Overview of Best Qantas Status Run Options [not the discussion thread]

MEL-SYD-ASP return used to be 48,000 + $367 just a couple of months ago.
Now its more like 48,000 + $2,523 lol the cash fare is $2,860 lol this is beyond a joke.

That's why we have to think and look again rather than rely on the past deals.

Sort of sums up why they changed it.

Just like Citi, Amex, EDR, Westfield, Westpac have all changed their respective models in recent months.

Yeh but seven-fold ?
Do you know any company in any industry that have put their prices up SEVEN-FOLD overnight ?
I don't.

It would be like cinemas tickets selling for $100 or Ford starting their cars at $90k or the cost of 60c stamps jumping up to $4.20 or a Big Mac going for $28.
Just doesn't happen. Not in one go. And not overnight.

And there is a reason it doesn't happen. Because companies generally want to grow their customer base, not obliterate it.

Depends how you look at it.

Prices for J fares haven't increased - in fact they've fallen.

Loyalty reward points aren't cash sales!

Various routes involving comnections have had some pretty steep price adjustments in the last year.

"Adjustments" lol you are being too kind.
I think the term skyrocketed would be more fitting lol.

Did they think their customers would not notice ?
Do they even know/care about what value competing airlines place on their FF points ? Do they know how poorly their QFF program compares (even before this recent "adjustment") ?

Are those figures from the website or the MASA desk? There would be a large increase if you are just using the website as it does not show the ASAs at classic level.

Classic awards are pretty easy to re-deem.....particularly on CX.

The website but using the slider and placing it at the points value where the JASA value used to be.
I thought that by calling all that would do is enable you to book ASAs at the same price as Classics ?

The slider should allow you to go to 5000 points as the base regardless, at least for Y, calling is the only way to get the cheaper ASAs based on the award class availability, such as the 48000 TSV DRW. Your earlier post is not correct when you talk about 7x fares, your just not looking in the right places, two years ago the TSV-DRW was 30K, its now 48000, thats nowhere near 2x, but is still a significant cost increase.

So you're saying that even though for a Classic Award online for points plus pay it is 48,000 + $2,500 but by simply calling I can get this fare down to what it previously was in points and $$ as a JASA and then earn points and SCs on this substantially cheaper fare c.f. a Classic Award booked online ?

Sounds too good to be true... and it means that the people that do not visit forums such as this one or read the fine print and do not know about having to call up are probably getting completely shafted.

If you did read the conditions in the email, it did say the following:

Please note that from 26 June 2013 Any Seat Award bookings made in reservation classes X, Z, U or P cannot be made online at qantas.com. To make an Any Seat Award booking in these classes please call 1300 366 587 (dial in +61 2 8222 2430 from outside Australia) between the hours of 0900 and 1700 AEST on Mondays to Fridays. In most cases the points required for Any Seat Awards booked in these classes are higher than those required for a Classic Award in the same class of travel on the same flight. See qantas.com for more information and full terms and conditions

So if you find availability of a classic award online by selecting 'Show Classic Awards Only', that should mean the 'cheap' ASAs will also be available.

Why does it sound too good to be true, its what Qantas said was happening and reflects what our members are reporting :)

Ahhhhhhhhh ok. Yeh I wasn't checking that box which said "Show Classic Awards Only". Hmmmmm okay that looks better. Thanks all.

That's one point of view.
Another is that no sane person would spend points on overpriced ASA's.
They will continue to book Classic Awards or redeem their points on upgrades or toasters.
For the next 3 months or so a tiny minority of FF will redeem those points at Classic Award levels via the phone gaining SC and points. An even tinier minority will use that time to book ASA's as Status Runs via the phone.
At the end of the phone booking period order will be restored to our world. That is the game that QF loyalty are playing and we are the pawns.

I just did a search for CFS-SYD-CFS in August. For the same number of points (16,000) the cash component for the YASA was $40 cheaper than the Classic; go figure.....

Not complaining mind you. JV

I quoted up a BNE-HKG as a classic and as a JASA recently post-changes and the JASA was $5 cheaper than the classic. It's not that unusual.

I just booked a TSV-BNE-DRW JASA return for April next year and the all point cost came to 91,173points, inclusive of taxes and surcharges. The classic award cost is 100,000 plus a co payment of $173.49...

Booked this one today (all points, $0):
Sydney
SYD-xBNE-TSV = 100 SC for 43186 points or 432 points/SC (day return possible)
