Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Am presently back in Calgary which means I have a great selection of wine from across the world (most Canadians having so little regard for their own industry :().

So tonight, to get in shape for my up-coming trip to Georgia and Azerbaijan, I've chosen the wine below.

Fortunately the back label has some English as well as Russian and the cursive, Georgian script.

Its made from Saperavi grapes from the Kakheti region in Georgia, were I'll spend a few days mostly touring wineries :) .

Lovely ruby red colour, but somewhat leathery on the nose (not keen on that). Then lovely and velvety on the palate; merlot like? (Although I'm no fan of merlot.). I'm having it with baked lamb chops so will see how it is after being opened for a while. Going good so far.

Watch for the inevitable Trip Report, starting early October :-|.

Tibilisi, then west to Kutaisi. then retrace back to Tibilisi, then south east to David Gareja monastery caves on the Azerbaijan border; then Sighnaghi– Telavi in the Kakheti region. Too much, too rushed but I'll have a personal guide and driver so will be able to cover quite a bit quite efficiently.

And not stint the wine tasting.

I look forward to reading it! Due to my timeframe I will be looking at the caves and Kakheti also - I have a feeling I will want to return. I'll be in Romania and Moldova for a couple of weeks before (I did read your excellent TR from there) and finish off with two booze free weeks in Iran. My liver will probably thank me for that! :D

I'm embarrassed to observe that the Romanian TR was one where my pics met with a self-inflicted 'accident' (don't ask). I really must go back and repair them; the pics are spectacular.

But one thing you may have missed was this link to a fantastic wine bar in Brasov, Transylvania. Try hard to go there, if you are in the city. Forgive my indulgence, but 'Terroirs' is what I'm raving about (as I've deleted the pics in the other post :()

Next year I'm planning to be in Turkmenistan ... with Iran just over the border from Ashgabat. Very tempted. I'll be looking out for your TR, especially on Iran!!

I did actually see your post on the wine bar in Brasov and will definitely visit! I considered visiting the great man Turkmenbashi with a detour this time around but settled on Georgia but definitely one day. I have enjoyed reading many a TR on AFF so it is about time I gave back. Apologies for getting off topic all, it isn't far from wine o'clock!

Part of our recent buy from Yabby Lake recent releases. Drinking very well now, will be even better in a few years if they last that long.

Just come across this. Been waiting to see this since our second visit to Le Lange last year for my birthday. Highly recommended for those interested in Barolo and Italian wines.

Loverly to see the interviews with Elio Altare and the next generation with Silvia and their love of their mucchi di escremento di polo e mucca for their vineyards!

I'm taking this along to a dinner tonight where the leading wine is going to be a 1991 Moss Wood Cabernet magnum. Expecting some other impressive wines too.
Very interested to hear about the 91 Moss Wood daver6. Have a couple of Moss Wood in my wine fridge

I didn't take any formal notes. However this was a brilliant wine. It was purchased (not by me, a friend) on release and stored in ideal conditions since release. The wine is in great condition and the general consensus was still has room for improvement. Keep in mind though, that this was from a magnum. Wine was still really fresh with a good mixture of primary and secondary characteristics. Good tannin structure and plenty of acid to see this develop further. Thoughts were if you had a similar bottle, hold for another 5 years. The same friend also has a magnum of the 1995 and thoughts were to hang on to that for another 10 years. Having said all that, given cork closure, you really never know.

What years are yours?

Was given this bottle. Never had a Pinot Gris as a dessert wine before, or if I have I don't remember. I'm actually enjoying it pre dinner with some brie. A lovely honey color, nice sweet palate that shows class. Delicious!
