I'm hoping you hired a car from Christchurch (with bonus points!) and drove Mrs LW to Milford Sound... if not, grab a flight to Queenstown next Autumn, stay at a hotel on the lake, take the TSS Earnslaw over to Walter Peak for an amazing dinner and then a tour to Milford Sound. It sure beats BNE in April!

Lindsay,

You'll love Prague... not the airport, but the city. It's crowded with hordes of European tourists, but the architecture is fantastic. Highly recommended sights are Prague Castle, the Jewish Quarter, and Charles Bridge at dawn.

If you're after some literature set in Prague, can recommend 'Austerlitz' (about a man who realises he was born in Prague, and sent to safety in the UK during WWII), and 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay' (two teenage Jewish cartoonists in NY and Prague, also set in WWII).

The food, on the other hand, is nothing to write home about. I had never heard of (let alone tried) lard dumpings before I went there, and there is probably a good reason for this.

One place you cannot miss in Prague is cafe 'U Fleku' where you find the one of the best dark Czech style lagers made (it is technically a Dunkel) called Flekovsky Tmavy Lezák.

It is situated in Kremencova 9.

I disagree about the food. A lot of it is admitterdly heavy but the goulash style from Hungary and lighter Austrian styles are also available and are quite good.

But you are going to love the beer. Staropramen on the streets with a sausage on a roll, Pilsner Urquell everywhere, and really for the most religious of moments go to the town of Pilsen about 70km away where you will find the birthplace of that esteemed style of beer.

Oh yeah, there are some churches, Charles bridge and 'Fred and Ginger'.

Sorry guys, in my excitement included Australian airports in the list. Must have been in anticpation of the politicians finally getting there act together and ratifying a common border for Australia/New Zealand

Lindsay just returned from trip to Prague, great city and extremely cheap even compared to Australia, a pint of Pilsner Urquell can be had for AU$1. Didn't really find any great culinary highlights in the Czech Republic but the pubs are great. If you have an interest in opera or theatre they put on some great productions which are also relatively cheap.

OK off now to try work out how many different airlines I have flown.

I'll be adding Queenstown on Sat 25 Sept (QF253) when we go there for a skiing week with very close friends (we are sharing our 1st wedding anniversary together). Never been to Milford Sound, but stayed in Wanaka and visited Queenstown (by car!!) 15 years ago (so couldn't add Queenstown to my list, I visited Wellington as well on the same trip, but alas not by flying)...

Indeed I can imagine what it's like in Ipswich, I used to live at Moggill. Spare a thought for me living near the Airport, where it was 2.8 C on Sunday night and my wife uses me as her personal hot water bottle - shoving her feet/hands at me when I come to bed... :shock:

I'm lucky that I have a tour guide - my wife is English (spent 16 years there in 3 separate stints) and it's her favourite city to visit. I loved Czechoslovakia as a schoolboy (now that was some time ago, I'm up for my 20 year reunion this year), I did some projects on it and I was proud that I learnt how to spell it....but I've never been there.

Have jotted down the things to do in my notebook for further discussion with my wife. As there won't be Hahn Premium over there, I love trying new beers...I love a good dunkelbier (having spent lots of time in Germany with them!). Kampai, iki, prost....
