Its a good question, the Dash 8 economics work on legs longer than 400nm where their 100kt cruise speed advantage comes into play, allowing for greater utilisation of the aircraft in a day. Under that, it's fuel consumption per seat km is much higher as well as having a purchase price at least $7M per body higher. On segments less than 400nm, the break even point on a Dash 8 is almost 2x the seats of an ATR.
Thanks Markis, all good info. Are they intending to use the Q400? (I haven't seen the media release.) Would a 200 or 300 be more suitable, or does the ATR still have the advantage, assuming less bums on seats? I note that when I flew this route the ATR was as full as a State School so the economics may work, but that flight was Easter school holidays and I suspect/know loads would be much lower at other times.
