If all goes to plan I'll be departing on a DONE4 ex-JNB in May this year (first flight BA codeshare with Comair). Other flights are booked on QF, RJ, CX, AA, AY.

1. How do I calculate my baggage allowance?
2. Will it vary by carrier or does it go on (a) the allowance of the first carrier (BA) or (b) the most generous allowance?
3. If it's the most generous allowance, is this QF?
4. Does my OWE status count for anything here?

The BA website says "If you purchase one ticket for your entire journey (a through ticket) you will receive the most generous allowance available.
For example if you are travelling to a destination which involves British Airways and another airline (on a through ticket), we will respect the baggage policy of the other airline and the most generous allowance will apply." I'm assuming, though, that connecting means, for example, LHR-SIN-SYD, not a whole round the world flight spread over several weeks.

The xONEx rules are specific - the "Piece" system is to be employed.

This normally means two pieces.

I suggest you read the thread you originally posted your question to again closely (xONEx Baggage Allowances); some baggage weight limits have changed but it generally holds up.

Review the operating airlines' current policies and go from there.

FWIW, I shudder at the though of check luggage in the first place, let alone 2 x 32Kg

You are entitled to 2 Pieces as per the ticket rules

The maximum weight of that piece is dependant upon the airline you are travelling on

There is no additional allowance for OW status

Some carriers will allow 32 Kg per piece, others 23Kg

If you want to ensure that you are not hit for excess fees, then keep to 2x23Kg and you will be fine

An exception is that BA will allow 3 pieces, however since you cannot do the whole journey on BA, I wouldn't suggest taing 3 unless you are just dropping some stuff off en-route after the BA flights

Thanks, Dave. I was particularly interested in the maximum weight per bag so 23kgs seems like the way to go. Apparently there is an entitlement to one extra piece on the QF flights only which may very well come in handy with my last two sectors on QF.

The oneworld website indicates that baggage allowances are as per each airline flown. Check out the baggage allowances for each airline by looking at the conditions of carraige page at:

I am currently travelling on a RTW J class ticket with one world and notice that our LAN flight between Lima and Cuzco does not offer a business class service...Am I still permitted under the piece baggage system 2 pieces at 23kg ?...LAN states that for economy flights within Peru 2 pieces are allowed with the TOTAL weight being 23 kg...Am I correct in stating that I am allowed 2 pieces at 23 kg ?...Thanks for any advice:)

The allowance on the OWE is 2 Pieces. The airline can limit the maximum weight of the pieces so they could limit it to 23Kg max. I would suggest confirming with Lan what their policy is

Thanks Dave...But if I am in business class and no business class is offered can I still use the business class baggage allowance ?

Problem Dave is I have just flown in from Madrid where I used my 2 x 23kg allowance and am travelling straight on to Cuzco and I am trying to eliminate a situation on checkin if possible...Thanks again:)

Yes they allowed it last year for us on our DONE.As happens on american eagle, qantaslink etc.

The 2 piece rule applies right across all xONEx fares i.e. economy thru to first-class, so you will be fine.

There can be a distinction in weight allowance per piece, based on class of service, though.

On a related topic in relation to the BA allowance. I have a BA flight connecting to a QF flight (LHR-SIN-SYD) should I assume that the BA allowance will apply (no stopover).

Just wanted to update everyone as to what happened at checkin...The LAN checkin lady insisted we were overweight and dismissed the emerald one world standing plus the business class RTW ticket..I read her the rules and finally a supervisor intervened and approved our free luggage allowance..So I guess the moral of the story is to be insistant and remind them of the appropriate rules !!!...Thanks again for your advice:)

The supervisor may have approved it in this case, but the agent was correct; you were travelling with LA and their allowance ( you mentioned ) is 2 Pieces which is what you are permitted on a OWE ticket. There is no specific weight agreement with the ticket and if an airline has a 2PC allowance but limits to 23Kg max, then they that is within the terms

One World Emerald has no standing as far as luggage allowances go; OW does not offer additional luggage allowance as a benefit

BA will apply their allowance through to SYD as long as it is a connection on a single ticket

Actually, the agent was incorrect!

While LAN allow a maximum of two pieces, 23 kilograms in total for flights between cities in Peru, an exemption exists with the most generous allowance applying when either connecting or with an intermediate stop of more than 24 hours and the route corresponds to a single purchase:

Since pyffii was travelling on a DONEx they would be entitled at least 2 x 23Kg and possibly 3 x 23Kg with LAN's Business class allowance.

BA will apply most generous weight allowance available between the difference carriers' connecting flights but the number of bags must not exceed the allowance for the class of travel for the British Airways flight(s).

However the free checked baggage weight allowances does become confusing with simongr's issue.

Assuming J travel, BA allow 3 checked bags up to 23Kg each. Qantas allow 30 Kg + 15 Kg WP allowance with no restriction on the number of pieces with a maximum weight for any one piece of 32Kg.

So maxumum number of pieces will still be three. Will the maximum free weight for any one piece be 23Kg (BA) or 32Kg (QF)? Will the total free weight be 45kg (QF) or 69Kg (BA)?

Common sense would indicate the latter in both cases so we would have a hybrid of a maximum 3 pieces with no piece being heavier than 32Kg to a maximum total weight of 69Kg.

However the free checked baggage weight allowances does become confusing with simongr's issue.

Assuming J travel, BA allow 3 checked bags up to 23Kg each. Qantas allow 40 Kg + 15 Kg WP allowance with no restriction on the number of pieces with a maximum weight for any one piece of 32Kg.

So maxumum number of pieces will still be three. Will the maximum free weight for any one piece be 23Kg (BA) or 32Kg (QF)? Will the total free weight be 55kg (QF) or 69Kg (BA)?

The extra 15 Kg allowance applies ONLY if travelling on a flight that is both marketed by and operated by QF so is irrelevent to BA travel

QF buisness allowance is 30Kg on a LHR-SYD journey whilst BA will allow 3 x 23 Kg ticketed with 3 x 32Kg in practice , so not much of a decision on which is higher

30 Kg Max vs 69 / 96 Kg

Even with a 15Kg allowance being allowed, 45 Kg is still less than 69 / 96Kg

If was on a QF journey where the PC allowance applies, 2PC is less than 3PC, so the BA 3PC would take precedence.

It is possible that BA at check-in may take the connecting segment airline's allowance into account in relation to being more generous.

British Airways - Checked baggage

In any case, as you point out the BA allowance may give a higher free weight anyway, it is moot.
