Hi

Just booked SYD-JNB rtn for August and noticed that the return flight seating map has the old F seat configuration. I would have thought these were all gone by now?

I am not complaining though as was lucky enough to get one 2 years ago to NRT and they are very comfortable.

Friends flew QF21 a few days ago, were lucky enough to land a points upgrade to J, and were able to select 2K and 3K (old F) seats.
They were stoked, said it was awesome

I have old F selected for QF 21 and QF 26 later in the year. hopefully, the equipment does not change.

Nope, Qantas only 12 747's left, only 9 have the new 3 class config. OEB and OJM remain in the old 4 class (old F) and OJI remains as old 3 class.

I think my QF128 flight on Thursday 5th has been allocated OJI (which I am less than happy about). Looking at the seat layout, I think I would rather a PE bulkhead seat.
Those Mk1 skybeds are VERY average now.

You are in luck. The cabin is a bit tired, but it has to be one of the lightest most spacious cabins in the sky. What's more, there can often be a great atmosphere as the cabin is so open -in contrast to the fashion for first class suites nowadays. I would take this over a newer business class seat any day. Tough luck though if you don't manage to snag the front cabin, the Mark1 seats are well past their sell by date.

How can you find out which plane you are actually on?

We have selected seats 3a and 4a on QF63 to JNB on March 21 when it was showing up as the old 4 class. The seat map now indicates that it is a 3 class plane being used however how do you find out which one?

Edit - Well I logged into all the different configs so half answered my question - my flight is on a 56 J seats so must be OJI (this being the only one left with that config pending the retirement of OJA) however this still doesn't answer my question as to which Qantas bird has been allocated for a particular flight

Are you replying to the OP or the poster above? If the poster above, he has indicated that the a/c he is on is OJI which is the only remaining Skybed MKI 3 class left.

JNB route is 90% chance of the old 4 class

I flew last year in 1A

Very nice, quiet and comfortable for the 14 hour flight

I flew QF21 SYD-NRT a few days ago in 2E (the old First). Had originally been locked in for 16A but Qantas booted me. I had row 16 locked in for 10 months, checked it every month and it seems three days before the flight they booted me to row 25. Anyway, this is not a complaint of course - as they reallocated me at check-in to 2E and it was fantastic, though as others have said - a bit dated. Only complaint was the coffee was bad, but the service from the crew was very, very good.

Any idea how long the 4 class birds will be flying? Got a SYD-SCL next year showing as 4 class and have happily claimed 1A/K.

Bit of an update. Old F stuck for QF21 but QF26, being the inaugural flight, was subbed for a refurbed 3 class, which made sense as it had Skybed Mk II but was a tad disappointing for Mrs_O and I.

I think QF are planning to keep these a little longer than initially planned. Those last 2 747s with old F could well remain in the fleet until the first 787s arrive. That doesn't mean the configuration is guaranteed to stick, but there is some hope. :)

We have old first class for flights to JNB later in November and returning in January. Let's hope they hold. Indeed the flight over was only recently changed from J configuration in the nose to the current first. I currently have us in 3E/F both ways. For the return leg there is no other option in the first cabin but for the flight over 1A and 2A are available (and also 2E/F). I thought of 1A and 2A for the chance of seeing some Antarctic ice but I seem to recall from the only other time I travelled in the front cabin you needed to be a contortionist to get into the overhead locker in 2A because of the overhang. Anybody have any recommendations? I know, it is a first world problem. :)

I loved 1A (very private) and indeed got great view of Antarctic

On QF63 I'd definitely choose an "A" seat - those Antarctic views are excellent (assuming you fly far enough south/the weather is good).

Have just extended our stay by two days and have now jagged a 4 class for the return, have claimed 1A/K for both legs .... hope they both stick!

My upgrade just came through for QF127 later in the week and I can select 4A, 4F or 4K in the old first cabin - any recommendations on these 3 seats?

4A or K are the pick. You have the bassinet next to you which yields loads of extra storage space.
