Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

2002 and I'm really disappointed thus far, I have to assume it's a faulty bottle but will give it some time and more air on the off chance it improves

I took a 2002 Meshach to a tasting on Friday evening and was also underwhelmed by it. It was also a Langtons buy-now purchase. It looks like the wine might have questionable provenance.

I sent back my original allotment after Langtons left it sitting on courier dock for four 40+ degree days. Goodness knows how the wine was handled whilst in their possession. Not happy...

Steady which Silver Oak was that?
There is an Alexander Valley and a Napa Valley version.
Both seem very heavily wooded to me with the Napa a bit more - not in a bad way, something different

Anyhoo, another couple of reds that have made their way down to Tas via the largesse of one of our compatriots:

On the subject of oak, Kay Bros "The Cuthbert" 2008 was aged in Hungarian and Bulgarian barrels and is a fully developed but not necessarily full-throttle Cab Sav from McLaren Vale, lovely example of this varietal and drinking well now (that's French Tarragon in the shrubbery to those of a horticultural bent amongst us) :)

An absolutely gorgeous WA Shiraz and one that up until now has remained unknown to me, the full-monty, unrestrained, rich dark and deeply complex, it's got that wow factor for me! Thanks to my benefactor....:D

Tonight's wine - beautiful :) a museum release I picked up in June

A few recent wines:

I had these two side by side and snapped them before dumping in the recycling bin. The Vine Vale was very fresh and youthful - loved both.

I was given this '00 Semillon in '01 by one of my supplier's. I didn't drink much wine back then - let alone white.... it has not been stored well, terribly in fact (think heat - Mt Isa, Cairns, Townsville, 15+ years upright etc) I was going to chuck it but decided I would chill and open first just to see, expecting it to be off - it was actually quite stunning! The golden colour almost glowed, I was very lucky.

Last week, had an excellent dinner with wine-loving friends - the following was the line up (theme: Australian wines):

Champers to start (World Champagne day) + ring-in Sparkling
- NV Jacquesson 739
- 2006 Pol Roger vintage brut
- 2008 Lark Hill Methode Champenoise

Whites:
- 2012 Domaine A Lady A Sauvignon Blanc
- 1994 Yarra Yering Dry White No. 1

Pinot
- 1991 Yarra Yering Pinot Noir

Main Reds
- 2003 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2003 Vasse Felix Heytesbury
- 1993 Wynns Michael Shiraz (flawed)
- 2002 Katnook Prodigy Shiraz
- 2009 Torbreck Les Amis
- 1997 Yalumba Octavius
- 2008 Jasper Hill Cornnella
- 2002 Grant Burge Meshach
- 2003 Elderton Command

Desert wine
- 1999 Noble One

I'd say that the 1994 YY Dry White #1 and the 1991 YY Pinot were some of the most intriguing wines of the night. We were all struggling to figure them out. The YY Pinot, in particular, tasted like an aged Coonawarra cabernet. The 1997 Yalumba Octavius, 2002 Katnook Odyssey & Vasse Felix Heytesbury were my pick of the reds.

Two amazing reds!

How's the 08, ready to be consumed? I'm holding to mine unsure if it's time to open or wait longer...

Depends how aged you like your wines. For me, it was entering the drinking window with secondary characteristics, but plenty of primary still. If you have more than one bottle, I'd say crack one. If only one, wait a few more years. If you're worried about it being past it, you have nothing to worry about. Safely another ten years, with 15 to 20 not out of the question.

Not good to hear. When did you buy this one? I had a couple ‘02 about 6 months ago (from auction) and they were amazing. I then picked up some more ‘02 mid year (auction as well) but haven’t tried that batch yet. I also got some ‘01 and ‘05 at the same time that I haven’t tried yet. Wondering if I should tuck into the ‘01’s soon. I’m always a bit apprehensive with auction bottles but I think the Meshach is the same as their retail stock because they were churning a lot of them both retail and auction.
