How can a traveller have an R value ?
Totally bizarre fear of vaccinated covid negative travellers. I don’t understand why the NZ authorities aren’t getting a roasting for this in the international press?

NZ Herald

NZ using same health advice/science source as WA, SA, TAS, QLD….?

Or maybe it’s a volcanic rock that they throw in a lake, if it sinks - decision A, floats - decision B.

My money is on Ardern letting up on these announcements (both through moving dates forward and dropping the 7 day home iso). Their MO has been to announce something ultra conservative using the "it's the safest way to do it...we don't want to end up like Europe" justification, then as things eventuate and the sky doesn't fall down, they relax the rules and change it to "the work we've done on vaccinations has been amazing...the health system is under control...we've led the way" and really play to everyone to show how amazing they are. Politics 101!

Hi, my mother lives in NZ, I live in Oz (Oz passport) - she thinks she will be able to fly over here (Melb) in late January to see us, is that correct? As the travel bubble is no more and Aussies can’t fly to NZ until May, can Kiwis still come to Oz and return to NZ before then? This is all very confusing!

Australia's border is open to anyone who's been in NZ in the last 14 days, this includes Kiwi's (although they must have spent the last 14 days in AU/NZ).

Obviously specific states like VIC don't require quarantine which means she can come over when ever.

From January Kiwi's can also travel from AU to NZ but they'll have to complete 7 days of home quarantine.

The border being open to anyone in NZ is left over from the bubble which means technically anyone in NZ can come to Australia for any reason and provided NZ will let them back in they can go back.

I expect the NZ Govt will retreat on this
What they have stated will kill the summer tourist industry. Its in a bad way now. That will not get votes.
(Many of the tourist workers were young people:- backpackers, foreign student on visas, holders of working holiday visa)
With AU open will be a lot of one way NZ to AU air tickets sold if Cindy continues on that path. Tourists will head for AU in preference to NZ.
Australia is still not a choice for overseas Tourists as Oz appears to be closed to Tourists until at least the end of April 2022.

The difference being that all four states listed above up until this week basically had zero covid whereas NZ has similar rates to NSW, and if you just count AKL has higher rates per capita than NSW.

This makes their decision making all the more stupid.

Unsurprisingly YHA have announced a dozen properties throughout NZ are closing permanently.

Email today from Qantas cancelling our Auckland-Melbourne-Adelaide flight that was booked for mid January. Air NZ had already cancelled our late December Adelaide-Auckland flight.
I feel your pain - our mid-Feb trip to AKL not looking at all promising 🙁😔😭

OK; I’ve read the update at the NZ COVID site a few times and am still confused (!!)
Does the “phased border re-opening” now planned for end of Feb 22 mean Australian travellers will be allowed into NZ in March with no quarantine restriction? Or that they won’t require to be in an MIQ facility but still required to self-isolate? If it’s the former I am keen to book a trip for end of March… Thanks

If all else remains the same as when they first announced the re-opening plan, NZ citizens from AU as well as the rest of the world would be able to enter without MIQ, but would still require 7 days home isolation.

Thanks for that. And grrrrrr! Would love to take advantage of the Qantas biz sale but can't see how anyone would buy flights to go into iso!

But only NZ citizens/immediate family/PR's. No AU or other country citizens.
April for others a big maybe. New Zealand to stay closed to visitors until April 2022
24 Nov -->Reconnecting New Zealand – the next steps But 16 Jan date pushed back to end of Feb
21 Dec --> Omicron: Government’s plan to minimise risk

NZ domestic community cases are reducing (from ~200 to 17 today), but geographic spread is getting wider and cases crossing the border increasing. On 23/12/2021 NZ Govt increased MIQ from 7 days + 3 days home iso to 10 days in MIQ. Given increased cases crossing the border, my money would be on MIQ going back to 14 days.
Omicron has scared the NZ govt & bureaucrats. They will react more.

NZ just cancelled the next release of MIQ rooms. Lots of angry kiwis, who if they can't get back in before the next election will also lose their right to vote against the very government keeping them locked out.

NZ have just cancelled their cricket tour to Australia for this month as Cindy won’t let them back in if they travel to Australia

How is this acceptable? New Zealand citizens are now literally banned from returning to their own country (rather than just in effect). Surely there will be a legal challenge.
