"oneworld" award (132.4K/249.6K/318K/455K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Another query.

I am looking at JNB to PER leg for my 128000 pts trip. Only direct flight is South African Airway with QF code. Does this work as a One World flight or do I have to use Qantas by flying JNB - SYD - PER?

No, SAA is not a OW airline
Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - Points Tables
oneworld[SUP]®[/SUP] Classic Award table (worldwide) excluding taxes, fees and carrier charges
The oneworld[SUP]®[/SUP] Award Classic Award table is based on return flights, unlike the Qantas Award table.
The oneworld Award Classic Award table only applies when your Award Itinerary includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline. Qantas flights operated by Jetstar Airlines (JQ, 3K, VF or GK) cannot be included in oneworld Awards.

You're not locked into QF from JNB to PER. You could go via DOH on QR or HKG on CX.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I am planning a One World trip for 2015, intending to book at an early date, since looking at a fairly involved trip covering Japan, Canada, Europe and Africa.

Another query.

You could consider changing your itinerary to Japan - Africa - Europe - Canada and going NRT-DOH-JNB-LHR or NRT-HKG-JNB-LHR if that fits with your plans?

Thanks guys, looks like I have plenty of options. Via DOH appears the best.

I'm thinking of doing a 280k J award in July/August. Is it too late in the piece to even contemplate booking one of these?

Some routes are popular.

FWIW I booked both my economy Oneworld awards in March/April for travel in August/September.

Things have changed since then though.

Y awards mostly have stacks of availability year round (with a few exceptions) however J awards are more difficult to obtain, which is what Isochronous was asking about.

I'm also looking at a 280K OW Award for 2015 but playing around with the Qantas site compared to a dummy booking on the Oneworld site delivers vastly different options

I picked a really simple itinery - SYD - JHB - LHR - JFK - SCL - SYD

Qantas Multi City offered me SYD to JHB on QF in J, JHB to LHR on BA in Y, LHR to JFK on BA in J, JFK to SCL on AA in Y and SCL to SYD on QF in J

Whereas One World offered me a lot more options and all in J.

My question is that when it comes time to actually book, do I need to do it over the phone as the QF website makes it impossible to find the right flights

OneWorld site brings up inventory in revenue buckets. What you see on Qantas site is the classic award inventory and that's what you got. Ringing Qantas won't help

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I find ringing does help as the QF site doesn't seem to have everything. From memory, it doesn't show as much CX and MH inventory as actually exist.

YMMV

Well thats a bit disappointing, I always thought the one world awards were much easier to get because there was a lot more availability across the whole alliance.

OneWorld is smaller hence there's less availability. Also, SCL to SYD is near impossible to find in J - it had to be a QF flight that is only 3 times a week, you can't book onto LAN flights (daily)

I don't know that that's true.

It may not show up on QFF online but if the seat is available in an award fare bucket it should be bookable by calling the call centre. I've seen the SYD-AKL leg of SYD-SCL on LAN bookable as a classic award.

I'm pretty sure that's true. It's in fine print in t&c

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

It's on the QF number, but it is a LAN flight.

LAN to SCL.JPG

IME, there is more availability than what is showing on the QF website. That's why I recommend using other sources to search (such as BA or AwardTravelr) or just phoning and asking the QF agents to find availability between the city pairs you're after.

The QF website seems to have a bias towards the partners it likes (AA, EK etc) and tends not to show availability on *O partners that it doesn't (BA, CX etc). My understanding of OneWorld rules is that if an award seat is available, it has to be made available across the whole alliance. That doesn't mean every website will show it, but the agent should be able to book it using their GDS.

Last time I tried to find availability, there were CX seats that seemed to be only available to AM members?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

CX and BA seats show on Qantas website all the time. You can't see JAL or MH at all, you have to ring for these seats
Apologies about the LAN bit earlier, it's that you can't book flights between Sydney/Auckland and Santiago under a LAN code, it has to be a QF code. Still, OneWorld award seats between Sydney and Santiago are very hard to get in J (more than 1)

Yes they are difficult but I managed to get two in J in 2010 by being flexible with my dates and yes it had to be on the QF number, even where the metal is LAN. Do you have a relative who is WP? If so, they can request the seats be made available (you would need to transfer points to them, etc).

Also, look at Expertflyer; much easier to check availability than on QF site.

A quick thank you for all the assistance that posters will never really know they provided me. My partner & I are in the QP prior to heading rtw in J less 560,000 points.

Only a little blue in that I didn't realise flying into and out of different airports in the same city counted as 2 segments even if it was one of your 5 stops. Still can't complain as I got all the cities I desired.

I was of the opinion otherwise - doing as such would not count as a surface segment (I note your HND/NRT above, do you mind sharing your carriers?).

Not sure about EWR/JFK - does it count as two different cities - New Jersey/New York?
