On retiring, what new things did you start...

It's not so much getting the wrong things, but that they morph into something else on the way home.

Frinstance mineral water morphs into tonic water and dry ginger ale becomes diet ginger ale etc.
And soft feta becomes standard feta in spite of underlining soft - I hadn’t realised how talented groceries were :)

Why?
Since when has less been more?

On a similar tack, I've seen people selling houses to downsize for retirement, because it is too hard to do the vacuuming and the gardening......

I couldn’t agree more. Why declutter and/or downsize? I love all my stuff and my hobbies, and having lots of people to stay.

I want a bigger house in retirement. A big Cellar, Fruit trees & Art Studio are all in the plans. I’ve given Mr ALH my wish list.

I don’t particularly like looking at property so he just needs to narrow it down to a couple of places that fit the bill and let me choose :p

Our plan is to live in France, so short trips throughout Europe, having the kids, grandchildren & friends to visit will keep us very busy.

I’ll continue making my own bread, preserves & cheese, probably on a bigger scale.

I’m an avid reader, and plan to create the perfect quiet reading nook wherever we end up.

Mr ALH is interested in philately and genealogy.

We’re also getting electric push bikes for riding around the countryside on nice sunny days, shopping at farmers markets. Lunches and wine. That’s pretty much it.

walk, buses, taxis, Uber. I haven’t had a licence for 25 years, but am still independent. Although Mr FM is good about taking me around - he tends to drop me off at say the dentist, doctor etc and I make my own way home. I figure the amount it costs to run a car, I can take an Uber whenever I want to and I am still way ahead. It does help that he does all the market and grocery shopping - I just hand over shopping lists and yell at him when he brings the wrong things home :).

I do ALL of the grocery shopping, and ALL of the cooking. in fact mrs GPH went to Coles a wee while ago to do some grocery shopping, I received a distressed phone call from her, she was lost and didn’t know which aisle to use to find what she wanted.

Here is my ultimate bees knees off road caravan.

Bushtracker :: Real caravans for the outback

Once tow vehicle added on it will be quarter mil
But 250k depreciated over 10 years will net maybe 30k per year (plus interest earned) which A good OS trip in J for 2 once a year

Yes they are great vans. But I am not sure that I can justify the cost. The range of vans is huge now and so it is difficult to know where to draw the line ;) It will not be at the cheap end that is for sure, but will not be at the highest end either most likely.

With the vehicle I will keep things simple. Possibly say a DMax 4x4 Crew Cab. (Mind you this is probably the most competitive vehicle sector in Australia just now and so which vehicle I will get will depend on what deals are going at the time). I do not want or need all the bells and whistles.
  • Versatile and suits my other hobbies
  • Great engine for towing and 4WD-ing. Cheapest in this caregory to maintain (even cheaper as first 3 years is free with the current deal)
  • If I drown it on a creek crossing (ie the last time I crossed the Copper Creek the water was over the bonnet of my troop carrier), it is not the end of the world, whereas with more expensive options you may be reluctant to "play" with them.
  • Probably get the no carpet version so that will not have to worry about mud or dust as much.

Yes Mr FM used to do all cooking as well and then I bought a Thermomix and my passion for cooking was reborn. :). I don’t even know how to use self checkout, let alone where things are. He does Farmers Markets on a Saturday morning while I snuggle in bed. He claims he has to be there no later than 8am to get the best things, but I reckon he just likes to talk to all the stall holders. He always seems to come home with extra things that people give him to try :)

Why declutter .

Decluttering is to me getting rid of things that you no longer need or use.

On this basis, decluttering provides more space for things that you want to use, makes it easier to find things etc.

It may even create some extra funds that can be used on other things.

This continuing thread makes great reading, well done all.
So many differing "systems" that all work for the participants.
I would be lucky to boil water successfully ,and I am quite dependent on (and spoiled by) my better half for my daily bread.

One of life's little disappointments was #1 son's transition from Basel to San Francisco.
I had all this inventive conceptualisation of a few years in Suisse, entertaining my grandson and walking and skiiing….….sigh
I don't go to 'frisco unless I have to…..

..... which can be the subject of de clutter phase two (lol)

I intend to get LTG prior to retirement.

So after retirement it will be BFOD. No dodgy DSC deals and mileage runs

Q: should retirement be postponed until LTG achieved?

my feeling is absolutely not! Retirement is more important! Having said that Mr FM and I both reached LTG but we did it after retirement. It is handy, as so many domestic flights out of Canberra are all economy and so it is good for lounge access, but I wouldn’t have put off retirement to get it.

Lounges are good, but at the end of the day you can get a cup of coffee or a snack or even a glass of wine outside the lounges and their premises are sometimes cleaner. We’ve all been in domestic Qantas lounges where the carpets are covered in crumbs and dishes piled up. :).

If you plan to continue flying one world you will get to LTG, but don’t put off retirement for something that Qantas might ditch - no guarantees.

We still only fly Qantas domestically, but internationally it is whatever works and we have totally given up on the status/points game - just too annoying :).

I was being a bit tongue in cheek. Lifeline, Red Cross, Save the Children & Every Little Bit Helps etc. do quite well out of me on a regular basis, so I’m actually decluttering. I don’t have patience for selling anything so I donate it all to charities.

Soon I’ll say goodbye to my skiing and motorcycle clothes. :( Sadly it looks like those days are over, when only 6 months ago I was looking forward to more riding and skiing in retirement.

Definitely don’t wait on retirement. However, I will be LTG this month and P1 for the next 19 months by sheer luck, so perfect way to slide into retirement.

......she was lost and didn’t know which aisle to use to find what she wanted.

......but she can calmly navigate Moreton Bay on dusk, in cyclonic winds with broken instruments and hulls full of water! A far more valuable skill. :p

Good to see someone who thinks like I do (and my wife does).

The only reason to declutter, is if all one's space is filled up - and one needs more room for buying things taht one will enjoy more.

Renato

we have a 600m2 house (including 100 m2 for the indoor pool). It is ridiculous for 2 people - not to mention costs a fortune to maintain. I would rather spend that money on travel. We don’t do anything ourselves - I.e. have a gardener, cleaner and pay for maintenance, so it isn’t any effort, but I look at the money going out and it just seems a waste. It wasn’t when the kids were at home and we had some amazing parties! 100 people for Ms FMs 16th, 18th and 21st (she was always the party animal, although Master FM had some big LAN parties) - heaps of fun and after parties for formals.

The house seems to be full of things that are either junk or haven’t been used in years.

We have set some targets - once I have decluttered and the fur babies die, we will downsize and that will feel about right.

The fur babies are not yet 8, so hopefully a long while to go and as I would generally rather read a book than sort out cupboards, that isn’t going too fast either :).

I also find the older I get, the less interested I am in buying things - more interested in experiences :)

We are actually getting rid of a lot of stuff that we havn’t used in years. Eg. Camping Gear and Fish Tanks are going very soon.

Our fur babies have all gone and won’t be replaced.

Absolutely could not agree with you more on this. Except for Champagne. Always buy Champagne

We live in a small 400m2 house, with another 300m2 under cover around the house.
It feels tight to us because we were each used to living in our own houses before we hooked up.

The thing is - after three months overseas, we now get very homesick for our place.

I don't think we'd feel that way if we downsized further.

Don't you feel attached to your home in any similar way? Especially with the memories?

Renato
