After so many years as QF WP, i have decided this is it. this is the year i go for the P1. And before i get told off for chasing non existent upgrades, non existent recognition, non existent welcome gifts or game tickets, I just want it to see for myself. ;)

My membership year ends up in March and i will be requal for this year. So to do it as early as possible to take me to march 2022.

My options - i do 20 or so qantas returns BNE - SYD a year which i am usually booked in flex eco. As a QF Business level 2 rewards member that works out to approx $900 return a ticket for 40SC. However DSC takes me to 80 so i will only book 10 but 800 credits for 9k does not seem like good value at all. i usually clock 2000 SC a year with long haul J tickets to Europe / USA

Now. Im happy to do a status run domestically departing SYD. or long haul to anywhere but Bali. Im trying to keep this cost effective as possible. That way i can just use points for the bne - syd runs

what do you guys think?
I have a queenstown trip coming up 13-15 march but a business ticket there is coming to approx 2300 for only 340 credits.....

Happy to shout a case of wine to whoever is the most creative!! Can it be done for 7-10k???????
Qantas and most of you must be laughing at me happy to spend this cash for a white card but lets do it!!

I might be but i want it levelnine. Im based out of syd. i miss those syd-bne-tsv stories i read here. Never done a status run but looking forward to the creative options!!!

Good luck and make sure you post your experiences in the P1 thread! I did a few runs to get to P1 and ended up having work travel take me beyond 4,000 SCs (and just barely being able to gift WP). Avoiding Bali the options I’ve seen in the other threads tend to involve AKL or WLG.

I didn’t have any creative routings of my own, in the days of JASAs I did a couple of KTA runs and more recently DRW...

I could easily sit on the seat all weekend long around australia in domestic J. get work done on board no issue. but pricing this tickets multi city on website never works for me. been trying all day . Im sure the turn around in akl would be easy enough.
It is a challenge!!!

and i will def post all my experiences in that forum for sure !

No offence but I think this is insane.

P1 is NOT worth chasing. But you expected that comment :)

so I would say

1. Use DSC in April to maximise sttaus earn ie if you did manage to earn P1 by say June or July you would have most of two years of the white.
2. If you WANTED P1 you'd honestly have to do either a crazy load of J domestic flights at huge cost, 10+ CGK turns (prob in paid J) or more trans-tas runs.

If you do enough regular paid flying to get to WP we'll assume that's 1200-1400 accounted for, so you'd need to then find 2000ish additional, or 1000 SC of paid QF flying under DSC conditions - two RT F SYD-LAX would do it, or a creative SYD-LHR F r/t would do it.. but you want to be cheap.... A good SC return on QF metal other than CGK above can be had with MEL-SYD-OOL usually around $750 one way for 80 SC so 160 r/t and I also like MEL-BNE-CNS/TSV (120 one way/240 R/T) but even then you'd be looking at at LEAST 4 of those. You'd need much more if doing paid Y trips obviously, even Flex.

You could do things like AY J fares ensuring QF sectors for as much as possible, but even then your options are limited in terms of QF flights, and assuming you have the time and desire and $$ to go to europe or RTW.

If you want to know what it's like to attain P1 this way I suggest taking at least $10k to the racetrack, spending some at the bar and putting the rest on a nag that comes 4th, so you have a buzz but ultimately disappointment and a bank account that is much lower than it was.

DSC makes it easier for sure to attain P1 but it only really makes sense if you're doing a lot more regular flying than for WP. Otherwise you'll be spending a lot more money than you want on this.

IMO.

Even with DSC you are not going to earn "flying all weekend long around australia in domestic J" even doing things like BNE-SYD-ADL-MEL-PER-BNE-CNS-DRW-SYD-PER-SYD" or whatever (I just made that up as crazy example). It requires a hell of a lot more flying and bum in seat (BIS) time to make P1.

I think there was someone a few years ago who did something like 14 trans-tasman EK F sectors to do it? ( back when QF codeshares on EK counted)....

i might be insane, but two years with the white I'm willing to risk my mental health.
so we need 1800 status credits of normal earn. as the bonus ones don't qualify towards the P1. if i end up changing not only dates but destinations on these tickets ands pay the extra if ticket prices go up does the PNR stay and allow me to earn the DSC?

Not too sure what you mean here.

Bonus SC, as in the double SC promo, DO qualify towards attaining any status level, including P1.

However they do NOT apply to the "Bonus Rewards" such as Loyalty Bonuses at 500/1000/1500/2000 SC, nor the PBR at 2400 SC or the P1 BR's at 5000 and 7500 SC.

While I suppose 1800 SC earned al with DSC would get one there you can also have 900 SC's of partner earn on other airlines (like BA, AA etc) to help qualify.

In terms of changing dates and the like - that should be no problem if you booked tickets to LAX for example today and then changed the dates, as long as the new flights stayed within the promotion period.

However changing destinations I think would require reticketing and thus a new PNR created (though a good TA may be able to do it within the same PNR).

Sorry for the confusion. what i meant was the bonus status credits earnt per 500sc earn, do they count for attainment of p1?

No. they do not.

They count towards all other status levels but not P1.

Thanks Richard. so it is 1800 credits under the DSC if earning all on QF with the promo.....

Many have chased it, myself included in 2014. I had a reasonably good run of a year at the P1 level, only one international trip and I was upgraded on 1 of my 4 flights. Domestically I was upgraded closer to 50% of the time, but I hear P1's these days need to dial down their expectations. Also received a nice bottle of red for christmas that's still in my cellar, and attended a few events – do they still offer the flight sim?

I think like many things, it was fun in the old days, when it was first a thing. Perhaps less so now?

Should you do it? If you want to I see no reason not to enable you :p

1800SC can easily be done for $7k (thanks for the case of wine: I'll take a dozen Grosset Gaia thanks).

If you have the spare cash then sure go for it as a laugh. I do *guarantee* you will not get your money's worth as a P1. You really won't.

$7k seems very very good value. I think it would cost a little more., but I'm not as creative as some :D

Indulge a little and do it in one trip flying F to London and back. If you bookend it with dom sectors that should get you 1,840SC. You can get these for under $10k when the specials are on.

I don’t have time for the specials ! It has to be ticketed before tomorrow night !!!

I think I know what you are referring to and there’s a few posts saying it’s not bulletproof ??? Is there one available now ? I doubt it :(
