I like the interactive route maps of One World, Star alliance and individual airlines in planning business and leisure trips. I'm not particularly loyal to any one scheme these days so am usually looking for the best route rather than any particular carrier.

Is anyone aware of a map based web site, like the ones linked to in the first line that combines alliances and airlines, so that on one page I can click on, say, Elko, NV or Sibiu, Romania and see which airlines fly into and out of those ports?

STA Travel has something for RTW, but nothing effective I have seen. I usually pick my destination, go to the Wikipedia article, and work backwards based on airlines and destinations.

Resurrecting an old thread to recommend Rome2Rio.com
It's not map based but, besides airlines, it includes train and bus connections - even ferries - with a good amount of detail, journey times etc. The team are based in Melbourne, but I found that even local buses to a fairly remote location in Wales were included, with a link to the full timetable. You can search any route without entering dates, but dates would be needed to get accurate pricing for flights. I'm not sure how I discovered it - it might even have been here, but I couldn't find any mention via a search. Not sure how they make their money, but I did notice a link to booking.com for hotels, so perhaps it's just by referrals.

That's pretty whizzy - thanks! Just asked it for Hobart to Nairobi and up it came, including the surface legs eg from Hobart city to Hobart airport and multiple air routes.
