Hi, I am currently in Australia and looking into oneworld explorer fares for a big trip coming up. Would it be better for me to purchase the fare from KL, eliminating a continent in Aus. Currently I can get real cheap flights from melbourne to KL on airasia.
I am wanting to include Nth America, Sth America, Europe and Asia in the trip.

if this is a better option - what would be the best way to do this? contact AA or another airline in KL??

thx

Welcome to AFF jimmy :D

Currently LONE3's ex Malaysia have a base cost of MYR10,780 (~AUS3550). LONE4's are MYR12,555 (~AUD4,140).

Compare this with LONE4's ex OZ (AUD3,699) and ex NZ (NZD4,099 {~AUD3,300})

Assuming you are looking economy (LONE), as serfty has shown not much benefit.
If you are flying Business or First (DONE/AONE), then the benefits of the strategy become more substantive.

Not sure of the cost advantage of booking out of KL, but for getting to KL from MEL, there have been some fairly good prices from both Emirates and Malaysia lately (580 return).

thanks guys.

yes am looking at economy. was just thinking perhaps it might be cheaper to book from somewhere in asia.....what about thailand or indonesia?
at this stage looks just as easy to start from home.

anyone have any other suggestions for travel options - am looking to try and be fairly flexible but am on a budget still. need to include nth and sth americas, europe, and central/se asia....

thx

The oneworld website has all the information you need. You can get estimated (ie not including taxes) pricing from different countries there. Not sure about in economy, but in business class Indonesia/ Philippines/Vietnam are cheaper than Thailand, in turn cheaper than Malaysia, in turn cheaper than SIngapore/Hongkong. Bearing in mind the current dip in the AUD will be working against you.

Another option may be ex-NZ which has a LONE4 for approx $3050 AUD, or a LONE5 (which is probably what you will need) for $3300 AUD - a whole $1K AUD cheaper than ex-Australia. Pay for a cheap oneway to AKL to pick this up, and your $$$ ahead.

Just a quick question - if I read this correctly it is cheaper for me to book a J Oneworld explorer out of the Indonesia/Phillipines?Vietnam cheaper than anywhere else? All I have to do is then get a connection to one of these countries to start the journey?

Airfares from some destinations and exchange rates change regularly. You need to have a look at the Oneworld site to find out the current cheapest starting points.
