New QF Domestic Routes (MEL-CFS, SYD-HTI)

Its a good question, the Dash 8 economics work on legs longer than 400nm where their 100kt cruise speed advantage comes into play, allowing for greater utilisation of the aircraft in a day. Under that, it's fuel consumption per seat km is much higher as well as having a purchase price at least $7M per body higher. On segments less than 400nm, the break even point on a Dash 8 is almost 2x the seats of an ATR.

Thanks Markis, all good info. Are they intending to use the Q400? (I haven't seen the media release.) Would a 200 or 300 be more suitable, or does the ATR still have the advantage, assuming less bums on seats? I note that when I flew this route the ATR was as full as a State School so the economics may work, but that flight was Easter school holidays and I suspect/know loads would be much lower at other times. I am not sure what will be the main aircraft but the economics don't vary much. ATR says it is 40% more fuel efficient then the q400 on 300NM sectors and 20% overall cheaper to operate, which is close to the BNE PQQ distance.

Thanks again. Overall, good to see competition on this route and the CFS-MEL routes. I hope it works for them (& VA) so that competition keeps prices reasonable or provides better availability/schedules.

Great news & certainly a pleasant surprise with regards to the new routes. MEL > CFS, despite a weekly service hopefully this will be expanded in good time to a more regular service for us folk in MEL keen to explore the mid north coast of NSW.

Let me know when you fly in; perhaps we could organize a regular drinks night!

And at 694 miles a good SC earn with the opening special ($99).

Big News today - Qantas has announced flights from Port to Brisbane...
*Note: Virgin Blue also provides this service.
This is big news to me, just received, esp. as I used to travel from Port Macquarie to Sydney to Nadi, but am I better off travelling from Port Macquarie to Brisbane to Nadi with regards to cost wise. Ty.

Whilst I would have liked OOL to MEL, AFF has taught me why fly direct when you can connect.

The lack of a service between Australia's second and sixth busiest airports still rates as bizarre but remember it was just over a year ago that there was no SYD-OOL service either. Anyway it's been a nice ride for Virgin, they have been pretty lucky that they are up against a main rival whose fortunes are flagging.

Re: QF to offer PQQ-BNE Flights

I noticed today there's also a new route to Miles, QLD, from BNE. Booked myself on the first flight... :)

Yes, the introductory fares are very good indeed & unlikely to repeated in the near future. $6.60 a SC I worked out, which is pretty good going for QF.

So here's the deal Jacques Vert, if you can give me my own private tour, of the world famous " Big Banana" in Coffs Harbour, then ill book a flight up to CFS! :)

So that's a Deal?

For PQQ the BNE-PQQ is a great alternative to the SYD-PQQ flights as it opens up BNE as a landing alternative long haul from USA or Asia. The flight PQQ-BNE leave a little late to catch the BNE-LAX flights, but we can't have everything we want.

Now I don't like to denigrate my home town but I have never understood what people see in the Big Banana; each to his own. As it happens I live almost next door to it.

There are other "attractions" that make it a nice place to live or visit.

I'm doing a bit of FIFO to PNG at present but if I'm in town when you visit I'd be happy to catch up.

I am surprised that QF only added a single flight.... To match VA they would surely want to add 2 flights to keep the line in the sand... ;-)

But DJ and VA have been running this flight on Saturdays for years. What surprises me (well not really) that QF are matching the same day of the week as VA ... and not doing it on , for example, Sundays.
