My German isn’t good enough to identify the third variety of the trio, but it tasted like a Cab Merlot to me and was very good with the steak.

It’s Zweigelt. An Austrian variety rarely seen elsewhere. I’d generally put it on a level with Grenache and Gamay as a light-to-midweight red. Interesting to see it in a blend with Cabernet and Merlot.

Austrian wines are generally not appreciated enough in my eyes.

As an aside- if you ever spend time in Vienna and the weather is decent enough, take an afternoon to climb into the winyards around the city and have some lunch and a few wines at one of the winery places, “Heuriger” they are called. Some are even reachable from the city centre by lightrail and then an easy track up into the winyards.

It’s full of locals and if you speak English, you even get away without being frowned upon as I always do with my “High German” that couldn’t be further from the Austrian dialect But even that is worth it for me- beautiful views over Vienna, great wines and just a nice easy going atmosphere. One of those typical European things that I badly miss here in Australia.
