Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

2005 st Henri .
Not much fruit left . Smooth with a distinct oak, licorice taste
Enjoyed at Henry’s table restaurant in Adelaide. $25 corkageView attachment 176552

Cant quite tell if that bottle or screw cap? Surprised at the lack of fruit though. Wondering if its been poorly stored? Also surprised at the oak given it only see neutral oak. I have one bottle in the cellar. The more I read other notes, sounds like possibly not a great bottle?

Really must go back and look at the drinking windows of my collection and carefully match to my special events coming up in the next few years. Need to remember to buy some Grange in the year of birth of my children.

One day I’ll get around to inviting a select group of AFF’ers around for a layered drinking of my St Henri’s ;)

It was a cork.
I bought it about ten years ago from penfolds cellar door. And it has been in a wine fridge ever since.
Was a little disappointed in it . Definitely one to drink now and not leave it much longer

just out of interest, what does it taste like?it could be a tca bottle, it does strip off the fruit. if you haven't finish the bottle you can email penfold to see what they said, lots of people send them back and if it is tested as tca affected, they will send you a current release for a replacement.

I reckon you're spot on here with it being slight TCA or even perhaps just a poor cork and oxidisation.

I picked up an 05 Clarendon Hills Cab Sauv on a recent Langtons buy now sale and it was corked - email sent. Had a stale wet sock sort of taste.

Now you say that. I remember the cork was slightly pushed in or down if you know what I mean . What that make a difference ?

cork pushed down while you using waiters fd or a ah-so? that only happened to me with bottles in the 90's vintage, some cork are smaller due to their bottle size, i still haven't open any penfolds wine with cork yet, maybe someone else here had the same experience?

Cork has always been slightly pushed down the whole time I’ve had it

Corked pushed in a little doesn't really mean anything definitive. Protruding corks though is usually a sign the bottle has been exposed to high temperatures though.

the cork are not always at the same level as the bottle , thats normal, what i was trying to say is that if the cork slides down while you using whatever opener it is , i will be a little worried.

this is one of the bottles i had few years ago, i send this pic back to the winery and they reply to me it could be both heat damage/bad cork , but this shows how the cork soaked up the wine all the way to the top.
the wine was tasteless and a bad wet bardboard odor.

Oh ok I understand now, unfortunately I didn’t see as the waiter did it away from the table

I know this is a wine thread but has was the meal - haven't tried it since it reopened
Very nice, steak was very tender and cooked perfect. Nice setting and service and corkage.
They have a nice little bar that’s opened as well and they do 2 for 1 coughtails between 5 and 6pm so we took full advantage of that before dinner

An interesting wine in the AA Flagship lounge at DFW just now. Nice spicy overtone with a smooth backbeat. Not hot, considering the ABV. Yummy. Think steak with green peppercorn cream sauce.

Moreish but I’ve got 6.5h in J on the bird DFW-ANC coming up, so reluctant restraint. :p

Surely you jest and meant to type F. Although we all know it's more like J Dom here. I'm sure they'll have a reasonable Napa red for you to inbibe and pass the time. Off to Denali NP?

Well, they may call it F but I’m on a DONE4 so it credits as J. Spending tonight in ANC and over to Nome tomorrow, then flying across the Bering Strait to Anadyr in Russia on Sunday for a two-week voyage to the Arctic.

The red onboard (B787) was a Spanish GSM. Quite reasonable, if a little simple.
