Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Contentious alert!
I think aged wines are over rated. There I've said it. Some of the reds that are made for the long haul i am sure benefit from a few years cellaring, e.g. cabernet, nebbiolo, durif, and whites riesling veltliner and semillon which develop different characters. However most of the ones that people buy at the local bottle shop are ready to drink now and are designed as such. I think there is a misplaced thinking that the older the better but my experience is that many people save that expensive bottle for a.decade (and maybe its the storage) only to be disappointed and wishing they had drunk it earlier.

smells awful, the colour looks fine, light redish , i can see my fingers through the wine, taste kind of sour and bitter finish. i can't taste any fruit though, maybe a little, but over powered by the wet carpet flavour.

Sounds well and truly corked. Wet carpet and a ****ty smell are the giveaway.

Description makes it sound both corked and oxidised.

Did you say this was a Wynns? If that's the case, save both the cork and the wine. Give TWE a call tomorrow morning and tell them its corked. They should offer to send out a postage pack so you can send them the wine for analysis. If corked, they'll replace it with a current vintage wine.

No:) on the contrary. AFF is not reality. Reality is being confronted with a "valued" "precious" wine and having the courage to say, no, despite what it cost or who says what, sorry this is cough and we need to throw it over the balcony and drink something else. It's a BIG step in your wine education journey. :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "a few years", but there's cabenets, nebbiolos, semillons and rieslings that can develop over decades.

True.

I think there is a misplaced thinking that the older the better but my experience is that many people save that expensive bottle for a.decade (and maybe its the storage) only to be disappointed and wishing they had drunk it earlier.

Most people who buy cheap stuff at the local bottle shop aren't expecting to then cellar it.
And the expensive stuff that is worth cellaring generally isn't available in your local bottleshop.

I think you're constructing a strawman here...

No. Don't be put off by cheap wines that have been stored badly or were most likely not ment for cellaring anyway.
Search out some well made, medium priced wines and cellar them as best you can. (Not in the hot water system cupboard or under the bed.) You will be rewarded. A simple case of Penfolds koonunga hill, cellared for a year is wonderful. A case of Bin 28/128/389 for 5-10 years are brilliant. Spend a 1K a year and cellar them if you are serious about wine.

Wine's a journey. Fallo così! You'll love them if you do it well.

yes its wynns, i have email them including the pictures, will see how they reply.

Roger Harbord , dog trainer and maker of a great Coony Merlot. I have a few cases of this one that I think I bought thru winemarket years ago. It's damn good.

Out of interest, how did you aquire your bottles?
As aside, just got a quote today for a funeral service that runs into about thirteen and a half grand. Let me tell you something, my body is going to medical research and possibly my eyeballs might end up with the famous Dr Sammy Lee and it probably will save my family about ten grand. I think I might use this clever bit of accounting to justify my continued purchasing of nice wines to my better half.
In case you were wondering, the quote is not for me. And that's before the lawyers get their hands on the probate directives. Wozza.....got any cheap mates in the game?

+1's BIL is in the funeral business but you'll have to go to Armidale.

AFF is not reality.

It may not be reality for you and many others, but as a member who meets lots of AFFers all over Oz and internationally - Yes, it actually is pretty real to me and many others ;)

I am very happy to accept that afro really did open a corked wine tonight and that he genuinely sought advice on AFF

I met kevviek in swan st Richmond last monday afternoon and did a three bot swap.

or at least I think it was he.

swapped my epsilon tempranillos for some chain of ponds the ledge...and some sweetener, a glenhope 2008 cabernet which is a great wine.

about that proctologist.....I will pass.

what is the name of that cork puller outerer that is favoured by doctors and delectable blue?

Where did it get its name from?

had a acdc shiraz tonight, about a 2011 or 2012. Extremely average, however, thankfully it was not off. Twas a Christmas present about 2-3 years ago.
I guess it was the thought that counted.

Aussie can be a harsh place to cellar, even if you buy ageworthy bottles. If you havent got a cellar then its either drink now or pre aged a la dan murphy cellar release.

Oh yes, I wasn't implying that the bottle wasn't corked. Previous advice to keep it and send back to Wynns is apt.
