I never thought I'd ask this question!

I've flown into tulla too may times, but I've always got a cab or got a hire car.

On Monday I flt into Tulla on QF and need to tell someone where to collect me at the airport in a drive by collection area - where do I tell them?

Is it near the cab rank, or near the hilton? Or where?

thanks for any help.

Arrivals is clearly marked approaching.. and it's past the Hilton area.

Qantas end...right at the end.

You walk out to the centre island and then turn left..

Note that it is only for pick up...and so your car driver should not park there.

Have your driver in transit and ring them once you land/have picked up bags etc.

Ground level, the 2nd road out from the terminals (i.e. not the one that runs directly adjacent to the terminals - sorry, unsure how it is signposted), where all the off-airport parking shuttles pick people up, go most of the way to the end, I think just past Zone 6 in front of T1 (QF domestic terminal), there is a pickup area there (at the end).

If you satellite view Tulla on google maps you can see the zones, a couple of buses waiting, with 4 cars parked in front of them at the end of the pickup zone.

Note that it's up to 150 metre walk from the exit of Qantas arrivals. You have to use the pedestrian crossing and walk up 100 metres to get there.

Also, the location fits about 4 cars - I think it's signposted as 2 minute parking.

I don't use it as there's rarely a spare spot. I simply call the person picking me up via Mobile 'phone and head out, wait for them to come past the pedestrian crossing and jump in.

It's made deliberately difficult as the Airport owners want you to pay the $12 for the first hour to collect. (Melbourne Airport parking sting exposed | Herald Sun)

The other tip - if arriving after 9pm, when there are no flights left departing domestically - is to arrange pickup on the departures level outside the Jetstar checkin area. I haven't seen anyone being hassled by airport officers late in the evening there. Wouldn't do it near international though.

Can anyone advise where the pickup area is if flying Virgin?

I think you'll need to walk to the area described in the posts above, as per the second paragraph in this link. Really only 5 minutes or so.

There does not appear to any other pickup zone (that I can find, anyway). They seem quite keen for people to park a while and pay (and given the massive profits parking brings them, I can see why).

I think it's at the very opposite end of that row (furthest south possible).

AFAIK that pickup area consists of a single 1 minute park.

A couple of years ago while diligently waiting at that spot (occupied for some time by a waiting car) after a transpac, I was approached by a parking *ahem* revenue raising officer and warned that my pickup would be fined if they parked in the bus zone adjacent to it. I asked her if she wouldn't mind passing that sentiment on to the person outrageously extending their park beyond the 1 minute in the sole legal pickup park - and was basically told to mind my own business. Sure enough, the spot was still occupied as my ride arrived, so they pulled over in the empty bus zone just passed the pedestrian crossing. Despite running to the car and throwing my suitcase into the boot, my friendly revenue raiser ran after me, writing threatening notes on her pad.

I'll never know whether it resulted in a fine as I had to share a piece of my mind and the person driving me did me the courtesy of never mentioning it again. Since then, I've either paid the $3 rort for transiting through the car park or chanced my luck at the QF end, or simply on the road/crossing like you.

Unsurprised to read about the ACCC's latest dummy spit about the protected monopoly at the airport, but as usual they'll vent their spleen and achieve nothing while we continue to be held to ransom by them.

I was talking to my driver a while back as there was a spate where they were being "booked". There is no enforcement to pay the fines (in Melbourne at least) as none of them paid and it was dropped.

FWIW, when it's raining I get my collector to use the rental returns lane and I get picked up underneath the Hilton (soon to be Park Royal). ;)

Picked up a passenger this afternoon, a bleeding nightmare with the changes. No signage or anyone about so I stopped in the bus lane, couldn't even see the disabled pickup points. Rang hubby and he could see me so came to me. Not long home and have checked the map on the internet. Disabled Pickup is now at each end and they state the signage is being redone .... yeah really helpful for non city people. They are pushing every one else through the car park and charging. What a rip off. Not much help when you are trying to drive, watch signs, pedestrians etc. Ah well at least I now know where to tell family to stand in 10 days time for the next pick up.

Sorry to sound like a naysayer but I totally disagree. My wife picks me up most Fridays a rush hour at MEL and since the changes for pick up and delivery, we have found it so much easier. Also, the car parks are free for first 15 or 20 minutes now, so if on VA, use the park near the tiger building and circuit in and out, if on QF, you can do the same in the main parking building.
MEL has actually become proactive in trying to fix the traffic issues and so far so good.

Careful a lot of the advice in here is out of date. The pick up point that used to exist with only a couple of bays toward the far McDonalds end doesn't exist any more. There is now a new larger public pick up point in front of the Park Royal, it is well signed from a passenger point of view. There are approximately 20 car bays here meaning people can wait a bit longer before being asked to moved on. The new system does at times create a longer queue/bottleneck to get in to the area but seems to work ok.

I'm so glad you replied because that's what I wanted. We are from the country and only go to Tulla maybe 3 times a year if lucky. Can you explain what we do now for both International and domestic pickup? I know where the entrance to the car par is but is there a pickup point there or what and where is the exit that we don't pay. I'm the one driving and I'm the one with the disbility so I am legally allowed to pickup in the disabled section but it would be less chaotic I think in the parking area. The maps and instructions on the website leave a lot to be desired and I'm a firm believer in word of mouth advice.

Many thanks Joan

Is it easy to find coming from the main road, I nearly got wiped out yesterday by a speeding driver. Do you go into the carpark or take the hotel entrance? I need to know these things before I get there because if the chaos. It's very daunting when you aren't used to traffic like I am.

Joan

I can see the sense and think it is a better arrangement than juggling with buses but never saw a sign to tell me anything. Word of mouth is better anyway and seeing we have to collect our son in 10 days your advice would be great.
