Just checked in for a trip. Noticed that on the BP there is a security number, with 3 and 4 the numbers printed on two passenger BP's. What do these numbers mean?

Also is it possible that after check in online it may be possible to be upgraded to a higher class behind the scene, or are any upgrades only left to those last minute check-in's done at the airport?

If it's the "SEQ" number, that'd be sequence, ie. the order of checkin.

Sorry, I wonder if it's the same thing though (didnt realise it was Malaysian Airlines BP - QF and many others use "sequence number").

Sequence and security number are the same thing, it's the order you have checked-in for your flight..

No worries, just wondering whether I should wear my good underwear just in case of an upcoming strippy (or similar)?

Ok thanks. My numbers are 3 and 4, but there are only 2 pax? Shouldn't it be 1 and 2 for my BP's?

Also any idea on the upgrading q?

Thanks for the help so far!

You are the 3rd and 4th passengers to check-in.

I cant speak specifically for MH, but upgrades (non-paid or non-points) are rare anyway, OLCI wont drastically alter those odds.

So you are the 3rd and 4th person to checkin for that flight, not that the flight is empty.
For upgrades, it won't matter if you are already checked-in, the BP will beep at the gate if you get upgraded... Where you flying to/from, what carrier? (Malaysian i assume?)

Yes, MEL to KUL. I have a class B BP (if that helps), I purchased a "MHsmart" fare

Would not have a clue, only know and aware of Qantas products, but would highly doubt you'd get an upgrade free of charge, i'd probably put a house on it.

I'll ask a supplentary question! Why is the number so important to airlines?

I seem to recall reading something a while back indicating that the sequence number is used to quickly locate your checked baggage if you fail to board.

ie: baggage is grouped by sequence number

Not sure how true that is, or how that works in today's world of "priority baggage" :)

I thought it had to do with manual boarding (if the systems go down). Find a bingo card, and start marking off the SEQ number of passengers when they board.

The sequence(/security) number becomes a PAX's unique identifier for a flight.

Change seat, get upgraded, get new BP, whatever - you will keep the original number.

It help's with systems i.e. with a Seq number of 4, then "10/11/18 MH0148 004" could identify you specifically.

serfty,

A question in that vein then. For the trip we are now on. (MEL-SYD QF, SYD-HNL JQ.)

When we checked in in MEL at the QF transfer desk we were given QF boarding passes for the JQ leg. (seq 4 & 5).

When we went to board in SYD they went into a small flap at the QF boarding passes and gave us new JQ boarding passes (seq 283 & 284)

How does that fit in with what you were saying and what happens to the original numbers :?:

Were you given JQ BP's for an ex SYD flight at MEL?

I did not think that was possible as JQi have isolated reservation process - i.e. depart SYD, only i SYD could BPs' be generated.

Given your information at seems that perhaps the BP's issued at MEL were 'phantom'. I hope you did not lose your pre-allocated seat....

Logically however if they were 'Phantom' then maybe that didnt disturb the orginal details?
