Next Generation Check In

Will be interesting to see how this affects entering the QP.. quite often when I flash my card, they ask to see my boarding pass too. I wonder if it means they'll be more diligent in checking if you do actually have a flight by swiping your card and bringing up the details.......

I've never shown my boarding pass as i usually pick it up in the QP. I just flash my Gold card on the way through

I've only been pulled up once in T2 when i went there first to get a mate in. they kindly printed my boarding pass on the spot for me.

I've deliberately been testing this out lately - never once had them request my BP in either MEL or SYD as either SG or WP (in their respective lounges). Came in very handy when I made a trip to the airport last week for a non-flight related activity though (within my entitlements, of course). ;)

Maybe it's more of a thing for QP and PS cards, though I've been with a QP member who was also able to 'flash and pass' at least once.

I think the trouble one would have to go to go to the airport and convincingly fake a card, with the overhanging threat of random scanning, makes it unlikely that anyone would really bother - at the end of the day, it's not really a pot of gold behind that counter, is it? ;)

Good point.

I thought about this yesterday as l entered the PER QP and SYD J Lounge. I just "flashed" my WP Card. No "in-depth" check. Are there people who have "fake" WP cards and entering the QP's and J Lounges fraudulently? Just get a blank plastic card, color photocopy front and back, clear double sided tape and hey presto, you have unlimited QP entry for about $5. Just like doing a fake ID. It's not rocket science.

Another way is to jockey someone who has an expired WP card.

As long as they don't ask for BP or print you one, you're fine, otherwise you'll be very much done in for identity fraud.

I've flashed mine many times and been waved through, only once being asked for my BP (which I normally print out via the quick check kiosks outside the QP).

It will be interesting to see if it changes given people may not have a BP printed.

Well I've seen the scanners being set up at the entrances to the lounges so you'll probably just swipe again :)

Will report back next week!

Edit: if doing this though.. they'll need to give everyone new cards, including NB. Not all QP members have status. When I rang the QP line and asked about new QP cards, I was told there's no plan to do anything any time soon in regards to them.

I thought those scanners were QR readers for MOCI? Those are the only things that I've ever had scanned there (and sometimes not at all when the dragon sees the status on the screen).

They can also scan the barcode on your FF card I think?

If you check-in on line, is your FF card still your boarding pass? (i.e. no need to print out boarding pass?)

About 10 years ago I gave my wife my FF card. She flashed it as she went into the lounge and was called back. They confiscated the card and posted it back to me with a warning.

Recently, I was dropping my brother off at the airport. I took him to the lounge and flashed my WP card. The lady asked me for ID to prove it was my card. She then noticed the card had expired (I didn't want to replace it with the new cheap looking non embossed cards) so she checked on the system to confirm that I was still plat.

So the system does work sometimes ;)

Mmmm but haven't QF been quietly putting the barcodes on the back of all QFF cars for a while now? Maybe they scan this.

Note the the 330's (along with the 763's and 320's) use containerised (ULD) luggage.

This is automatically 'sorted' in the larger airports using the Barcode number so it's generally a matter of loading the "Priority" ULD's last - these then become first off.

In the SydQP yesterday afternoon and watched at least 4 different 737's arrive and was good to see that on all occasions the half dozen or so Pink Business tagged bags from all the aircraft off first and taken to the baggage carousels on the only quarter full carts. Not sure how this will go when the colour tags are no longer used.

Interesting. I've never once had them seriously look at my Boarding Pass nor FF card (with the exclusion of International of course as they scan everyones BP's there). I hold up BP/Card and they usually just say 'thank you' and wave you in.

Perhaps it's just in quiet times they're more likely to question people.

I'm Plat travelling out of PER this week with Mrs on same booking who's bronze (and doesn't have a shiny new card). Any idea if/how the Q-card would work to check both of us in? (As in what would happen if I waved my card - would it check both of us in?) or is it still the old-fashioned J check-in queue?

My guess is that you will need to use the Premium Service desk / kiosk, but try the machine first.

Worst that can happen is touch - two seconds later - and you get an error message. If you don't get an error message, check with the staff at the QP once you get airside (because I have a gut feeling that you can't board both of you using your card solely as a BP).

When doing seat selection on-line it says:
Qantas said:
If at least one passenger is intending to use their new Frequent Flyer card with an 'intelligent Q' chip to check in at a Q Card Reader you must provide information on Dangerous Goods.

So seems that you may be able to use the one card for both people if on the same PNR?

Maybe they noticed it was an old style card and hence wanted to check you were not using an expired Platinum membership for access.

t's not that clear to me. It only talks about one pax using their Q card. It doesn't saying anything about the other passengers.

It will be interesting to see how this works. As it would pretty much defeat the prupose of "imagine you could just fly", if it didn't check in all pax on the same PNR.

Has anyone got any pics of the system in action, or a trip report on just the airport?

Looks good from the Qantas pics, but would be good to see some 'real' pics, including the new kiosk process/set-up.
