Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Adding a recent datapoint. Standard adult renewal. Did not pay priority.

Fri 6/1/23: Lodged at Aus Post in Melbourne CBD. Warned that it might take "6 to 8 weeks".
Mon 9/1/23: Status changed to "Under Assessment" on the portal.
Wed 18/1/23: Notification that it had been dispatched.
Thu 19/1/23: Delivered.

So just under two weeks in total. 7 working days for the actual processing of the application.

Received the new R series. It's nice. Photo a shocker but that's not exactly their fault...

Yeah, I probably went a bit too early tbh, but after the horror stories from last year thought it was better to just get it done now to be safe. I figure even if you lose a bit of time on each renewal it's probably not going to increase the total number of passports you get during your life!

Depends where you are going. You don't need 6 months validity to return to Australia on an Australian passport, but you may need 6 months validity to enter your destination. You'll have to check with them.

Who has received a passport renewal notice recently? I did today. My initial reaction is it is a bit cheeky. We have not been allowed to travel, yes I know essential services travelers can, for 12 months now, and we know we cannot fly before 21 June 2021. I know it pays to be prepared but as I was reading the email I was waiting for the offer "Renew before your passport expires to receive a discount".

We could be another 12 months away from travel with the government admitting the vaccine rollout could run into 2022.

Who is allowing their passport to go fallow whilst they wait for confirmation of dates for commencement of international travel?

I got mine. It was renewed fast I got it in a week. I called rather than internet. It’s my last passport at 70. Get your passports and the travel bug will come again.
You just never know what’s round the corner, be prepared.

Renewed mine...a simple renewal so easy as...filled out forms on internet printed and took to Post Office and submitted after getting them to do new pictures.
4 days for email saying approved...another 10 for post to my house...about normal for here, there was a major flood event in Central Qld may have delayed the mail a day or two?
R series but still mentions the Queen.

Very Happy with service, cost...not so much, now doing UK one and only half Aust price.

By the way travel insurance for a 91 yr old is about $2,000 with health issues declared

Good to hear turnaround times have reduced significantly, I have to apply for 2 kids passport (brand new, no renewal). Are turnaround time for kids similar to adults? Nothing extra that might delay them if anyone knows?

I think they look harder at first passports for anyone but especially for kids, because of who has legal custody etc so it will take longer.

24 Jan: Lodged application at Sydney GPO (standard service)
25 Jan: Status on portal updated to Lodged
27 Jan: Status on portal updated to Under assessment
02 Feb: Received email advising ready for pickup at Sydney Passport Office

Picked passport up from Sydney Passport Office this afternoon around lunchtime. No queues and only took a couple of minutes. Received R series.

Bit over a week for standard service including a public holiday. Not bad at all!

My grandfather got his passport a few days ago. So a very fast turnaround.

For me, ten days from lodging application with local post office to receiving new passport by registered mail. This was for an adult renewal.

I am an Australian in the US currently and need to rebook my return to Brisbane (currently 5 April) because I am caring for very sick relatives here. My Australian passport expires on 1 Nov 2023. Am I going to be permitted to board the LAX-AKL-BNE flights if I depart LAX sometime in June?

Friends are telling me that of course I can enter Australia, but that some airlines will stop me boarding the flights home because I might have only 4 or 5 months left before my passport expires. My experience is that one cannot *enter* a foreign destination with less than 6 months to expiry, not that you can’t fly home with less than 6 months on your passport. I can’t get past “Oscar the Chatbot” on the Air NZ Messenger thread to get to a human who can answer me. Can anyone please confirm either way? Many thanks in advance. Laurie

Yes this would be fine.

Before you travel to New Zealand

To board your flight or cruise to New Zealand you need a valid passport or travel document, and have the right visa or an NZeTA.

In the case of New Zealand and Australian passport holders or New Zealand residents/Australian permanent residents (with current travel conditions), your passport must be valid for enough time to allow you to travel to New Zealand. The passport must be valid on the date you are entering/leaving New Zealand.

Do I need six months validity left on my passport before I can travel from and then re enter Australia?​

Your passport is valid from the date it is issued until the date it expires. You can use it throughout this period, subject to meeting the visa and immigration requirements of the countries you wish to visit or transit.
