Yep, Finnair and British. Is it allowed to use more than 2 non-Qantas? Our current route also uses AA in North America and can also use Cathay Pacific to get to Osaka. (So Qantas + 4 others)

See post 2 of this thread for the rules ... how far is it and how many stopovers. Note that 'ground/surface' segements count for total distance and each is considered a stopover.

Yeah I'd checked that, total distance including land segments is around 46000 km, so within the limits. So the issue then is the number of airports?

It looks like you have under calculated the number of miles in your trip.

There are no oneworld flights from SIN-KIX, KIX-FCO & YVR-SYD. You must be going via other cities which adds miles to the trip which means you could be over the limit.

I went back and included HKG, HEL and DFW as the intermediates for those flights, all up comes to 48906 km, as our actual flights would be syd-sin-hkg-kix-hel-fco-lhr-jfk-yyc-yvr-dfw-syd which still is under the 56k limit.

So it doesn't seem to be because of the distance. What else might be making it cost more points than the expected 140k each?

Thanks for the help so far :)

Just redid the test booking online and noticed something interesting.
Interesting as flying syd-sin-hkg-kix-hel-fco-lhr-jfk-dfw-yyc-yvr-lax-syd is 47k km's, but costs 226k points each, however changing the final leg to be YVR-DFW-SYD makes the trip longer overall at 50k km's, and drops it down to only 140k points each.

Looks like the following will work for us.

Not sure why changing the final flight to be via DFW rather than LAX makes such a big difference? Qantas for both of them.

I am glad it has worked out for you (what airline was the Vancouver to LAX?)...only one suggestion try and change flight 4 so you don't have BA or UK departure tax. If you can go out of Paris it would probably drop your taxes/surcharge

Was your Vancouver - LAX leg on Alaska Airlines? That would explain it. Not a oneworld airline. That's all that is showing up for me in the classic award booking tool right now.

Apologies if it is mentioned in the thread. Had a question regarding land sectors and how they are calculated especially where there is no one world direct flight. I.e how would a Rome-Athens land sector be calculated?

Also are land sectors counted as additional stops? Much like dangers question above if I was to fly into Rome and then take my next flight from Athens would this be counted as one stop or two?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any hints on how far in advance I should seek to book a trip? Looking at two J tickets [SYD-LHR, LHR-BCN, MAD-ORY,CDG-HKG, HKG-NRT, NRT-SYD] in October 2014. You can only book ~ 340 days out online, but is there greater future availability on the phone? I'm QF Gold I can see a few seats in August 2014, but it's very limited. My dates aren't particularly flexible so I want to get in early.

Let's say I call on October 10th: How do I book to depart Oct 8 but, because it's too far in advance, I can't book the rest of the flights?

Airport change is considered the same city on QF, alas not for AA!

Try gcmap, QF will calculated themselves but you'll be pretty close.

You may wish to consider differing routing, like SYD-xHKG-LHR or NRT, SIN (not just the direct via DXB), KUL and DOH are other options!

I believe upthread you'll find people booking QF awards then adding more sectors later and it reprices as a alliance award. This way you can book the QF flights for 192k or similar then later add the remaining flights and it will max at the 280k, at least that's how I've read it - not something I've done myself. You will be up for the change fee but it's worth it.

I hear bookings are heavy for mid 2014 due the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the World Cup in Brazil. I suggest you book as early as you can and try to be flexible with dates and route.

I'm looking at MEL-EWR (Cathay pacific, via HKG), JFK-BCN (via Madrid, on Iberia), land sector back to LHR-MEL (Emirates, via DBX). I've calculated the miles, including the land sector, at just under 28,000 miles. Any suggestions for what I'm doing wrong?

Emirates aren't a OneWorld member - that's probably your issue. Try to find a BA or Qantas service from LHR-MEL
