Depends how aged you like your wines. For me, it was entering the drinking window with secondary characteristics, but plenty of primary still. If you have more than one bottle, I'd say crack one. If only one, wait a few more years. If you're worried about it being past it, you have nothing to worry about. Safely another ten years, with 15 to 20 not out of the question.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I have just one bottle from that vintage so will keep it for now. Some 01s are coming my way, looking forward to test them.

With just one, I'd say drink in the next five years (assuming cork closure like mine was). Mine was also purchased and stored in ideal conditions from the get go. With the 01's, I'd be cracking one straight away to assess. A lesser vintage than 2005.

Was this from Langton's stock, and if so, was it OK?

I think Delectable Blue brought that bottle. Probably the same one he described as disappointing. However, I thought it was fine - just up against tough competition. That said, it’s not a $180 wine, or whatever ridiculous RRP is slapped on it these days.

With lamb shoulder tonight. Picked this up at $30/bottle during a Langtons sale. RRP is $130! A line from The Castle comes to mind. Not a bad wine and at $30-$45 worthwhile. I have two more bottles left and will be interested to see how they age. Certainly not your typical Australian Merlot. Plenty of guts to this. Bright red fruit, milk chocolate. Powdery tannins and decent length. Just seems to be missing some complexity.

Pretty close to how Halliday summed it up in his tasting. Cheers

This blew my mind, harmony, complexity, insane texture, incredibly fruit flavours, so good! New to Barolo and a friend put it on. I'm hooked.;)

I've always wanted to get into Barolo, but Ive always struggled to decide which one to try. I know VinoMofo has some but I'm a little hesitant to get some from there.
I know Winestar and Boccaccio sell a wide variety of them, but I'm just not sure which one's to buy - plus some of the prices scare me off a little.

A good start!

I love the stuff! :D

To try one from Elio Altare and one from Podere Aldo Conterno. These are available from Dans's. They need to be aged for at least 5-10 years and open, decant, taste, then leave for 2 hrs before drinking.

Have a read of Decanter magazine on their Barolo reviews.
Some background
Enjoy!

The recent Giovanni Rossos that VM has are quite good. The Manzone not so much.

It’s worth getting a Wine Front subscription, as Gary Walsh reviews a lot of Barolo/Barberesco. Unfortunately the prices tend to be hard to stomach when just wanting to try things out. Might be worth going to some Piedmont wine tastings.

2002 and I'm really disappointed thus far, I have to assume it's a faulty bottle but will give it some time and more air on the off chance it improves

that's a real shame :(

Was it a Langton's purchase?

Yes, a buy now bottle- not auction

I would assume so, with airation it was drinkable but very disappointing. I will let my broker know, I have 3 more, if the next is also a dud I will explore my options.

I took a 2002 Meshach to a tasting on Friday evening and was also underwhelmed by it. It was also a Langtons buy-now purchase. It looks like the wine might have questionable provenance.

I sent back my original allotment after Langtons left it sitting on courier dock for four 40+ degree days. Goodness knows how the wine was handled whilst in their possession. Not happy...

After my bad bottle I decided to open another to see if it was the same - happy to report it was not.
Really enjoyable, different - but on par with the Rockford BP imo

Might be worth going to some Piedmont wine tastings.

Absolutely! It’s the only way to taste and get your head around Le Langhe (hills) and Barolo (plus some brilliant Conterno Barbara’s), not to mention truffles and the scenery. Fly/train to Torino and drive down, stay in Alba for 4-5 days and visit wineries!

But do homework on the region, soil types, grapes, producers, etc, first.

We should organise an AFF Wine lovers trip! I’ll drive.

as posted in the Dan's thread last week:

Especially for those interested in Piemonte/Piedmont's wines, including Giovanni Rosso's on Vinomofo, Prince Wine Store have Australian David Fletcher's new releases on special, such as X15 Langhe Rosso 2015 for $35, though WineStar is cheaper for Barolo Alta Pete 2013 at $67.99 - their quality/value is considered similar to the D'Anna family's Australian and Italian wines.

Finally got to drink this - was a prize from Langtons.

Drink by according to Halliday was 2015. I am pretty new to wine, but I thought it still had at least 3-5 years in it.

About 10 other people got to try it as well, and a few of them are wine drinkers and they also said 5+ years at least.

Now I know what it means when they say a wine has a 'long' finish. This went on and on.

It was delicious. 9.4/10 from me.

We had a 2013 Xanadu Cab Sav right after it (which is currently my fav go to drink) and it did not compare at all in anyway!
Obviously they are in different leagues to each other, but after drinking them side by side, I can appreciate the differences in a really fine wine and a everyday quaffer.
