Today, I posted a new thread in relation a ticket purchase. Due to the nature of this ticket, I was advised that talking about it in a public forum was not a good idea and as such the thread was deleted. Is it possible to have a "members" only forum so we can discus the more fruity (and less public) topics?

I am a little unhappy to hear that has happened.. Obviously it has peaked my interest and I would like to know more.

If this is in relation to something that you have discovered, and is available to the general pulic then you should have been able to post.

However, not knowing the details of your post makes it hard to comment, but I would like to know anything that any other user of this forum knows?

Cheers

The issue is that even with a locked down forum, it's still public - The only difference being that you actually have to sign up with an email address to read the posts versus it being searchable through Google et.al. Even if there were forums for Silver/Gold etc subscribers, there is nothing stopping someone from paying the $ and reading the post.

The only way to do this would be to have members 'vouch' for each other before they are 'admitted' into certain forums. Very elitist, and detracts from the purpose of public forums like this.

I'd also be interested in what you posted, but generally agree with any moderation action taken by any of the mods and/or Admin. They obviously did it for a reason.

I agree that discretion is the better part of valour when it comes to such things. PMs, emails, msn etc may be better means of communication? ;)

I know exactly what the matter relates to. I also know that when the OP had been provided with the information that he had been asked not to divulge this on public fora; he mistakenly thought that this related only to FT rather than all fora and was requested to remove it and so it was removed by a moderator with the OPs approval.

As far as private fora go, I know that it can be done on V-Bulletin but also see that there would be issues determining who should be allowed to access it. I have seen one elsewhere which is specific to on FF Scheme / Airline which is hidden to those ineligable to enter and is available by invitation only from the maintainers (which runs on V-Bulletin). To add one to AFF might be a problem imo

Hmm elitist.... hmm, wouldn't that actually be perfect for a Forum where discussion about elite tier FF memberships are regularly discussed :) (Just kidding)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

I am a member of a number of invite only forums (how else can I search for the best lock picking tools ;)) and basically if you dont have an invite - it is invisible to you . They work well for their purpses - bt they are dependent on the trust you place in other members.

I have not seen invite based sub-forums other than where I am a mod of a forum. You have to be "invited" to be a mod - then you can access the more hidden information (mostly bitcaing about the forum posters and playing silly games like "most ridiculous post ever").

The thing is that there are a smallish number of active posters here and we would need to invite most people who are active so that they could be privvy to the information ... a tricky one to be sure...

I gave AFF and FT a sabbatical yesterday and in doing so probably missed the thread referred to. khe serah serah ... (ap. Doris Day)

My perception in regard to AFF is that having a 'non public forum' may not be in the in line of what admin is trying to achieve.

Technically it can be done, and posted there are several way to do so.

For example, many of the more prolific posters on this forum would know of a couple of FT forum that have access restrictions. One is "Coupon Connection", another "OMNI". Both require a minimum number of posts and a period of membership before having access. Outside of FT, there is also the paid subscription and referral criteria for other fora.

As already posted, PMs are perhaps the best way to deal with such issues; one can send to more than one forum member at a time and thus 'private' issues can be adressed.

Nothing to be unhappy about. I was given a courtesy call. (I know the moderator that did it) and I told him to nuke it. It got me thinking about the information exchange. I assume that 90% of the problem was as this fare is very attractive and most ticketing agents won't/can't sell it, it has become a hot item. so us such google archiving would not be in the best interest of keeping it available. Hence the requirement to log in. Not to hid the information from real people, just robots. Correct me if I am wrong DN.

DN.

ooooooooooh but ime i'd rather try & fail than fail by not trying .... so if i'm assuming it's related to a near impossible but very hot item, spread the word around and let me have a try! hehehehe

I'm confused - probably because I never saw what the original post contained, but isn't an integral part of this community about sharing uneblieveable travel deals? Is this something that would be more suited to FT? I have had the joyous benefit there of other members posting mistake fares, and other FC alerts, that were either difficult to book and/or had the possibilty of not being honoured. I enjoy the thrill of the chase!

So much interest in a deleted post?!?! Guess most like me hate "missing out" - or feeling like we have ;)

The point is that as a public forum people can take the good deals without contributing anything at all - just from a google search. If deals are that good and potentially at risk from being ruined through overuse then perhaps they should be hidden.

That is my thoughts on it also. I have had several PM's about it and I have been happy to respond to all queries. I don't want to hide it I just think that it should be a little less "public".

Edit : Spelling Mistake

I now feel rude because I was off sending a PM when you typed this!

I understand now the 'thinking' behind this. Is it possible to have a CC type restricted forum with minimum contribution requirements? Or is this the PM email list that gets constructed at the Do's in the QP's?? I've finally worked up the courage to attend my first one of these. ;)

I think v8statesman might find out how many lurkers see the forum; thanks for keeping this hush-hush if it's a good fare... and for kindly responding to the PMs you'll get in spades.

Thanks to everyone who is  about this.

Why be embarrassed? I see no need to be.

All PM's (up to 5 mins ago) have been replied to.

Just wanted to add that I would like to thank everybody that contributes here - as I have learnt sooooo much. I don't often post as I feel others here have much more experience to give in responses. ;)

If I do find a sensational deal - should I PM this to one of the mods before posting or just post and let the mod's decide if it should be in the pulic fora or not?

Post away is my motto.
