My 15 year old is on an overseas school trip later this year, and on the return leg, is leaving the tour to join us for a holiday. The travel insurance his school provides ends of course when he leaves their tour, and I'm struggling to find travel insurance that will just cover him from the moment he leaves the school tour until he returns to Australia with us a few weeks later.

I'm trying to avoid having to take out cover for him that starts from the moment he leaves Australia with the school tour, as he is already covered by the school for the first (extended) part of his trip.

I've spoken to a few travel insurers, and they will only cover him from the date he leaves Australia.

Any ideas of insurers who might provide the sort of one-way cover I'm looking for?

Have you spoken to the insurer being used by the school and seeing if you can extend the cover until your child returns home?

I would imagine there would be several students who would be in the same situation.

I've never heard of travel insurance starting whilst the insured part is overseas.

Thanks, I've asked that question of the school but for various reasons, I'm not confident of getting anywhere with that

Sorry, but can't offer any other advice from what's already been posted. However, that's weird about policy start date. I take out coverage for myself as soon as I commit money (e.g., the fares, hotels) should I suffer an injury or other medical that would prevent me from starting the trip. Otherwise, fares, hotels payments may be gone unless refundable/cancellable.

Edit: I should mention that I take out annual multi-trip insurance, but that's not what you are after

Sorry, don't have any personal experiences but thought it's an interesting topic. I googled "travel insurance while overseas" and a few providers popped up. They are for people that forgot to get travel insurance and are already overseas and some policies had first 48 hours not covered while others had first 72 hours not covered.

Haven't really looked into the T&Cs (which I guess is a must for insurance!) but perhaps something like that will work for your case? Purchase the insurance while your son is overseas and then have it "start" a few days before you want the cover to begin?

I hadn't thought of that - interesting angle - will give it some thought - thanks

Did you ever find anything? I often extend work trips. Work covers (self-insures) for anything/everything during the work part but less clear is whether this extends to the personal part. I've asked - there is a lack of clarity. Thus, looking into the "better safe than sorry" options. One option is an annual policy, but I'm wondering if a part trip policy is also possible.

I really didn't get anywhere with a part trip policy, so it was either a) an annual policy or b) a policy that extended from the date you left Oz until the date you return --- I'm waiting to hear from the school's insurer whether they'll extend my son's cover, but my back-up is taking out a policy for option a) or b) [not much i can do about it, unless i want to risk him having no cover for his holiday with us!]

Probably not worth the risk - who wants to worry while on holiday (that's where I always end up)

Yes that's what I figure - I think it will be roughly $300+ - but that's probably what I will end up doing, as no point taking a risk of being uncovered

As others have said there are companies that will insure Australian citizens who are already overseas. I needed this once when I suddenly remembers, while already in the States, that I hadn't activated my credit card insurance :( The costs were actualy very reasonable. IIRC there was an initial waiting period, however this was waived for accident and emergency (which is fair enough I think).

I think that's right, but my understanding is that they'll want to date the insurance from when you left Australia - that's what was slightly tricky for my son, as he is overseas for a few months before joining us - however, that's what I'll be doing, unless the school's insurer agrees to extend the cover (for a fee of course) for our shortish holiday at the end of his trip

NO. Mine was just the date from when I actually applied, which granted was only the day or two after i left Australia. This was a few years ago now and I was just trying to search who I got the policy through, but I don't seem to be able to find it.

Thanks, if u happen to recall it, that'd be great!!

I just found it. Insure4less. Can't guarantee their terms and condtions haven't changed since a few years ago. It might be that they now require you to cover the entire time since you left Australia, but they didn't at the time.
