I'm needing to get to Wellington in mid-Feb and it seems the most convenient and cheapest flights are operated by JetConnect. Can someone confirm that there is no status or airmile earn on these flights?

Otherwise, how do I get to Wellington from Canberra in a reasonably short time?

If it is a QF flight, you will get status credits and points.

Jetconnect is QF so full SC and point earning.

There's some sales on at the moment. Use the QF NZ web site for your one-way return to save significant $$$.

e.g For 10th Feb

Use Oz QF site for One Way CBR-WLG AUD375 on the one PNR or better, CBR-SYD for AUD116 and SYD-WLG for AUD239 (Separate bookings).

For the return use QF NZ web site for one Way CBR-WLG NZD377 on the one PNR or make two bookings: WLG-SYD NZD224 and SYD-CBR for AUD116.

As pointed out already QF=Jetconnect and the Jetconnect crews are QF NZ based, IMHO Jetconnect are the best crews in the QF Group fleet - perhaps level with the Australian Airlines crew that staff QF now.

I've had outstanding and consistant service flying Jetconnect, both internationally and domestically within NZ - and even though they use 737's which are my least preffered aircraft, I would rank the total experience amongst the best flights I've taken!

I actually nominated several Jetconnect crew for QF's people awards and was notified that one actually won which was great to hear back on!

Thanks to all for the reassurance. I'd never heard of JetConnect until a few hours ago and when I couldn't find them listed as partners etc., I assumed that I wouldn't get anything.

Can't say as I'm pleased at crossing the Tasman in a 737. Guess I've been spoilt by longhauls with seatback entertainment. But good crews can make a huge difference to a flight.

Yes they can, when you check in at Canberra try for an exit row, or ask poltely about the load on the trans tasman flight and see if they can block off the middle seat for you. If Canberra can't/won't try again in Sydney.

I have always managed one or the other. Then grab about 4 pillows and blankets (the Jetconnect aircraft are always loaded with enough to mount a Red cross rescue mission) and make yourself comfortable!

(The only other alternatives are Air NZ who usually fly their horrible ex Freedom Air A320's - no room to breath and cranky FA's and sometimes Virgin who have pretty much given up on Wellington and can't be relied upon)

Well if you can manage to upgrade to Business, you will have your own DVD player and choice of DVDs. If you can snag row 4, you at least get the DVD player and the movie everyone else is seeing, but you never know.;)

Is there an actual Jetconnect web site ?

When I enter www.jetconnect.co.nz in a browser I just get redirected to the QF NZ site when using Firefox, and QF Aus with IE7.

Richard.

It redirects to www.qantas.com.au, and from there your regional settings must be different between browsers to get to the different pages. I would guess if you just browse to www.qantas.com.au you would end up at the NZ or AUS sites as you have described.

Hmmm. Not happening now - just getting Aus site from both.

Anyway the real point was, is there anywhere to actually find out about Jetconnect ? The Qantas search facility dosnt provide much.

No separate website. Google may be your best option.

What do you need to find out? From pax perspective it is as if they are QF mainline.

Looking at photographs on airliners.net, the planes look like Oz QF apart from the NZ registrations. I had imagined that they were some offshoot like Freedom Air or JetStar, taking up the routes that Qantas didn't care too much about.

What is it with Qantas anyway? Why do they fragment themselves into so many corporate faces such as CityFlyer and QantasLink?

At least CityFlyer and QantasLink have defined purposes that I can find info about on the Qantas site (eg Flying with Us - Business Traveller - CityFlyer and www.qantas.com.au/info/about/company/qantasLink). Australian Airlines had a website of its own (now it just redirects to the main Qantas site also).

What is the point of creating a separate branding if it dosnt seem to be marketed in anyway ? Or do I miss out on Jetconnect TV and press ads because they dont fly to ADL ?

Probably nothing until my next trans tasman trip - at least I can always get any info I need here :)

I believe the 100% subsiduary Jetconnect was set up to use NZ based staff, as the cost of the staff is cheaper and flights like to Wellington end their each day and the staff go home. No accommodation costs. There are exceptions.

JetConnect is just an operating entity that Qantas created in order to base crews in NZ and take advantage of lower costs (i.e. lower salaries and other conditions maintained by QF mainline due to many years of unionisation).

The aircraft are the same Boeing 737-300 and 737-400 aircraft that used to operate QF domestic services - originally purchased by the old Australian Airlines before merging with Qantas. They have just been re-registered with NZ regos as they are operated by NZ-based JetConnect.

Now that the second Australian Airlines (with the Orange 767's) has stopped operating its own AO flights, Qantas will continue to use Australian Airlines as an operating entity for some international services in a similar manner to the way they use JetConnect and for the same reasons - lower costs due to different staff conditions. But again they are Qantas aircraft, Qantas flight numbers, Qantas marketed and branded flights.

Both JetConnect and Australian Airlines operated Qantas flights are Qantas flights for all intents and purposes, including FF earning for all Qantas and partner airline FF programs. They are OneWorld flights and qualify for all OneWorld benefits and fares such as OneWorld Explorer.

Think of it this way ... for any Qantas flight, Qantas can source the aircraft and crew from one of three operating entities:
  • Qantas Mainline
  • Australian Airlines (currently 767 international services)
  • JetConnect (currently 737 NZ Domestic and Trans-Tasman services)
I believe they are maintaining Impulse Airlines as another operating entity, initially for the remaining 717 aircraft. But who knows just how they will use Impulse, Australian Airlines and JetConnect in the future.

When Jetstar was first started, Impulse was the entity that operated and managed Jetstar. Is that not still the case?

I don't know for sure, but my understanding is that Impulse has followed the 717 aircraft, hence the Jetstar link before the delivery of the A320 aircraft for Jetstar.

The Jetstar website shows "© 2006 Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd ABN:33 069 720 243".

Both the Qantas and Jetstar sites say...
Jetstar’s Australian operation is wholly owned by Qantas but is managed separately and operates independently. Our Australian headquarters are in Melbourne. Jetstar’s intra Asian operation is a Singapore-based partnership between Qantas (49%), local businessmen Tony Chew (22%) and FF Wong (10%) and Temasek Holdings (19%) with the hub based in Singapore.
An ASIC search on the Jetstar ABN shows its former names as
IMPULSE AIRLINES PTY LIMITED
IMPULSE REGIONAL AIRLINES PTY LIMITED
IMPULSE AIRLINES PTY LIMITED
CALLMOON PTY. LIMITED
So I guess the answer is yes.
