Hey all

You have been so forthcoming before with my questions, that I thought I would put another to you. What say you all about Emirates, particularly boeing 777-300er - business and first class?

Many thanks
LeahM

The seating is dependent upon whether it has the new J/F or the old.

I have not used EK for a few years, but did use them a number of times from UK-MEL in First class and was very impressed with the service onboard. The old F only has a old-style F seat which does not recline completely flat which is poor for these days. The new F ( which I have yet to try though planning to try it out next year ) looks v good. Details of the F seating is on Emirates A340-500 . This is the A345 , but the 772 new 3 class layout has the same seats iirc. New F is 86" x 21"

Agree. Old F (eg as on BNE-SIN-DXB) is okay but not stunning. F on A345 is amazing.

J on A345 is so-so. I did a comparison with QF, NZ and SQ somewhere.

EK vs SQ F
EK vs QF vs NZ J (note this was NZ old business[/url]

I've seen a lot of Emirates recently, having flown from Australia to London and back the week before last: so here goes! Decided to try Emirates this time as they had better departure times and routing (ie direct to Glasgow from Dubai) than the other carriers.

Sydney-Dubai: A340-500 in First: Very comfortable suite, as good as F in QF or BA. Liked the extra privacy that the sliding doors give you. Best entertainment system I've ever seen, lots of movies and music on demand, even some quite obscure classical programmes. Good service. Power point for laptop.

Dubai-Glasgow: Boeing B777-300 in Business: There is no First on this route, but it meant not having to change at Heathrow. Can't remember much about it but nothing bad.

Gatwick-Dubai, Airbus A300-200 in First: Seats in 2-2-2 configuration, so had to climb over neighbour to get to aisle. No laptop power.

Dubai-Singapore-Brisbane, Boeing 777-300 in First: Seat configuation as above. No laptop power.

Definitely not as comfortable as the A345. The seats were comparable to business class on other carriers and didn't lie flat. Service was variable: OK from Gatwick, excellent Dubai to Singapore, then there was a change of crew and it became very patchy (breakfast not cleared away for ages, forgot to hand out menus, had to ask them to take my jacket - it looked like they were short a couple of stewards). Little things, I know but my company was paying the premium for First!

The lounges in Sydney and Gatwick were excellent, plenty of nibbles and booze and not at all crowded. The First lounge in Dubai was something else; I couldn't even find a place to sit down. They are building furiously at the airport and this will probably be fixed in due course.

In summary - worth paying for First if you are on the A340-500, otherwise stick with QF or BA.

Some of the 777s to/from Australia also have the suite now ; if a 777, then check whether the flight has suites and not just discount 777s

I recently flew Business from SYD to AKL on a 777ER - they have the new business and first class seats - suite seats for first, and way more room in business. There is a new entertainment system which is basically on demand

On the return - AKL to BNE I was on an older 777 (non ER) which had the old first and business - they have significantly less room, plus movies etc is the older style you get what we want to show you style of programming.

Service on both planes was very good.

from my brief investigation it appears that the 777's will be upgraded over the next year or two, but all 777ER's are already done. Leaving from Oz, MEL, PER, and BNE all get the 777's only, but SYD get the 777ER's.

So....if you are looking to travel business of first in Emirates it is to your benefit to leave from SYD.

That last information is not correct.
MEL-SIN-DXB is 777 but the direct MEL-DXB EX407 flight is 340-500 plane.

No need to go through Sydney at all.

I am flying EK407 tonight ex MEL and I booked online and the plane layout for my seat is a 340-500. As it is coming from AKL, then yes it is a 340-500.

So trans-tasman AKL-MEL & AKL-SYD both have the new product? ^

They do indeed. Picking the 20/11 for example from EF, the 77W on EK419 AKL-SYD has 2 rows of F rather than the old 3, whilst EK433 AKL-BNE is showing 3 rows of F on a 773. EK407 AKL-MEL is operated with a 345 which has the new seats

I've flown the A345 before (see post #3 above ;) ), and the old 777 but not the new 777
