Just having a look at booking a classic award on CX metal from BNE-HKG-LAX in J with a 2 night stopover in HKG. The QF website calculates this at 169k pts but using their partner classic awards table the distance (11,583mi) it looks like it should be 139k pts. Can anyone confirm the correct figure and if it is the lower can I have this booked over the phone for this amount? Will the phone booking fee be waived in this instance?

Also, if I were to book each leg separately online (would be circa 170k pts) to ensure I get a seat as soon as they become available will I be able to have the flights joined into the one booking and have the points cost adjusted?
Thanks

The two-night stopover is your problem, that makes it price as two separate awards, 65,000 + 104,000 = 169,000.

Vinomofo is the best wine deals site on the planet. Good wines, real people and epic deals, without all the bowties and bs.

Ahh ok. So 169k is correct with the stopover? Will it be the lower figure with a 1 day stopover or do I need to have it as a same day connection?

Sorry, that might be illegible. But 139,000 + AUD360.46 with a transit under 24 hours.

Just following on from this, I will be booking this itinerary in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking of booking the BNE-HKG leg arriving HKG circa 6pm and then a HKG-LAX leg departing HKG circa 1pm the following day (19hr layover) in two seperate bookings the day each becomes available.

This will cost 169k pts for the two individual bookings. If I call QF and ask to join the two bookings will they recalculate the cost to the 139k pts it would have cost of done in one go?

EDIT: Additional question: Would QF be able to join the two bookings and adjust the points cost even if the two individual flights were not able to be selected together in a multi city booking?

EG I can't seem to get the 13:05 HKG-LAX (CX884) on a multi-city booking even when there is availability as an individual award booking.

they may be able to assist you by phone, but you may have to pay the fees.

I had a similar multi-city booking that gave me both sectors, but not a through booking. However - that was a QF website issue (and an immediate connection). As this was a QF issue they waived the fees. You'll have to play it by ear.

Well in that case the online booking engine appears to be incorrectly evaluating a next day transit on not more than 24 hours as a stopover - I'd suggest as per MEL_Traveler's advice and call - the fee should be waived as it is a incorrectness on behalf of the booking engine.

Good question!

I recently booked CX J BNE-HKG-FCO (GCM = 10,084mi) with a three day stopover in HKG for 143,000 QFFP. My original booking was a 6hr transit in HKG which was also 143,000 QFFP. So FCO route cops a 4K point penalty whilst LAX gets slugged with 30K :shock:

Looks like QFF have devised a cunning way of penalising members that want to fly to LAX with CX or OW partners in general. FWIW I couldn't source BNE-FCO .... had to book via multi-city which immediately pockets QFF with additional points......very sneaky!

The table quotes;
109,601-15,00075,000112,500139,000203,000

I'm about to book the return flights CX FRA-HKG-BNE (no stopover) .... might give QFF a call and see what gives.

those figures actually work out for the combination of sector fares. HKG-FCO is shorter than HKG-LAX (LAX is 2 zones higher than FCO).

Thanks Serfty and others for your help.
One last question, is there a different points calculation if I'm on the QF flight to HKG? So BNE-HKG on QF in J arriving early evening and then HKG-LAX in J on CX departing the next day just after lunch.

I don't know if this is a similar problem with RTW bookings on CX and booking same day connections.
CX doesn't allow same day transit when doing reward bookings.

It can't be on the same ticket for same day transit.
You will have to make two separate bookings or do a stop-over, same amount of points.

It's the same if you make an Asiamiles booking, it is counted as two separate tickets in terms of points.

If you're are going to make a return award booking to Europe or the US and the combined totals of points come close to 140k in Y or 280k in J you should probably do it as a One World award, which will allow you 35,000 miles (so probably another trip to Asia/NZ etc or somewhere aside from your main trip) and a total of 5 stopovers if you want them...

So just to clarify, if you stopover more than 24 hours on a Partner Award ticket then the points are calculated as individual segments? This seems to be what Qantas is telling me.

That would be correct - it would be classed as a stopover, and hence priced as a series of 'trips'.

Definition of 'trip' is:

Definition of "Trip" with effect from 1 September 2013
Note: The above definition of "Trip" will be effective until 31 August 2013. Please see below for the new definition of "Trip" that will be effective from 1 September 2013.

"Trip" means a series of one or more consecutive Flight Segments within an Itinerary:
(a) that does not include:
(i) a Stopover; or
(ii) a Flight Segment whose arrival city is the same as the departure city of any other Flight Segment in that series (in this instance the Trip will be broken at the farthest point from the departure city for that series);
(b) not exceeding the maximum permitted miles in the Qantas, Jetstar or Partner Classic Flight Reward tables as applicable (see qantas.com for the tables); and
(c) not broken by a change to or from any airline included in the Partner Classic Flight Reward table (see qantas.com for the table)
