"oneworld" award (132.4K/249.6K/318K/455K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

...
Not sure about EWR/JFK - does it count as two different cities - New Jersey/New York?
Generally EWR and JFK (and LGA) are part of the greater NYC 'co-terminal'. Like LON for LHR/LGW/STN, TOK for HND/NRT and CHI for ORD/MDW.

Once flew <us>-LHR,LGW-<europe> and was not charged APD.

Can someone help me with a luggage question - We have a J OWE Award flight coming up in June..the AA flights are in economy because of the 2 class scanario and I am a little confused regarding our allowance for luggage..my itinerary shows the following

AA3457 - Nothing listed under checked baggage - Washington Nashville

AA2831 - Included - 3 pieces Nashville to LAX ( via Chicago)

AA1155 - Included

I dont have any idea whether that means I get the full allowance travelling on AA - I wont need 3 pieces but would like to know what the rule is

Thanks. Was your London "connection" part of a OW award or a revenue fare?

Going back to Cardinal's post had me mixed up about the "surface segment in the same city" rule, I was thinking of the revenue explorer xONEx fare. Whoops. It doesn't matter how many segments you have, as long as you stick to the 5 stops and 35k miles it doesn't matter.

Distance and stops (this thread) vs continents and segments (xONEx) vs distance only (AA OW award)....

Even without status I would think that you'd be entitled to the J allowance, even when you're forced down to Y.

That said, as you're OWE, you're entitled to at lest two pieces (probably three) at 23kgs each.

Since your travel involves routing via the USA I am thinking the US DOT exception to IATA 302 comes into play and the allowance for the first journey should be the allowance for the entire trip.

It is interesting that your e-ticket is showing different allowances.

Anyhoo, as Danger pointed out by being oneworld Emerald, you and anyone else on the same PNR are entitled to two free checked bags each (at least). [American Airlines Checked Baggage Charge Exceptions | AA.com]

Thanks all for the advice, I am hoping I dont have that much luggage anyway until we have some outlets in LA and LV

Just a quick other question if you dont mind do you think there is much chance of an paid upgrade to First on these AA flights, not sure that it is worth it on the Washington to Nashville, but the onward flights to LAX are longer

The seating has been allocated if it stays in place and looks OK anyway

Washing to Nashville - 4B and 4C
Nashville to Chicago - 5C and 5B
Chicago to LAX - 7A and 7B

LONE4 - scheduled arrival @LHR 10am one day and scheduled departure from LGW 10am the next day.

I will have to remember that one... with the diminishing value of the ZAR I am contemplating a xONEx ex-JNB or CPT in the next 6-12 months... (before they increase the fare)...

You'd have to balance that against losing a usable segment by using co-Terminals.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I was of the opinion otherwise - doing as such would not count as a surface segment (I note your HND/NRT above, do you mind sharing your carriers?).

Not sure about EWR/JFK - does it count as two different cities - New Jersey/New York?

My carriers are QF, QF, MH, MH, JL, CX, CX, AB, AB QR, QR & QF.

So flying from Shanghai to Haneda with JL. The Malaysian Airlines & JAL flight options were not available through the Qantas search engine so I endes up nooking over the phone. Airberlin kept taking my seats away from me because they felt the booking process qaa taking too long.

The reason I say that segmenta were an issue is because I thought everything was fine i.e. I had my itinerary. However, my tickets were not issued. After a few days I contacted Qantas who after much consternation, determined I needed to lose my last leg back to CBR. Definitely statwd it was segment & not mile related.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi everyone,

So up until last week, I didn't really understand that all the constraints of booking a J oneworld were basically the same as any other Qantas award flight. I thought with all the Oneworld fleet to call on that these flights were far easier to find

Mrs Nick and myself are intending to try and book one of these awards starting in March 2015 returning back to Australia in June. Our high level agenda is (in my opinion) pretty straightforward in that we want to get from continent to continent but are reasonably flexible about exactly when and where we would land and depart from.

We do want to go to SYD - Sth Africa - Europe - USA (east coast) - Sth America (my son will be living in Bogota at the time) back to SYD. We don't really see any need for additional flights internal flights in both Europe and US, we just want to fly in and fly out and are not really looking to maximise segments/miles etc

Can I and should I book segments as they come up. From playing around now, it looks fairly simple to book SYD - JHB - LHR basically 11 months out but that means the USA/Sth America flights don't come online for another month because of the later travel dates. Waiting until the last flight becomes available compromises my ability to get in particular the SYD - JHB J flight

Can I do this? I'm happy to pay any point fee required in amending the booking which I assume would need to be done over the phone rather than online

Thanks in advance for any advise you can offer

Yes you can do it this way however each time you change your itinerary it will cost you 3500 points per person.

Is there a cash option ?
3500 points or $80 ? Something like that ?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Thanks Vec and yes I do understand the charge however think it is a small price to pay to get the flights we want

Is booking the flights a day apart also an option and then changing the dates as suitable flights come up? Accept that this would also incur the fee

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I did all my flights to kick in the 140k points....so going to Europe step/Oct and currently have USA booked for November....however we are going to USA in June/July 2015 so when dates become available I will do the change

Yep sure, at least then you have something locked in (and in the class you want). As it seems you are quite aware flexibility is the key to making these 280k awards work in your favor.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Guys I know QR opens up a year in advance but what about MH ?
My parents are doing a 280k run starting in April and hopefully running until early March 2015 with QF, MH and QR and we wanted to make a change but not sure if MH is open yet.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

How do you see MH.

When I do my little test runs, they are never an option?

Do you have to go via the phone?
