Really interesting to see CASA do this, as it has been said before. Never happened in the history of Australian Aviation.

Good on CASA I say, Tiger have obviously had a string of problems, and they are sending them a clear message, that they really need to up their game if they want to continue to operate in Australia.

Of course, is Tiger putting their guests up in hotels? No.

Good on Jetstar for coming in and saving everybody at a reasonable price. That shows good corporate culture.

What role has Singapore Airlines played in the sub-optiminal management of the airline, one muses?

I'm wondering the extent of the rub off on Singapore Airlines (even if it's found their involvement is limited).

It's kind of a big angle that the no news / media haven't grabbed yet the fact that a 'first rate' airline has such a large share if Tiger.... If this was happening to Jetstar Asia or Jetstar Pacific the media would crucify QF of course ;)

Couple this with Singapore's less than ideal response to their A380 RR problems they certainly have lost a bit of gloss recently.

Singapore Airlines is relaly only involved as having a quite substantial shareholding, and not much with the day to day. However, One would expect that in the background they may be taking steps to protect their investment!

Then that could also be said for QF and JQ then.

Actually there is a bit more than money and ownership here - Singapore just keep it very quiet - and now we see for good reason.

I think the spotlight should be quite rightly be put on them as well, even at the very basic major shareholder level they should be across the fact they partially own an unsafe airline and its not like this is a SUPRISE, CASA have been slapping Tiger about for months / years now!

The relationships are different.Singapore Airlines are an investor in Tiger. Jetstar is part of a two brand strategy within the Qantas group.

Hehe. I guess Qantas can't help out, given their own problems next week:shock:

QANTAS SUPPORT FOR STRANDED TIGER CUSTOMERS

Today's grounding of Tiger Airways by our safety regulator CASA shows the need for a rigorous and unwavering commitment to the highest standards of safety across the aviation industry.

It is also a stark reminder of the vital role aviation plays in Australia and the impact that airlines can have on the travelling public.

This grounding, and the subsequent delays and cancellations, couldn't have come at a worse time for thousands of Australians. For many families heading-off on holidays this time should be the highlight of their year.

The Qantas Group will do all we can to assist. Both Qantas and Jetstar will be putting in place rescue fares for stranded Tiger customers over the next week and we will mount additional services where possible. This will help many Australians looking to travel during the school holidays.

Notwithstanding, there will be a lot of Australians who will have their travel plans severely disrupted and we should do our best to be supportive and accommodating.

We are also asking our Licensed Engineers union, the ALAEA, to suspend the industrial action planned for next week. If the ALAEA proceeds with union action, this will not only compound the situation but it will also irrevocably damage the reputation of our airline and our engineers in the eyes of the public.

Instead, we all need to put our focus and resources into allocating additional services and assisting stranded Tiger passengers.

This is just the latest of a series of challenges we have faced. Times like this bring out the strength, energy and compassion of the Qantas community and our spirit of caring for Australians when they need us most.

This is certainly a huge story this Tiger grounding!!.... ABC are running it every 15 minutes and are stating that both QF and JQ are adding more flights where possible.

No mention of poor old Virgin even though they have posted something online too as above.

The QF delays next week are expected to be minimal anyway.

From my sources.... Sent to all QF employees!

Fair enough - I could find Virgin and Jetstar statements, but QF seemed a bit quiet!

Tiger Australia Fleet Grounded

Jul 1, 2011

Australian aviation regulators have temporarily grounded Tiger Airways Australia due to safety concerns.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) issued the suspension with immediate effect from July 2, and it will extend at least until July 9. Beyond that date CASA must ask for court approval to continue the suspension. “If the Federal Court supports CASA’s application the court can continue the suspension for a period of time which will allow CASA to finalize investigations into the safety matters,” the regulator says in a statement.

Highlighting the serious nature of the concerns, CASA says it is taking these measures because “permitting the airline to continue to fly poses a serious and imminent risk to air safety.”

CASA says the suspension came when Tiger did not satisfactorily solve safety issues raised in a “show cause” notice in March. After the notice was issued, CASA imposed conditions on Tiger’s air operator’s certificate.
