Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Rebus I went to Aust Post, paid for the new photos, got a digital copy as well as some real ones.

You had to send old UK passport and photocopy of current Aust Passport...EVERY page!! Which annoyed me as it was brand new unused and empty, the data page would be fair enough. I cut the pages in half to Passport size to save weight and size so there was no "blank" paper

They sent the old UK passport back to me with corner cut off...and my blank Aust photocopies.

I dont live in a Capital city...dont know why guy above just had to show his and not send it to England??
Hi @jastel I missed the bit about another/UK passport in question 2- need to get my eyes checked!

I was relating my experience with the renewal of Australian passports only, a much easier process.

Thanks jastel. That's what I was hoping to hear with regards to the Australian passport. I would not be comfortable without having access to at least one passport in case I had to make an unexpected trip back to the UK.

OK -

Frequent Flyer - I was getting mad wondering why I had to send a copy of my Aust Passport to get a UK Passport and you didn't...I did renew my Aust one as well just prior to that and I was effectively sending them 30 blank pages. My Aust one was as easy as you said but a bit longer for regional postage. It wasn't cut up or anything either...but it was 3 years expired.

Rebus - I emailed the renewal form so must have used the digital copy of the picture, then posted the Aust Passport copies and old UK Passport, in about 2 days I kept getting emails from Home Office UK saying "We have not received your Documents" nearly daily...the post (used a Registered satchel thing for about $30 I think) took about 2 weeks to get over there naturally. Once it arrived, got an "arrival" email, it was approved pretty quick and then sent back to me via DHL Courier within a week...the old Passport, with corner cut off, and Aust copies came later.

Thanks jastel, I appreciate the information. That sounds like a pretty good result given that the UK Passport Office has been dealing with a lot of industrial action by staff.

I know he can still use it, just thought that seeing as the new R series started in Sep 2022 that we might have used up the first 6 months supply and have gone to a reprint with an update to the new King.
Then again, on my recent UK trip most places and even the guards uniforms were still ER II.
And it would be kinda cool to have one of the new King passports I think.

So renewal times are back to normal now?
I'll have to renew my passport early next year.

When I got my current passport, I paid for the express handling (I was renewing it in a 6 week period between trips), then didn't get the express service because they wanted more paperwork (I was also doing a name change). A few days after going back to the post office to fax the extra paperwork to the passport office, I got a message saying the passport was ready and I went to the passport office to collect it.

Too many people in Dandenong left renewal so late that its clogged up the local PO? Now everyone expects a renewal, pronto. Just a thought. 🤷‍♂️

And welcome to AFF. Hope that you stay around.

Log a missing parcel request, it might get it moving.

Just renewing mine now as I fall foul of the 6 month rule on one of my upcoming trips (by 2 days...!), plus I only have 2 pages left anyway. Firstly, I'm astonished at the further increased costs in the UK, but secondly, there is no speedy processing option anymore. Only seems to be an option for an emergency passport, which comes with 4 pages. Now, it's been 4 years since I last had to renew mine (I go through them too quickly.....) but I'm sure that option was there last time and in fact I had to use it as I had a trip that I needed to do.

Currently quoting 6-8 weeks for renewal from the UK. Can only post it in, can't drop off at the embassy so that adds further delays.

However, on here.. (Where to apply for your passport) while it says you CAN lodge via post for renewals, it says all others can be done in person. Can you do a renwal in person too if you book an appointment? There's one available tomorrow morning if so.

I wasn't expecting such long renewal times as in the past it's only taken 1-2 weeks from the UK but didn't even think to check, so it's caught me out slightly.

Should get a move along with getting my UK passport and have it on a staggered date so I don't have to worry about this in the future........

At what point can I keep using my current one? Till the new one is issued? Could be risky if that's the case and I'm mid-trip while it is issued.

Update: according to Passport FAQs the old passport can be used up to 30 days after your new one has been issued, if applying by post.
