Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

A real cracker from left field tonight with steak and mushroom sauce. Brought home from Canada a couple of years ago.

Meritage (pronounced like 'Hermitage' - ie. not like meritarge) is a North American idea, that is IMO, a great name for Bordeaux-style wine without copping the ire of the frogs (see: Meritage - Wikipedia for further information).

Edit: 33% Merlot, 32% Cab Franc, 31% Cab Sauv, 2% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot.

Well time to finish off the last of my Virgin Hills case - the 1998 vintage.

I seem to remember that somebody here said I should drink the oldest one first - whomever you are, you were correct.

Opened and the cork tried to split as it came out. There was a modest amount of sediment. The nose straight away told me it's at the "end of life" - a little musty and sharp. Decided to have a long decant and watch the AFL and Union.

Came back after 2 hours and whilst it had settled down a bit, it's nowhere near its later cousins.

I got a mixed pack of Virgin Hills - 2003 / 2005 / 2006 / 2007 / 2010 / 2012

I found the 2012 good, the 2007 decent. The 2003 and 2010 were incredibly hard drinking. The 2005 was a bit better. I still have the 2006 to try. I would not buy these again.

At a recent dinner. The 88 St Henri was the star...

This is my first post with a photo so hope it works correctly!

Awesome bottles there Assassin - now I still have an 88 St Henri still in my cellar, so now I'm looking forward to drinking it - hoping it's also a "wine of the night"

We went a Veuve and a 99 point Vasse Felix red for lunch yesterday. I prefer Moet .....
The red was lovely with the roast pork.

To celebrate my Dad turning 70, I thought I'd crack open this old classic.
I felt that it was pretty much at it's peak if not a little past it's peak. It had a wonderful sweet aroma, however it had lost a lot of the character that I remembered when I opened a previous bottle of this back in 2012. Whilst it wasn't to my Dad's liking (which didn't bother me as it meant more wine for me to drink :) ), it was still enjoyed by those that got to sample it.
