Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

JohnM here. My SIM credit has run out,so using Rooy's phone.

Tonight we knocked off the Saperivi. It was very much like the Cab in character; more like fruit juice than wine.

Tight cork was no problem for the plastic corkscrew and some serious gym work 😉.

RooFlyer here dissenting. I thought the wine tonight not as 'fruity' as last night's. But both something to be improved on.

Or quest for a decent Kyrgyz wine continues, and continues to disappoint. This merlot appears to have skipped the, you know, fermentation step. Tasted like Grape juice.

Will post a pic when internet crawls above 'edge' strength.

Am now at 3,200m mountain pass, with 3G😊

Except for the ever-excellent Stonier, these were/are on clearance at Dan's:

pinot.jpg

The Toolangi and Lethbridge Menage a Noir being particularly good value at $17.78, and perhaps the best value 2018s so far for me, with the $23.78 Abbey 2017 close

trapeze.jpg

The Te Kahu is also a Dan's clearance, whilst the Trapeze was one of my first Vinomofo buys, and the Drumborg is still fresh with years ahead of it, available for $28 on cellardoor.co until tomorrow

Thanks so much to @Buzzard for the 30% off BWS code, which when combined with 25% off any six, 5% off WISH, 3% Cashrewards, made these more than 50% off :) - though of course this Clonakilla was from my cellar, a leftover from dinner at Ryne

kumeu.jpg

Kumeu River vertical - the aged 2010 and 2012 were naturally the standouts, with 2017 being the preferred recent vintage for me over the 2016 and 2018, which I'm happy that I bought earlier this year during a Langton's promotion, though now My Wine Guy are cheaper with a $30 voucher, whilst Prince Wine Store have the 2018 as well

that dexter also produce great pinot year in and out.

Yes, it was finally my first taste of it - I think that his chardonnay is relatively better/value, which I've been a fan of for a while, and has now perhaps become a rare annual buy

I was seriously considering opening a 1991 one of these, but decided I'd left the decision a bit late and would prefer to have it stand up for 24-48 hours prior to opening to settle the sediment.
this one was beautiful. Lovely flavour and smooth

A Wolf Blass black label story :
In the late 70's , I saw a stallion advertised in Adelaide who sounded quite wonderful.
I decided to hook up the float and go have a look ( from bne...as one does)
The horse was magnificent but far too much horse for me ( I was a rank beginner)
After my early morning intro, I had a day to think about it all and wandered up into the barossa ( deep in thought)
I knew -0 about wine but managed to buy a few bottles of this and that including several bottles of black label.
The horse came home with me and became my very best friend.
18 years later he crossed the rainbow bridge and I drank the last Black label to celebrate our life together.

In the Mornington Peninsula region, pinot cost more for some reasons but lots of other pinot in that region are pretty good too.

Feel a bit guilty posting this here, but in the interests of better avoidance of bad wine.

Kyrgyzs red. Possibly the worst wine ever experienced. Like the Merlot posted above, the left hand wine appears to have escaped the fermentation stage and tasted of Cherry juice. Abandoned after a few sips in favour of the right hand bottle which was drinkable, but only just.

Now in Kazakhstan and our fortunes have turned. First a local Almaty Reisling, dry and a bit sweet, but perfectly acceptable.

Then we moved into a local saperavi, again quite nice and went well with the horse steaks JohnM posted in the good thread.

@JohnM may add some more about the wines.
