your planned trip.

My wife's passport had expired for two years when renewed. It was a very easy process.

Ive got a June expiry next year so looking to renew now, and got no overseas trips planned over Xmas.
Did the online form and printed the now single page to take to AusPost which basically only needs a signature and the photo (Im surprised that they dont get AP to submit the photo electronically these days as well)

The form states a fee of $282 valid to 16-Jan.. Is that correct or will it rise if I dont lodge form until after 1-Jan.

I think fees normally rise with the budget in mid year.

This morn I commenced Passport Renewal process and I get message that only 32 page Standard Passports are now issued - have they done away with the 64 page Frequent Traveller Passports?

(Mods is there no separate thread of general Passport renewal queries)

Yes - but you can now Replace a full passport for just $184 if you fill it up before your 10 years is up...
Correct + $293 to get the first 32 pager - then after it's full you need reapply and you haven't a Passport for 3 weeks - how does dropping from 66 pages back to 32 make any sense?

Oh wait - the Public Service - severe allergy to common sense huh?

I’m with you. Just renewed mine. Based on the time it took to fill 2 double sized passports I’ll be renewing every 2.5 years now.

Noting that stamping in and out of many counties including Aus is reducing rapidly so there may be some rationale (on top of more revenue from the true 64-page requirers).

The actual decision has nothing to do with the Public Service. It is a political decsion to raise revenue and is subsequently properly administered by the Government department tasked to issue passports.

Ask the minister why they chose to raise the price by reducing the quantity of pages. They're ultimately responsible.

Replace it. Annoying process, but replacing it is cheaper than renewing it.
