Not happy about qantas mag today

This advertisement has been in the Qantas mag for well over a year. Can’t call yourself a frequent flyer if you’re only just discovering it now. <snip>

Is that so? I've never discovered the ad, so I guess that puts me right out of frequent flyer contention. ;)

Personally I'm surprised that anyone here has nothing better to entertain themselves on an airplane that the advertising rags that airlines put in the seat pockets. And as for remembering an ad that was run 3 years ago ... I'm impressed!

I think there are far more offensive/inappropriate things on the IFE (given they can also be viewed by children, either on their own screen if not child locked, or surrounding pax screens), than dating advertisements with fully clothed people in them, whether they be MF, MM or FF type advertisements!

I was once sat in 4C and looked to my right to see the passenger in 4D watching an episode of Game of Thrones (I believe) with full frontal nudity. It was a fairly extended scene. Any child could have seen that playing and it would be 100% more inappropriate than an advertisement in a magazine for an introductions company with two people smiling (and fully dressed) as the image.

First I'd heard about it today.....although I have never considered myself a frequent flyer,

:)

I would have assumed most flyers get bored and end up reading the magazine. Clearly that is not the case. I have a stack of them in my living room so can very easily open any up and find the ad again if I want to, but realise not everyone takes the magazine to continue reading at home. I'll agree, it has become a lot more commercial over the years, though most of the high-end adverts aren't geared at me as I can't afford the products. I do like the restaurant reviews, the concierge recommendations from around the world and the pretty pictures though. Occasionally, I come across advertising as I browse.

I was about to reply with exactly this. I haven't flicked through the QF mag in probably 7 years or so. Being so far behind in so many TV shows my flying time is catch up time.

Never seen it. Shows how often I read the inflight magazine. I might have to start so I can get outraged over nothing too!

I do remember seeing the ad and just continued on reading, can't say it made much of an impression. Certainly nothing to get your knickers in a twist over, imo.

Having now seen the "offending" add, I must clear my position - it is certainly not offensive or smutty or whatever. And as other poster's have stated - there is much more colourful content in the entertainment system.

But in our perfect world of equality and tolerance, we must also acknowledge the reality that gay images will deeply upset members of many religions. I suspect this OP is suffering that...

... or turns out to just be a troll.

Ok it didn't take much googling to find I assume what is the offending advertisement. Make your own judgements. This is from a much earlier edition I understand, note the topic of the opposite story.:pView attachment 101108

I read an article (can't remember where exactly) about this agency. The founders and owners are the 2 guys in the photo. They are also a couple.

Talking about cough on the IFE, I've had a family member peer over my shoulder the exact moment of the popcorn scene on American Pie (the last one?).

I would have thought that would be of more concern than the ad in question...

What's going to happen when they give is HDMI or wireless connections to the IFE so passengers can watch their own material?

In my opinion, the best way to decipher if someone is being a bigot or simply opinionated is to replace the word "gay" with "black" or "Asian". If it would result in a "what an awful racist you are" remark, then it's not ok to say it to gay people.

As an aside, if you're looking for a 'conservative' airline in Australia, you won't get far. Qantas (who own Jetstar) and Virgin (who own Tiger) both support marriage equality and GLBTIQ equality..
Indeed those other airlines do, but they are not brazenly shoving it in everyones face like Qantas is doing and its not just the inflight mags. Qantas is at the forefront of the SSM movement in australia, and for shoving it in our face that is why Joyce got the pie shoved in his face.

One wouldn't exactly say they were at the forefront. Proactively supporting, yes, and along with the majority of the rest of Australian companies and 90% population apart from the Courts, Bernardis, Abetzs and Abbotts.

A lot of shoving going on there.

the ad in question is perfectly acceptable as it looks and appears in the qantas mag - it's an introduction service for long term committed relationships (and seems particularly targeted at wealthy exec types).

coincidentally the founders got a feature article in QBusiness section of the Qantas Mag in 2016:

Here's the version that was appearing back in 2014, it's been running for years.

I wonder if the Op would have taken the time to register for this site (or perhaps even create a new User ID) if the advertisement was for a heterosexual dating service? I doubt it.

Well done Qantas for leading the way forward and it's acceptance of everybody.

They're still together? Well I guess it works! ;)

I have only noticed it today land hence I am commenting on it. If you want to see and read cough then go an buy smutty mags just let's not see it in publicly trading companies that we buy shares in and trust with our welfare

Why don't you buy sufficient shares in the company to have enough voting rights so you can then change policy to discriminate on what advertising money the airline should take. Alternatively, you could announce publicly like a Margaret Court that you you won't fly on Qantas due to your bigoted beliefs?

I am not in Perth. GLBC Gay and Lesbian Community. Having flown qantas for close to 20 years I am yet to see a hetro sexual add.
thanks for voicing your opinion but care very little for what you stated.

in my opinion it's wrong to have that in a mag, you can disagree....

Why don't you take out an advert for heterosexual dating in the inflight magazine if you feel so strongly about it?

Margaret Court called and said all like minded trolls are welcome to live under the bridge in her back garden. Pumpkin scones are made fresh on Wednesdays.

Seriously.... now sure there are conservative and deeply religious people who find any Gay issues or related content, no matter how mild, offensive. That's a given. They are, in our society, entitled to voice and have these opinions no matter what most others may think.

Also in our society, there's the freedom of advertisers to purchase space in media outlets - such as newspapers, magazines and yes, on board on board material on airlines. Just like the seemingly millions of ads for watches in the QF mag and other upmarket brands and items... the advertisers pay and QF puts the content in. It's hardly a political or other statement by the airline management to favour one over the other when it's the advertisers paying for the space I should think.

Why no hetro specific ad? Maybe they bought space in Virgin's mag. Maybe they see the market they are interested to target as elsewhere.. who knows. I seem to recall ads in the past for, what is it Let's do Lunch I think it is? something like that professional dating type things or speed dating, but I don't go out of my way to watch out for that sort of content.

I think, taking the initial post seriously and like minded views, if such an ad is upsetting, than I suspect these people probably go through life upset by a lot of things because really what you walk into a cafe and see 2 people, possibly of the same gender, holding hands or sharing a peck on the cheek? Scandalous!

As to the point of children being "exposed" to this stuff... frankly any kid who would pick up and flick through the mag (when not addicted to an ipad or some other game) would almost certainly flip past that ad as being of almost zero interest - there's no cute animals or smiling suns or trains or pictures of Mickey Mouse to be of interest... and it's amazing how tolerant and inclusive kids are.... I doubt many would care, until their parents decided to influence their world view based on their own beliefs.. and in that case, if a parent was so concerned about "exposure" then they'd be vigilant to only provide "approved" material for their kiddos to enjoy.

re someone watching Game of Thrones or other explicit material in flight.. that's an interesting one because on the one hand we shouldn't be looking at our seatmate's choice of viewing material should we? Kind of if you're going to look and be offended.. well you looked didn't you? However in a confined cabin environment it can be easy to see out of the corner of the eye or whatever... Personally I would not watch stuff like that unless I was in a private seat/suite for that very reason. but that is more courtesy and consideration on my part.

I also recall being on a Singapore train and there was a guy watching GoT on a large tablet standing by a doorway.. that probably broke a rule there somehow :D didn't bother me in the slightest of course.

Anyway my popcorn got cold so think I'm done for now :)
